I have a Panasonic VT30 65" plasma and I'm excited about the release of a video game next week. I'd like to celebrate by cashing in some amazon gift cards and adding better sound.
*My bedroom is small, so this stuff has to be low profile.
*I only want to spend a few hundred dollars. Let's say $300-800. I'll upgrade some future day.
I think a standalone receiver is not a sensible option but I'll consider it. Maybe a soundbar with sub is the way to go? If a soundbar really can simulate surround, that's great. If I have to go multispeakers they will have to be low profile.
Thanks for reading. People probably ask this all the time but my search results were pretty poor!

I just moved and am trying to figure out the most elegant network audio solution. Most of the equipment I think I need is already here [below the fold], and I want to figure out if I need to buy anything else, or if what I have already is enough to suit my needs. [more inside]

What Windows XP-compatible software is closest in feel and functionality to Garageband? Apple's music making package is one of the things I miss about my old Mac, but for now I am stuck with working on two PCs. The last AskMeFi question on this was five years ago
; I've tried Acid and Audacity and hate them both. Help me get my groove back!

Short version: Want to piggy back the audio/video output of my receiver onto my cable TV signal.
Long version: I want to take the output of my receiver which is in RCA plugs (2 audio, 1 video) and somehow put that onto coax that ALSO contains my basic cable channels. I'm sure I stumbled onto something like this while looking at home automation stuff months ago, but I'm not finding it now. Effectively what I want is to be able to put my receiver's output on channel 100 or something on my coax. This would allow me to split that coax and run it to other TV's in my house and have the output from the receiver available on any TV on channel 100, while still having the regular cable channels available as normal. This will allow me to play Xbox on any TV in my house with my wireless controller.
I found this
but it only puts the one signal onto coax, it doesn't add it to coax with an existing set of channels. Not what I want, but its the closest thing I've found.
Is this even possible or am I dreaming that I have seen this before?
