My personal music collection is divided between vinyl records (easily played over the stereo, no problems there) and over 70GB of music mp3s on my laptop. I almost never listen to my mp3s anymore because laptop speakers suck and I'm past the point of listening to my music on headphones only; and also because I still haven't figured out a way to wirelessly send/access (either via wifi, bluetooth or cloud storage) the music to my TV or to my amplifier directly. I'm craving music that has as little sound as possible. I feel like the music that I've encountered all my life rarely has long chunks of silence. I want music that respects silence, tiptoes around it, and very, very rarely intrudes upon it. I want those intrusions to be perfect as well. Does anything come to mind? [more inside]
I'm looking for a camcorder or camcorder/microphone setup to record my band's practices and shows for uploading to YouTube. [more inside]
My brother's only means of listening to MP3s is with a DVD player. I've many spare DVD-Rs and would like to put them to use by making him DVD MP3 discs to listen to when we get together. [more inside]
I'm running a Google Hangout-based D&D game and I was thinking that certain scenes might be nicely enhanced with some background music. [more inside]
I'm looking for an audio timestretching tool that allows me to vary the compression/expansion amount over time. In other words, I'd like to be able to draw a tempo "curve" for the input file—say, starting at −8% speed and remaining there for the first minute and twenty seconds; then gradually increasing speed so that it reaches +12% at 5:33; then remaining steady at +12% for the remainder of the track. Help? [more inside]
This is for live sound at a party. I need to add a delay to a set of speakers to synchronize them with the main stacks. I don't have a digital console or an effects box capable of this. Could I use something like Audiomulch to do it? How would I set up my 13" MacBook Air so it won't shut don't or cut the audio for several hours? [more inside]
Longest of long shots but does anybody recall hearing a rap/hiphop song on bandcamp with a Vanilla Ice sample? The beat may have had a bit of the "under pressure" bass line and some hand claps. About 3 times through the song they'd throw the vanilla ice sample in from "Ice Ice Baby" and right when the sample said ".....alright stop" the beat would cut out for a few seconds and then start back up.
When I play records sound only comes out of the right speaker. [more inside]
I used to have an iPhone. You could listen to music with it. You could plug it into my basic USB car stereo and it would play music. I now have a Google Nexus 4. It will play for about 30 minutes, and then stop. If I'm lucky, it might deign to play a few songs in the car. I must be doing something wrong, right? [more inside]
I'm preparing to revamp my digital music library, including re-encoding a lot of high-bitrate OGG tracks as MP3 to increase portability and cut down on file size. What are the best LAME encoder settings to maximize appreciable quality for the future without taking up too much space? [more inside]
I want to take my friend on a tour of a recording studio in the NYC area to take a friend on for his birthday. Google has come up surprisingly short. I'd prefer a recording studio that has come kind of historical importance, though I know that most of the legendary studios in NYC have moved or closed. If a historically significant studio isn't a possibility, I was hoping to find one that has recorded interesting artists in the alt/indie rock, power pop, or soul genres. [more inside]

I would like to surprise my husband with an outdoor speaker system. Please give me advice about whether to go wired or wireless, which speakers to buy, other things I should know before I start this project. [more inside]
I recently heard this obscure piece and was blown away. What other similar audio work can you recommend? Poetry/short story read well with tight ambient sound effects? Are there any websites that aggregate those types of work? [more inside]
I listen to a lot of audio books on my iphone while driving and working. I also like listening to music in between for short periods, but still need to keep my place in the book. Right now I am using the bookmark app to keep track of the audio book, which seems to be the best app that I have tried so far. But the problem is that whenever I want to switch back to my playlist of music, the iphone music app defaults to the audio book that was last played. Is there any better way of switching back and forth so that the music app can remember that it is supposed to play a playlist and the audio book app remembers to start where I left off in the book? XLD was working fine unless I have too many albums (such as 30 folders/albums apiece). I am not figuring out the interface on MAX for a batch conversion with several subfolders. I basically am using VBR to compress my music to smaller mp3 format. On XLD, there is Preferences-->Preserve directory structure-->subdirectory search depth "0", which makes it work on a small scale, like 10 folders or so, before crashing. So, if anyone can tell me what I am missing on MAX's menu or if they had the problem with XLD and fixed it, I am good to go. I like XLD's interface but it won't process my whole iTunes at a go.
I recently received a Arirang AR-36K karaoke machine. I have hooked it up to my TV and receiver, which has ports only for stereo sound from this input. It has two ports on the front for microphones, which I've plugged in; however, the sound input from the mics isn't mixed into the sound output. I know that the input is actually happening, because the on-screen display reacts to my (terrible) singing, but it just doesn't get mixed -- and the menu option to turn up the microphone volume simply doesn't work (it gives the "command not allowed" icon whenever I press any button on the requisite screen). The hardware microphone volume knobs seem to have no effect, either. Any ideas?
I want to buy an audio interface for home recordings. Specifically, I want to record onto (most likely) a Mac, and I need more than 2 simultaneous inputs, since I will often be recording drums. I would prefer to spend under 200€. Give me your opinion and experiences! [more inside]
I recently found one of my favorite iPhone apps of all time RJDJ the reactive ambient sound generator and "world quantizer" was discontinued by the company and taken off iTunes. Damn! I never got a chance to put it on my new phone. Are there any other reactive music apps out there like it for iPhones? [more inside]

I'm looking for audio and/or video (or otherwise transcripts) of "outrageous" or "far out" interviews or non-music content that more "hard-core" fans of those people would know about, but general fans might not. examples: Noel & Liam Gallagher's "Wibbling Rivalry" or Bob Dylan's conversation with AJ Webberman
I would like music in my home, and I'm gadget friendly and very geeky but not in the consumer audio space (more the computers and video gaming and mobile spaces). So I would like some advice on how to do this. Technical details and specific desires below. [more inside]

I need a new amplifier/receiver for music and TV/home-cinema. I've looked at the Onkyo "network" range, especially entry level around £350-£400, but I am sure I could get my hands on an amp from a few years ago with all the features I desire, and save a bundle. I'd really appreciate your advice. [more inside]
Audiophilia-on-a-budget advice needed: I want to upgrade my desktop listening experience for around $200 or less. Currently reasonably happy using Sennheiser HD-280 plugged straight into my Mac Pro, but borrowing a friend's Total BitHead has inspired me to look further. [more inside]

I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. I'm looking for audio of people saying interesting things about making or listening to music -- movies, youtube videos, hip-hop albums, tv shows, doesn't matter. I'm especially interested in people talking about how music or dancing makes them feel or why they make music, more than details of how they make it.
What's the software or academic paper that isolates sounds by humming them? I remember seeing a demonstration video of this where the narrator removed a phone ringing by imitating its trill. He also removed the guitar from the AC/DC song Back In Black. I think the title was "Isolating Sounds Via Frequency Matching" but my google-fu has failed.
Where can you find copyright free high-quality hip hop beats and loops to be used for rapping over? Something that could be used in an iPhone application that will be submitted to the appstore. Prefereably high-quality wav format and fresh!
Could someone please tell me the original song that features the breath sound with delayed effect that you hear in this sample (check at about 0.06). This is a snippet I recorded from a recent mix by MJ Cole. Perhaps it's even one of Mr. Cole's songs.. but which? And if it is do you think the breath sound was created by him or was it sampled from older material? I'm almost certain I've heard it elsewhere.
