Just switched to AT&T "Elite" Internet service from Comcast cable modem in a cost saving measure. AT&T promises download speeds of 3-6M Bps for this service (as opposed to 2-3 for their Pro service, which is a few bucks cheaper), but I'm only seeing a whisker above 3. Is this normal? Anything I can do? [more inside]

What's the best wireless phone service for the NYC area?
I'm as fed up with Verizon as the next guy, but my limited experience with an iPhone in Manhattan left me with dropped/missed calls and very intermittent access to maps, etc. (unless already cached).
Putting aside fun features that usually
work, and imagining your life depended on receiving or making a phone call, which network would you choose?*
*Please speak from experience with a carrier and nevermind the silly games they play (e.g., crippling bluetooth, etc.); I simply need a service that doesn't miss or drop calls.

What is the best value QWERTY phone that one can buy used (unlocked or At&T/Cingular), and where from? EBay didn't yield any crazy deals.

What cell phone should I buy? I have AT&T. I had a Blackberry Pearl, and it just broke. I have not been that happy with it, so am considering getting a new phone. Text messaging is the feature I use most, aside from the actual phone. [more inside]

Family got iPhones + family plans. If I try to port my old number, it can't be added to the family plan because we are in different "markets". How do I get this accomplished / Who do I complain to at AT&T? [more inside]

iPhone - AT&T/Cingular or T-Mobile (USA) ?
I'm in NYC, peak minutes usage < 300, 50% of minutes to same 4 numbers, data usage likely to be high. Criteria: minimize the following, in order of priority: cost, dropped calls/network weirdness, customer service craziness, crap-tastic contracts.
I'm obviously fine with hacking/unlocking my iphone.

I need to have a phone jack put in for AT&T service in Chicago (Andersonville), because the previous tenants converted all the phone jacks to cable outlets. Can anyone recommend the services of a handyman, or even suggest who I would have to look up to get it done more quickly than AT&T will? [more inside]

SanFranciscoWiFi: I currently have DSL service with AT&T. It came with a DSL modem/wireless router thingy from 2WIRE. Can I replace the 2Wire? If so, what are my options? Please speak to me as if I were a child because in the area of networking, I am.

My DSL modem is fried and out of warrantee.
AT&T wants $100 for me to buy a new one, or they'll give me a free one if I sign a new contract. I'll likely be moving in three months, and a hundred dollars is pretty pricey when I can find used ones on eBay for less than twenty. I'm pretty technical, but the problem is that I don't know G.DMT, G.Lite, or T1.413 from a hole in the ground. What requirements should I look for in a DSL modem to be sure that it's compatible? (I'm in Connecticut.)

I use an iMac and carry a Siemen's SX56 Pocket PC from AT&T. I recently purchased PocketMac Pro to sync the two, and contacts, appointments, and little stuff is fine, but I can't get a decent connection speed to transfer MP3's. Is there something I'm missing here? In addition, I run Virtual PC and can't sync through ActiveSync, with a USB cradle. Help me, please.
