Conflict of interest, but what could possibly go wrong?

Our lawyer, who is amazing and awesome, told me this morning she was considering bidding at the same auction we will bid at this weekend. She hadn't realised until we sent her the contract to look over. Obviously this is a conflict of interest, and my first reaction was that we should find a new lawyer, but on more careful reflection I'm failing to think of how it could really matter. What could actually go wrong here? [more inside]

Casually selling my old clothes on Ebay: fool's game, or viable option?

I'm cleaning out my closet, and I've got a small number (~30pcs) of garments and shoes that seem of saleable quality. Do I have any chance of getting these things sold on Ebay without inordinate amounts of hassle and time? Or is the used-clothes auction business strictly for high-volume, full-time pros? If anybody's done this, I'd love to hear about your experience. [more inside]

Non-performing Residential Loans

Has anyone figured out how to approach a bank to purchase non-performing residential loans? I've approached a local bank. Although it would probably be in their interest to sell the loans, they don't seem to have a mechanism. I haven't figured out how to crack this nut.

Where do I find foreclosure auctions in NM?

Where does the foreclosure auction when the title transfers from the owner to the bank actually occur and how do I get information about these auctions. I live in NM, but foreclosure auction practices in other states will probably help me figure this out. Also, does anyone have any experience to share on approaching banks regarding properties in pre-foreclosure. Finally, are there forums out there dedicated to these topics. [more inside]

Sleuthing Users' Contact Info on Goodwill Auctions

A few days ago I received an email from a guy I didn't know tipping me off that one of my mother's drawings was being auctioned on Goodwill. To make a long story short, I lost it. Now I'm wondering if there's any way of sleuthing the winner's contact information so I can make an offer to buy it from him/her directly. Any thoughts?

What is the wheat pit like today in the Chicago Board of Trade?

Is the place where the de facto price of grain is set world-wide, the Chicago Board of Trade "wheat pit," still a cacophony of live in-person bidders yelling and making hand signals while wearing platform shoes and bright jackets, or has it become electronic and silent? Or are both types of bidding possible? If it changed, when did it do so and why?

Getting my money back from ebay auction?

I bought an item on ebay, and almost 3 weeks after I paid it hasn't arrived. I've tried to contact the seller to get the package tracking number (since I paid extra for delivery confirmation) through his paypal email address (bounced back) and through ebay's messaging system (did not respond). I don't think I'm ever going to get the item, and at this point I'd like to get my money back as quickly and with as little hassle as possible. Should I initiate a dispute with my credit card company, ebay, or Paypal?

What happens when Sotheby's London changes their mind?

I sent my supposedly authentic Italian music manuscripts to Sotheby's of London (after their music manuscripts expert authenticated them in person in NYC) to be auctioned. After they received them in London, they told me they weren't sure if they were authentic and they wouldn't auction them. Problem is, it's going to cost me a lot to get them back, and it already cost quite a bit to mail them to London. More details within. [more inside]

Online Auction Tips?

Cleaning house, looking to sell books, CDs, toys etc., and I'm LOST. Need advice both specific and general. Is eBay best for books and CDs, or are there other places to get better value? With the 'Net awash in Star Wars paraphernalia, how do I find a price for this elaborate 1998 14" talking Darth Vader? (I've checked books and they're mostly about "vintage" SW toys.) How do I value odd things for my uncle, like this pipe from Germany circa 1890 or earlier, or some Xmas cards circa WWII made by Chinese Xtian nuns in Tsing Tao? If it's not, how are these guys doing well enough to make it worthwhile?
