Is there some general music forum where I might ask things like "Suggest me some music that sounds desert-themed" or "What are some good songs with lyrics that aren't about love and dancing?" or "Suggest some songs that include a violin solo." [more inside]
I've often heard people rate different mp3 players with statements like "the iPods have really poor bass" or "the sound from a Sandisk is really tinny" or "metal sounds awesome on my Zune" (a hypothetical - this has never happened). Obviously speakers and earphones and the ripping / recording of the original track can have a difference. Is there audio difference between players beyond that? [more inside]
I have speakers in my living room driven by an amp with one input. I want to plug both the TV and the media centre PC into the amp. What should I buy? [more inside]
I saw a pair of these speakers at a bar and I'd love to know their make and model. Here's a photo: https://imgur.com/pDIO9fJ It may not be that clear, but there's also an array of four horns below the main enclosure.
I just remembered an iPhone app I had that had different audio 'games' that could be downloaded. Very cartoony with weird characters. Often times involving live audio processing via a microphone (At the time I bought a chord that enabled me to input any other instruments/sound devices into 1/8" jack). [more inside]
Can you recommend a sound system to hook up to a TV, our phones, and that also has a radio? [more inside]
I've been using my headphones more lately (an old pair of AKG K-44), and the cups are not quite large enough for my ears. I'd like to buy a nice pair that's comfortable for larger ears and won't pinch/press. These are used for listening to music and playing games on my laptop, but I'm not much of an audiophile so I don't need these to be absolutely "YOU CAN HEAR THE UNIVERSE"-level quality (although I'm curious as to what that might be). Any recommendations for brands or particular models I should try?
I have about 80 cassette recordings of interviews dating from the early 1990s that I need to convert to some kind of digital format. What are my options if my priority is the preservation of the tapes? Is there a "gentle" tape deck on the market? [more inside]
Outdated-tech-filter: need help possibly restoring two micro cassette tapes. It sounds like there's just nothing on them... are they degraded? Demagnetized? Is that even a thing, and can it be fixed? [more inside]
I've been listening to CDs on a crappy thrift store boombox for years now, and would like to buy some equipment to get me to a higher level of audio quality. The complication is that I live in a small apartment with small children, and don't have the space for a standard component stereo system. [more inside]
I'm learning Japanese with a tutor via Skype and recording my calls. At the same time, I'm taking notes on a text editor. It'd be super handy if my written notes had time codes next to them, so I could use them to figure out when in the recording my tutor said a given sentence. Does this exist?
In the late 90s to early 2000s, I found on Napster a techno (possibly trance?) song which had a quote from Carl Sagan's "Contact". It was not a sample from the movie. This dialogue does not appear in the movie. [more inside]
I have a Synology NAS with all my MP3s on it. I also have some older speakers that I would like to put somewhere in my house (e.g., the kitchen) so my wife can listen to music, which she selects via her iPhone. And I would like to do it cheaply, natch. Right now she turns on the TV and uses the Roku's Pandora or I (heart) Radio apps, which take a lot more power than some dinky speakers. [more inside]
My elderly dad would like to listen to bird, owl, and nature sounds that are going on outside of his house from inside the house. Is there an outdoor microphone and indoor receiver (amp? speaker? I'm not quite sure what I am looking for here) system that will do this for him easily? [more inside]
Looking for recommendations for a home ipad/computer driven karaoke set up! Considering all in one packages (Singtrix) vs. home brew. [more inside]
If I want to try to do a fair amount of editing, is it better to record audio tracks or MIDI tracks? [more inside]
At the age of 32, I've finally become an adult with my own apartment. Now I need an adult-sized audio/visual set up. Is it possible to have Chromecast (or other) plugged into a projector, and somehow getting the audio to go to wireless speakers? Also, when the projector is turned off, I'd like to be able to use those wireless speakers with Spotify. How do I set it all up? [more inside]
I want to plug my Zoom H4N audio recorder into the external mic jack on my Sanyo Xacti HD-1000 camera but I don't know what connecting cable to buy [more inside]
I'm looking for books, preferably audio books, about setting boundaries with people and learning when to say no/yes. I want something grounded in psychology, without any religious undertones (although I am open to wisdom from any religion as long as it doesn't get preachy).
