What's wrong with my Shure SCM810 mixers?!?

I have three Shure SCM810 mixers, #1 linked to #2 linked to #3, and each is about 15 years old. A few weeks ago the mics on #2 began not working until around noon when they would work just fine for the rest of the day. This seemingly random occurrence has now become predictable in that the mixer won't work in the morning but works just fine later in the day. The feed from #1, which passes thru #2, was seemingly unaffected and continued to work regardless. In addition, the mics from #3 will sometimes exhibit problems gating on in the morning, requiring a much louder speaker volume than normal, but this also seems to resolve by later in the day. Any ideas? Is this a hardware failure inside the unit? Is this something else? And why the hell does it only work later in the day?!?

Touch-screen app for sound file playback

Is there an Android app out there that would allow you to touch the screen (either a big icon or the entire screen) that would play back a selected sound file when tapped? The quicker the response time the better. And if it has options for multiple zones (like making a custom-made Simon), even better.

Naughty Star Trek TNG audio

At some point in the mid-to-late 90s, I found an audio file (might even have been a .wav because MP3s weren't huge yet) that I'd like to find again. What's the best, most efficient workflow for making a screencast?

I want to make a series of instructional programming videos. I'm reasonably happy that I have all the moving parts lined up - I know what I want to cover, I have the examples and material ready, I've figured out how to make high-quality video recordings of my desktop and I've got a nice USB microphone. But if there's one thing that my brief forays into video editing have taught me, it's that it can be incredibly time-consuming. Given that I plan on making ~10 hours of content for my first batch of videos, I'd like some advice on doing this efficiently. Specific questions inside. [more inside]

Headphone amp for Sennheiser 555s and mp3s--worthwhile?

I've been thinking about building this little Altoid tin headphone amp kit for listening with my Sennheiser 555s. Granted, the point of building the kit is, well, building the kit--but given the limitations of a (cheap) kit-built design and the fact that I listen exclusively to mp3s on my iPhone or Mac, will there be a perceptible improvement in sound from the cans? Is there more to the sound of my mp3s that I might not be hearing just driving the Sennheisers with the juice from the iPhone's or Mac's headphone jack that would merit stepping up the signal with the little amp?

Can you use VGA for video and HDMI for audio?

A friend is trying to connect her PC (Windows 7) to a projector for video and a receiver for audio. The projector does not support HDMI, so she's using VGA. The receiver does have HDMI, so she's using that for audio. If she doesn't plug in the projector, the audio plays fine. As soon as she connects the VGA, HDMI audio is no longer an option in the Sound settings and audio starts playing through the laptops built in speakers. Looking for Data Center headphones

I work in a data center, and when amongst the racks the noise is pretty tremendous - gotta lean in towards the person you're talking to just to hear them, ear plugs are a must for any long-term work if you don't have other coverage. So I'm looking for good headphones in the 100-150 dollar range that have either active or very effective passive noise cancellation/reduction. The restriction - no earbuds, I hate 'em. Over-ear cans are the way to go. The Sennheiser 280 is a classic standby, but I can't find any specifics on how much white-noise type sound they block. The 429/439s look pretty swank as well, but once again, can't find any details beyond nebulous claims of 'sound isolation'. Anyone in a similar noise environment have recommendations?

Tips for buying a cassette deck, in 2013, in Chicago?

I'm putting together a stereo system that only needs to be able to play cassette tapes and vinyl records, because yes I am that much of a hipster. I have my speakers and turntable, and I just picked up a 1970s receiver with integrated cassette deck...which stopped working almost immediately. Help me understand the difference between 28dB, 38dB and 48dB.

Help me understand the difference between 28dB, 38dB and 48dB. I'm thinking about buying a fridge, and the fridges I'm considering have noise levels ranging from 28dB to 47dB (according to the latest fridge assessment in Choice). Fridges with a 28dB noise level rating are too expensive for me, though, so I'm trying to find something I can afford but which won't annoy me too much (I'm sensitive to the noise of a buzzing fridge). What I can afford tends to be somewhere in the mid-30s dB range. But it's no use going into a noisy showroom and trying to properly gauge how a fridge will sound in my quiet home. So I'm wondering if there's a way I can test these different noise levels at home before I buy, to see what's the difference.

Assuming a level of graphics competence at "low, but very willing to learn", what's the easiest method of creating inserts for audio cassettes? I need the perfect headphones.

I have some Sennheisers. They're nice, but not enough. I want wireless around-ear headphones with active noise cancellation. They should be extremely comfortable. The pair of headphones should have a long battery life, good sound, and an easy-to-use charger station that I can just set the headphones down on at the end of the day. It should be portable in my messenger bag. If it cannot both be good and portable, then it doesn't need to be portable. I have a Mac, which it needs to work with, and a Ubuntu desktop (with Bluetooth) I would like it to work with. I would like to spend anywhere from $100-$500 on this. I'm willing to wait a few months if something new and awesome is coming out, but probably not longer than that.

Save me From Tim McCarver & Joe Buck

My Comcast feed and the MLB.com audio feed are about 30 seconds off. Unfortunately, the Comcast video is running 30 seconds behind the MLB.com audio. When I had DirecTV the audio was always about 1 minute behind, so it was easy to simply pause the TV until the audio caught up, then watch it off the DVR on a 1 minute delay synched to the audio feed. How can I achieve the same result pausing the audio stream via MLB.com? Linux solutions are best as my laptop runs the latest Ubuntu LTS.
