What's the best, most efficient workflow for making a screencast?

I want to make a series of instructional programming videos. I'm reasonably happy that I have all the moving parts lined up - I know what I want to cover, I have the examples and material ready, I've figured out how to make high-quality video recordings of my desktop and I've got a nice USB microphone. But if there's one thing that my brief forays into video editing have taught me, it's that it can be incredibly time-consuming. Given that I plan on making ~10 hours of content for my first batch of videos, I'd like some advice on doing this efficiently. Specific questions inside. [more inside]

Can you use VGA for video and HDMI for audio?

A friend is trying to connect her PC (Windows 7) to a projector for video and a receiver for audio. The projector does not support HDMI, so she's using VGA. The receiver does have HDMI, so she's using that for audio. If she doesn't plug in the projector, the audio plays fine. As soon as she connects the VGA, HDMI audio is no longer an option in the Sound settings and audio starts playing through the laptops built in speakers. Is there a way to have HDMI for audio and VGA for video at the same time? [more inside]

Who has a cheap A/V receiver that has not broke in the last 5 years?

If you have a low-end A/V receiver (less than $400) that has lasted without problems for 5 years or more, tell me the brand name. I won't buy the same model that you bought five years ago, but I may choose the same brand, and go buy the latest equivalent offering manufactured from them. [more inside]

No Audio Required

Please recommend movies that view coherently with the sound off. The example that I offer is 'Cast Away,' which, even during the book-ends of its series of scenes that have dialogue, every last minute point of film's exposition is conveyed through blocking, apparent emotions, and, obviously, action. How to replace mp4 video track with images?

I need to replace the video track of an MP4 with a single image in one case and with a series of transitioning images in another case. In both cases I wish to leave the audio track intact. I have tried Virtual-Dub and Windows Movie Maker (the downloadable version does not allow editing of the video/audio separately). Any suggestions for which software to use. I thought it would be straightforward, it hasn't been.

Recording "screencast" together with webcam video in Ubuntu 12.04?

Using a laptop running Ubuntu Linux 12.04, I want to record three things at once: 1) video of my desktop, 2) video from a USB webcam, 3) audio from a USB microphone. Ideally I would like some setup which simultaneously starts all three recordings, and keeps them in sync, so that it will not be too painfully difficult to mix them later -- my eventual aim is to make a kind of "picture-in-picture" screencast. Is this feasible, and if it is, what's the best approach? (Free is nice, but if I can make this process smoother by paying less than a thousand dollars, I will happily pay.)

Can a broken HDMI connector be fixed?

Fixing an HDMI connector: I broke the connector on one end of an in-wall HDMI cable. Is fixing it possible? This AskMeFi thread proceeded with some of the answers I found on the internet until the poster realized they had a DVI cord. So, I have an HDMI cable, one connector is broken, it runs 35 feet on a convoluted run through the walls and ceiling of an old house, so running new cable will not be as simple as just affixing a string to the old one and pulling it through. Is fixing it possible?

How to show and voice a presentation on a PC?

I am having real trouble recording presentations on my Windows Vista laptop. I have this killer presentation on Open Office Impress and have CamStudio and Audacity. I am wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to make this presentation work. I also have a Flip Mino and a slideshare account but I don't want to put the presentation online as its a course audition and very rough. Suggestions???

Looking for a primer on digital video.

Primer on digital video codecs, containers, etc. While working with video on my Linux PCs, I am often confused because I just don't know much about all the different video formats (MPEG 4, h.264) "containers" (OGG, AVI) the different kinds of compression, how the audio and video stay in sync, what various terms like "muxing" mean, and so forth. I'm looking for a good document that explains all these things to someone with little knowledge of it. A web document, book, Wikipedia article, etc. would be good. I just don't know where to start to see how these things fit together. Thanks.
