yesterday morning when my wife started her brand new audi Q5 2014, it started giving out a weird sound from the rear section, sth akin to horse hoof beating on the road. she got off the car twice to check what's going on and found nothing out of ordinary. after about 40 mins, she parked at her friend's place and then she started hearing the typical sound when the tire is leaking air. she then saw one of the front tires was going flat. the whole sequence of events was a bit traumatizing for her as she is a new driver with less than a year of experience driving any kind of car, and this is a brand new Q5 with only 90 miles on it. later on after auto shop fixed the tire, the weird sound disappeared.
my questions: 1. were the two events (weird sound and flat tire) related? 2. what was that sound? is it some kind of warning system by audi? 3. why didn't the tire pressure monitoring system warn her?

Which carmakers these days (that sell in the US) have really good build quality? I'm thinking high quality interior materials, excellent fit and finish, as well as well thought out interior components like control layouts, displays, and compartments? Maybe carmakers (or models) that are known for little surprising details? I'm now starting to look for a smaller sedan or maybe hatchback/wagon under $40K. Some of the models I'm looking at so far are the Volvo S60/V60, Subaru Legacy/Impreza, Toyota Prius, Audi A4, maybe BMW X1.

We're choosing between a used Audi TT coupe and a used Volvo C30 hatchback - anything we should consider? Do you own either of these cars? Hate them or love anything in particular about them? [more inside]

What do you do with a screw that turns freely and won't unscrew? I'm trying to replace the brake light bulb on my Audi A4, but the screw that holds the brake light assembly in place turns and turns without unscrewing. I assume that the corresponding nut is loose, or that whatever it seats into is broken, but I'm stumped.

I want to buy a fun, impractical, and unusual sports/muscle/fun car for under $5000(USD). This will be my second car, and not my daily driver. Can you offer some suggestions? (It must be available as a stick shift.) [more inside]

My 2006 Audi A4 is having ignition coil problems. And the dealer is saying because it's water damage related, it's not covered under warranty. I have NOT had the engine cleaned. I have NOT driven into a lake and I live in California where rain is minimal. Help me to not be screwed. [more inside]

I would like to go to the drive in on a date in my Audi. The problem? The persistent beep that happens with the key engaged and the seatbelt unfastened. Help me conquer this inconvenience so I can get lucky in one of the classic American dating pastimes. [more inside]

I want to trade in my SUV for a station wagon. I think I've narrowed it down to the BMW 328i and the Audi A4. Can those of you who've driven those cars (or anything from from a similar line; any bmw 3 series, any Audi A4 or TT) share your experiences with me? [more inside]

AutomobileFilter: I was looking at a few cars in the office parking lot and I couldn't help wondering -- why are Audis and Subarus designed with the engine so far forward? I've heard that both these brands of cars generally have the engine placed in front of the front wheels. Is there a technical reason for this, or does it come down to legacy engineering?
