Asking for a friend. Her husband just told her he wants a separation/divorce, but refuses to move out of the house because he wants to co-parent. Lots of details about why they are heading for divorce, but she needs an attorney that will fight for her and kids. She has talked to two attorneys and they seem soft. Her husband is very smart, manipulative, and willing to play dirty. She needs a strong advocate. Help!

Can anyone recommend a great divorce lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area? (The couple involved have been married for 20 years and have no children, if that matters.)
An immediate family member has been arrested and charged with a felony. I want to protect myself and my spouse and avoid involving ourselves in the situation to the greatest extent possible. Unfortunately, there is a complicating factor. [more inside]
Have you lived in NYC and used a real estate attorney that you loved? Can you please pass on his or her info? If not, do you know how I could find a great real estate attorney here? Not sure how specialized they get, but looking for someone experienced in Brooklyn small single and multi-family buildings. TIA
I am helping a family friend who was in a severe car accident. She is not a native English speaker and has zero experience with lawyers. I have worked with them plenty in a business setting, but never around personal injury. There is no question of fault and she has injuries that will impact her for life. Should we try to negotiate with the insurance company ourselves and save the 30% fee an attorney would take? [more inside]
I'm looking for a good criminal defense attorney in Atlanta who can help with a first degree forgery charge. I'm also looking for help to find an attorney online, as nobody involved lives in Georgia. [more inside]
Asking for a friend. Friend needs an attorney in New Jersey who specializes in employment law. This is fairly urgent due to her employer's current actions. I have read the Metafilter wiki page Get a lawyer and we are both actively searching for attorneys in her area. I am specifically seeking personal recommendations from MeFites who have had good experiences with an attorney with this specialization. Northern NJ/nearish NYC is a plus.

I am leaving on a 3 month trip next Monday. I just found out a few days ago that my condo building is planning on changing everyone's lock and issuing new keys during the time that I am gone. I'd like to designate a friend as my legal proxy ONLY in this matter. How do I do this? [more inside]

I am an attorney working for a midsize firm in the US. I am fairly happy with my job, but have always wanted to work abroad (particularly in the UK). I have no clue how desireable (if at all) US licensed attorneys are abroad or how to go about finding job openings. I found several legal recruiters based in Europe online, but the sites are a bit sketchy. I know that there are various legal exchange programs, but they are generally in non-profit fields or send you to third world countries (which is admirable, but not what I am looking for). Any thoughts, resources or insights would be greatly appreciated.
The title says it all really—I need a recommendation for a criminal defense attorney for someone who may be charged with domestic violence and/or rape in New York City.
Because we are in New York state, when we close on our refi, we are going to have to sign all of our paperwork in person. As I understand it, New York law requires this. We had our own lawyer present when we closed on the purchase of this house. Should we have one when we close on the refinance? If so, Why? If it matters, we are in Nassau county, and we are refinancing with the original bank who has owned our mortgage since we purchased the home.
Should I move to a bigger city to find a job even if I don't line one up and even if I have no savings? [more inside]
I have been recruited for a senior level management position at a startup. Things are moving fast and I'm about to hire an attorney — but I'm unsure of the fees and how much I might end up paying. Can any MeFi attorneys weigh in and tell me what a normal cost range would be for this kind of work? [more inside]

Several of my family members and I are working together to help select, coordinate and pay for legal representation for a family member (I'll call him Bill). The attorney we have hired will not take our calls nor respond to phone messages or emails sent to him, and Bill has an important hearing coming up. [more inside]
Lawyers: how do you decline helping out your friends? [more inside]
Asking for a friend who lives in Virginia: my friend's mother has had a chronic illness for many years, and over the past year her health has begun to steadily decline, and she has been phasing in and out of bouts of dementia. Lately the bad days seem to be getting more and more frequent. No one has power of attorney at the moment; I'm trying to help him get it in place ASAP. [more inside]
My mother was recently in a car crash near her hone in Northern Virginia. The other driver was at fault and the insurance companies were sorting it out. She was diagnosed with whiplash at the ER soon after and spenfew days immobile from pain. After recuperating, she went on holiday to Europe While there, she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism that doctors believe may stem from the crash. A. Am I correct in believing we need to lawyer up? B. If so, are there recommendations for an attorney in Northern Virginia who could take this case on?
Everyone always tells you that going to law school and being a lawyer will open up all types of job possibilities. I tried being a big firm lawyer and am don't want to continue doing it. I'm looking to figure out life after biglaw and what that actually means. Looking for advice on how to figure out what's next, where to look for jobs that might play to a legal skill set, and how and what to highlight about biglaw experience when looking for the next job. I did an illustration/painting a number of years ago, and have been meaning to further develop it, but never got around to it. Today a friend messaged me to point out a publication which is uncannily similar to my concept. I am...not sure if I am needing to pursue this, or if I am just overreacting and "feeling" like my idea was stolen. [more inside]