I'm looking for podcasts where longform magazine articles are read aloud. [more inside]
This Halloween, I'm going to bake myself a Halloween cake, light some candles, turn the lights off, and listen to recordings of classic horror stories read by masters of the form. Need to beef up the story list! [more inside]
I have been asked to produce audio for a business. The audio will likely be a :30 second commercial for radio, although the client is also interested in me creating audio content for their website. Is there a freelance scale for audio production rates that either includes the costs of pre-production, production and post-production or breaks out individual charges for consulting, idea development, scriptwriting, narration, adding music and/or SFX and editing?
I need to set up a dead-simple method for my 75 year old mom to share individual, home-created audio files (tutoring content) with her foreign language students. [more inside]
I'm going from employed to being a freelancer. So now I need a name for myself. Details under the fold. [more inside]
Yasmine Hamdan performed an hour set on Korsa Live, a television show on the Moroccan network 2M. Is there an audio album release of this performance that can be found? [more inside]
Is there a website where you can paste in something spelled in International Phonetic Alphabet script (usually surrounded by forward slashes) and hear the audio pronunciation? [more inside]
When I use Windows Media Player to bounce around songs in a playlist that basically consists of multiple full-length albums, the volume changes by song because of the audio quality/production of different albums. For example, a song from the '80s will sound fine on one volume setting but a more modern song will sound way too loud at the same volume. Is there a free, or even any such program, that can fix this issue while playing a playlist of different quality songs rather than manually adjusting the volume?
Can I send a spotify stream through my bluetooth speaker but keep other system sounds (e.g. email arrivals) coming through my computer? [more inside]
And I'm on a very tight budget. What do I buy? [more inside]

In the 90's, I had an audio CD which was a demo containing an albums-worth of tracks done by various studio musicians on (what I remember to be) Roland products. Help me find it again! [more inside]
Question posted on behalf of Mr. Killian. My husband is using a MIDI controller (ART X-15 Ultrafoot) to control a multi-effects signal processor (ART SGX2000) for his guitar. But he can't seem to figure out how to make the expression pedal perform an octave sweep. He can get it to turn on/off the effect, but no luck trying to get it to sweep (a la Tom Morello in Killing In The name Of and Like a Stone). Any MIDI masters out there can help?
Why was I hearing random, constant clicks when I ran audio thru my Mackie PROFX8 8-Channel Mixer into my Macbook Pro? The clicks sounded very much like the sound of someone pecking at a typewriter in the distance. The feed left the mixer at the Main Right/Main Left Balanced outputs thru a cable that then combined both channels into a single unbalanced stereo mini. Unorthodox, granted, but I've never encountered that kind of "typing" noise before. Any advice on what was causing it and how to avoid it?
I'm interested in getting some kind of WiFi based speakers for my apartment -- preferably something small and reasonably portable that I can move from room to room (or alternatively, something cheap enough to get a unit/pair of speakers for the kitchen, one for the living room, and one for my bedroom). There are a lot of similar devices on the market now and I'm not sure how to start combing through them. [more inside]
Two part question: I have an M4A audio file that’s about three hours and 90 MB, and would like to split it into three tracks at specific time stamps. What’s the best or simplest way to do this on a Mac without re-encoding? There’s a bunch of stuff that Google returns, but I can’t tell what’s good and what’s not. After that, I’d like to increase the tempo of one file. Any recommendations for tools? Command line or GUI are fine. Thanks.
