My friend has an HSBC Mexico account, that had about 40,000 dollars in it.. he didn't use the account for a year, he called today to get a new checkbook, and found out the account had zero balance in may of 2013, and the account was closed. HSBC Mexico said they can't give more information unless he goes in person to a branch in Mexico. He is willing to hire a lawyer, or Power of attorney, or someone to investigate this in Mexico who legally represent him. He is currently far from mexico and can't make it there any time soon. His mom is in Mexico, can she get power of attorney? Any advice on how to do this? How can he go about finding a lawyer in Mexico who can help him? Or what actions can he take? He suspects fraudulent activity as he did login to his internet banking last year and saw all his money there.

I'm a single mom of an 8 month old and need to get back to work. I am an attorney, and most jobs I am qualified for require much more than 40 hours/week. I'm flummoxed on how to handle this during the job search process. How can I (delicately) make sure that a particular job will allow me to get home in time pick up my daughter from day care, etc.? How many times can a defendant dismiss his defense attorney, probably in an attempt to delay prosecution? A little over a year ago, my next door neighbor did a Very Bad Thing. Please believe me when I say there is no doubt that he did the thing he is accused of. When he is finally convicted, he will probably go to prison for the rest of his life. [more inside]

What would be a realistic and reasonable bill to expect from a US attorney whom you asked to travel long haul (think China) to work with a client for a week? What about a UK solicitor travelling to Australia? Assume when they get there they will put in a 35 hour week. On the travel expenses front, would business class be typically expected when travelling long haul? I know there'll be a range, but would be interested to hear estimates for mid-size and large firms.

My mother is in between work right now, with very sporradic temp gigs that don't pay enough. I think she needs to talk with a bankruptcy attorney, but she's ashamed and intimidated. I'd like to help her by giving her actual referrals. Difficulty: I'm long-distance from her. She is located in Lynchburg, VA.
General advice would also be welcome--for example, how long might she be able to drag out the foreclosure and still live in her home? Details inside! [more inside]

My daugter, age 22, is in trouble a long, long way from home (Burlington, VT; her mom and I are in middle GA) with the family car. She had an accident, her fault. Nobody was hurt, thank heavens, but she was arrested (for the record, not DUI) and the car was towed off and impounded. It is pretty badly damaged and not driveable. There's no other car to use. The disabled one is running up a $50 per day impound fee which I need to stop as soon as I can. Probably I should just give it to a junkyard and let them haul it off, but I've got no notion how to arrange that. More important, what can I do from here to help my girl? Can I find her an attorney by remote control somehow? What else should I be thinking about? Ideas and advice? I would be very grateful!

It's been a long, drawn out, time consuming battle, but finally, after 2.5 years, we're closing in on the finish line. All but one party has agreed to a final offer, and it looks like a settlement is almost certain. I am pleased to say that I have had an excellent working relationship with my attorney and credit us both equally for a significant accomplishment. Here's a question for the attorneys out there. How would you like to be thanked by a client? I've already given my attorney a bottle of tequila for hard work on one of two gigantic briefs. Then I just lost another bottle on a stupid bet I wagered on whether one of the parties to the settlement would agree to the mediator's amount. The big moment we've been waiting for is fast approaching. What to do to celebrate? Recommendations?

Another driver ran a red light and hit my car, leaving me with minor but permanent injuries. Their insurance company accepts liability and wants to settle, but their offer is about 20% lower than what I'm willing to accept. I've handled everything myself to this point (and have compiled 700+ pages of well-organized documentation), but the insurance company won't budge and it seems I'll need an attorney to negotiate the last 20%.

I am looking for recommendations for the best employment attorney in NYC to advise and represent a female family member, who was until recently a highly placed executive with a major US corporation, in a case involving her questionable and unfair termination. She appears to have valid concerns and solid reasons for legal action, including but not limited to personal defamation, religious bias etc. She lives in Manhattan and is just beginning her search to find the best in the field. I told her I would check with you. Any advice and/or referrals would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have an attorney. My attorney has made me unhappy in several ways, mostly by procrastination. However, I am afraid that another attorney will not take the case because it's too small. (In the tens of thousands of dollars.) Is it legal for me to ask another attorney if he will take my case before I fire my current attorney? Or must I fire my attorney and take my chances with another attorney not accepting my case? (Attorney #1 took my case primarily because I already knew him.)