My friend has an HSBC Mexico account, that had about 40,000 dollars in it.. he didn't use the account for a year, he called today to get a new checkbook, and found out the account had zero balance in may of 2013, and the account was closed. HSBC Mexico said they can't give more information unless he goes in person to a branch in Mexico. He is willing to hire a lawyer, or Power of attorney, or someone to investigate this in Mexico who legally represent him. He is currently far from mexico and can't make it there any time soon. His mom is in Mexico, can she get power of attorney? Any advice on how to do this? How can he go about finding a lawyer in Mexico who can help him? Or what actions can he take? He suspects fraudulent activity as he did login to his internet banking last year and saw all his money there.

Please recommend an excellent attorney in Sacramento for someone facing drug possession charges. Money is no object.
How many times can a defendant dismiss his defense attorney, probably in an attempt to delay prosecution? A little over a year ago, my next door neighbor did a Very Bad Thing. Please believe me when I say there is no doubt that he did the thing he is accused of. When he is finally convicted, he will probably go to prison for the rest of his life. [more inside]
What would be a realistic and reasonable bill to expect from a US attorney whom you asked to travel long haul (think China) to work with a client for a week? What about a UK solicitor travelling to Australia? Assume when they get there they will put in a 35 hour week. On the travel expenses front, would business class be typically expected when travelling long haul? I know there'll be a range, but would be interested to hear estimates for mid-size and large firms.
My mother is in between work right now, with very sporradic temp gigs that don't pay enough. I think she needs to talk with a bankruptcy attorney, but she's ashamed and intimidated. I'd like to help her by giving her actual referrals. Difficulty: I'm long-distance from her. She is located in Lynchburg, VA. General advice would also be welcome--for example, how long might she be able to drag out the foreclosure and still live in her home? Details inside! [more inside]
I am a web developer in NYC who will soon be working as a contractor. How do I find an attorney who's familiar with contract matters related to this field to draft a contract and related matters? [more inside]
My daugter, age 22, is in trouble a long, long way from home (Burlington, VT; her mom and I are in middle GA) with the family car. She had an accident, her fault. Nobody was hurt, thank heavens, but she was arrested (for the record, not DUI) and the car was towed off and impounded. It is pretty badly damaged and not driveable. There's no other car to use. The disabled one is running up a $50 per day impound fee which I need to stop as soon as I can. Probably I should just give it to a junkyard and let them haul it off, but I've got no notion how to arrange that. More important, what can I do from here to help my girl? Can I find her an attorney by remote control somehow? What else should I be thinking about? Ideas and advice? I would be very grateful!
It's been a long, drawn out, time consuming battle, but finally, after 2.5 years, we're closing in on the finish line. All but one party has agreed to a final offer, and it looks like a settlement is almost certain. I am pleased to say that I have had an excellent working relationship with my attorney and credit us both equally for a significant accomplishment. Here's a question for the attorneys out there. How would you like to be thanked by a client? I've already given my attorney a bottle of tequila for hard work on one of two gigantic briefs. Then I just lost another bottle on a stupid bet I wagered on whether one of the parties to the settlement would agree to the mediator's amount. The big moment we've been waiting for is fast approaching. What to do to celebrate? Recommendations?
I am looking for some memorandum of law wherein attorney fees were awarded in a subsequent motion for costs that were incurred in a previous motion that was (involuntarily) withdrawn. Has this ever happened? [more inside]
