Help me cope with mountain lion stress

I love hiking. It is great cardio and I enjoy it, unlike running which is a boring slog for me. The closest hiking area too me is wonderful, but there has been a lot mountain lion activity there in the past year it is starting to creep me out. Am I just being paranoid? [more inside]

My cat's been biting humans out of the blue

We adopted a cat a couple of months ago. He's about five, and in good health according to the vet. (He was surrendered to a local SPCA for financial reasons.) Starting about a month ago, he's started biting people. He'll get very close, his eyes will dilate, he'll extend his neck toward an arm or leg and he'll often let out a relatively long, complaining meow and then chomp down on the limb. It's scaring the shit out of me and my wife. [more inside]

My new dog broke out of his collar and injured another dog. Now what?

YANML. What's next? Have I covered my bases? Do I need to lawyer up? The short version: My husband and I were walking our dogs. Our newly adopted dog broke free of his collar and ran across the street to attack another dog. My husband reacted fast and broke up the fight quickly. The other dog was not badly injured, as far as we could tell, just a bite on the hind leg. The dog's owner was understandably furious. We exchanged information, I promised we would pay any vet bills that resulted from the incident, and he left. More details inside. [more inside]

Best practices after DDoS attack?

There was a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on my personal website, causing my shared web hosting provider to suspend my account and request that I find another web host. Someone sent me an ominous message on Twitter implying that they were responsible. I have never had anything like this happen before. I have a backup of everything and I can find another web host (with DDoS protection this time), but I am a little perturbed by the experience. Is there anything else I should do? How do I prevent this from happening again?

Attacked by dog, how to get owner to take responsibility?

Help me think straight. I was attacked by a loose German Shepherd while out on a walk with my husband and our two small leashed dogs. What should I do next? The owner is in denial and I am concerned for the safety of myself and others. I think that if I threaten a lawsuit I could scare her into building a fence and reinforcing her door. I'm interested in getting her to take action to keep her dog enclosed or to take it to a behaviorist, not trying to win money in a settlement. [more inside]

Anxiety or something worse?

Wife has shortness of breath- should we be worried? My wife is 29 and physically healthy (eats relatively well and exercises), but recently has shortness of breath on and off. It doesn't seem like a panic attack, as she has no other panic attack symptoms. However, she starts to get scared when its happening which makes it worse. It happens throughout the day on and off for a few weeks and then stops for months at a time. Could this just be stress, or something more serious?

Tips on Fighting Irrational Anxious Thoughts?

I struggle greatly with anxiety and am on a crazy amount of meds simply to sleep and relax. I am doing things to get through such as exercise, yoga and breath/meditating. One of the things that I read and have been implementing is answering 'cognitive distortions' with reality-based answers. Basically, I think I'm helpless (it spirals from an event to "I'm going to lose my job" all the way to "I'm not going to make it"). I've read the books like Feeling Good and do techniques on paper but am not sure how to think realistically and come up with any responses that I believe. This has been going on for some time. Any others who struggle and have tips on how you have tackled cognitive distortions (aka Bullshit Thoughts)? I am not in a hurry and am willing to put in solid effort. I am asking for help but am willing to try to believe I'm not helpless in the long haul. (BTW, I haven't been able to afford a counselor....yet.)

Presentation Panic Attacks

I have panic attacks when I start presentations. This isn't general nervousness - I feel fine leading up to the presentation, and usually chat with the group (between 2 - 20) people beforehand. But the second I turn to start the presentation, the adrenaline kicks in and I struggle like crazy to get through the first section. This is becoming concerning - aside from the trauma of the actual attack - because recently giving presentations has become part of my job. Any help? [more inside]

Dad has heart pain?

My 58 year old dad has been having a squeezing pain in his heart. It has happened a few times, and then just goes away. He went to the emergency room, got a lot of tests done including the stress test, and they determined that his heart is healthy. He has healthy blood pressure and has a manual labor job, and so gets a lot of exercise. The doctor said it might be stress. Does anyone have experience with this? My dad is ready to just try to relieve his stress, but I am worried that it could be something else that the doctor may not have picked up on. Any solutions, including alternative medicine? Thank you!

Do I have anything to freak out about, except freaking out itself?

Almost two weeks ago I suddenly started having strange feelings of lightheadedness, abnormal difficultly concentrating, a lack of coordination (feeling as though I might fall over or run in to things), and visual issues (difficulty focusing on distant objects, seemingly less aware of my periphery - though there are no noticable gaps in my visual field). I've had these, albeit with decreasing frequency and severity, since that time. I'm often very fearful during these episodes (which can last 4-5 hours at a time, the dizziness/lightheadedness sometimes all day), fearing permanent brain damage and having extreme feelings of derealization. I've come to the conclusion that at least some of these symptoms are due to panic attacks. Does that explain it all though? [more inside]