I have a computer with a headphone jack on the back. Is there a good way to plug in headphones from the front - USB or otherwise? [more inside]
I listen to most of my music on CD, and want to replace the cheapo Philips stereo and speakers from my student days with a better quality system. Recommendations for receiver and speakers please? Total budget around $500. [more inside]
I have a 2003 VW Passat with no aux in jack. I have been using a cassette adapter to get audio from my phone, but the tape deck has stopped working. (It beeps and says Tape error.) I have tried replacing the cassette adapter but the same thing happens, so I know it is the player. [more inside]
I'm working on a fun project which involves multiple bicycles and multiple boomboxes. I am trying to figure out how to synchronize music playback on all of these boomboxes, using phones. I assume this would be streaming from the internet (3G/4G/whatever), but are there streaming services that ensure totally synchronized playback across multiple devices? [more inside]
I have these speakers: link. I have a pc monitor with 2 hdmi and one vga. My ps4/xbox one are connected to the hdmi ports and my pc is vga. The speakers are hooked up directly to the monitor so that sound works for everything. I bought a xonar dg for the sole purpose of getting rid of the hiss from the onboard crap in the pc I have. I was wondering what the best way to hook up the speakers are? The speakers themselves have a headphone output so I just plug my headphones into them rather than on a case by case basis of whatever console I'm using. I just don't want to ruin my headphones in the process. 99% of the time I'm just watching youtube or listening to a podcast while playing a game of fifa so i don't feel like upgrading speakers right now. Headphones are hd 558 if that helps at all. Should i just hook up unused sony studio monitors to the back of pc and call it a day?
I'm helping a friend with an art installation that calls for 4-6 channels of spoken word audio, with speakers spread throughout the room. I could certainly drive this from a computer with an appropriate audio interface, but it would be nice to have a portable setup for the artist so I don't have to be there with a computer running a DAW to drive it. Is there such a thing as a 4-6 channel (output) interface for the iPad? I've seen plenty of 4-in/2-out options, but nothing with more than stereo output.
I want to do something involving motion, audio/video, interactivity, multimedia, and exhibits. What jobs should I be looking for? [more inside]
Suggest a microphone to plug into my iPhone 5S to improve the audio of my iPhone videos? Lavalier preferred, but a little shotgun thingie would be ok too. Hoping to achieve improved voice quality with less roomtone, and I need the audio file to record right onto the video file- I don't want to sync it in post. Thanks!
I have a beloved pair of Koss TD-80s that I now have to admit are ready for retirement - and of course they've been long discontinued. What should I replace them with? [more inside]
I use my computer to play music via iTunes and my computer uses two BOSE companion speakers for output. In order to play music I am faced with a total of 3 volume controls each found separately throughout iTunes, Windows 8, and my Bose speakers. How should I adjust each volume setting to achieve the best sound quality?
I recently went to the "Doctors' Wives" garage sale thing that was happening a couple of weeks ago and bought a nice pair of speakers for $20. They were a steal and although I have to do a minor amount of work on one of them, they're amazing! I hooked then up to my parents' amp and we've been having a great time with them. However, I didn't realize this garage sale was only once a year, and they had a lot of other nice, vintage speakers for $20. I want a pair for my room and a new amp so I can listen to music or the radio in bed. While craigslist has some good speakers and amps sometimes, and the SPCA also has some good stuff, I was curious if there was a store or another thrift store that sells that kind of stuff. Googling only returns Beat Buy and car audio places. Thanks!!
I am envisioning software that is like 2D+time animation-layout software, for placing audio sources onto a flat plane / stage, and editing them over time to slowly move around on that stage, instead of wrestling with the less-intuitive Left-Surround Right-Surround Center-Channel fader levels in ProTools HD/TDM. Does anyone on MetaFilter know of such a software tool? [more inside]
I use an Android phone as my main audio player (both music and podcasts). I'd like to use it to play audio wirelessly over my home theater system. The Bluetooth receiver I got for this isn't cutting it. What's the best way to do this? [more inside]
I need an mp3 player that I can control without being able to see it, using my fingers to feel and press the buttons. I currently have an iPod Shuffle, and I like it. The problem is that I need more storage. I'm looking for recommendations for mp3 players that have physical buttons for volume and skip/repeat, and 8+ GB of storage. Also, I need it to be available to buy new. I don't want to buy anything used. Thank you.
I am looking for a program that synchronizes movement through a timeline to identical times as successively displayed in a spreadsheet. Specifically, I want to play an audio file and as the file plays, I want unique elements in the audio file that I've identified at specific times to be highlighted in the spreadsheet. I want to show very detailed and subtle changes in B as they occur in A. Does anything like that exist or does it have to be built?
