ATM fee overcharge

Taking money out at a non-my bank ATM last night, the screen stated you will be charged a $2.50 fee. However, looking at the receipt after it spit my money out, they actually charged a $6.00 "terminal fee". I realize its only $3.50 difference but that type of misleading fraud just makes me boil. What are my options to correct this? Is there a reporting agency that is interested in this type of thing? Is the store that the ATM was by responsible for this? It does say on the receipt that the Terminal Fee was paid to the business that the ATM was out in front of. But no where on the ATM does it say $6, just the $2.50 that they make you agree to.

Urgent: I'm in Brazil and my debit card is being rejected at all ATMs (HSBC etc). I don't even get to the stage of entering my pin number, it tells me that my card is invalid automatically after inserting it. I've called my bank and been told that I should be able to lift the block online by registering that I'll be abroad, which i've done to no avail. Help!

Did I get free money?

How long does a third-party ATM have to debit my account? Slightly over a month ago, I stopped at a third-party ATM in a convenience store and withdrew $200 as a debit transaction. The authorization/debit has STILL not posted to my Wells Fargo account. I know that with a physical check, there is a limit on how long before the charge would be denied, but is there something similar for ATM transactions? I really hate having to mentally subtract the $205.50 (because of fees) every time I look at my balance....

International ATM Card

What is the best credit/ATM card to use overseas? I will be traveling to Europe in May and, after calling Chase, I found out that each ATM transaction will haveat least $6 in fees. There has to be a better option. I have read around and know that Capital One has no currency conversion fees which is nice, but can I use a Capital One card at an ATM? What other options do I have?

Pragobanky?

Any bank recommendations in Prague? I need to open a Czech bank account so I can get direct deposit from my Czech employer. My main bank account is in the U.S., so the Czech one would be for checking only -- savings not required. Anyone have any experience and suggestions?

All I'd be using this for is simple checking... withdrawing cash at the ATM and using a check card for purchases. Being able to check my account online would be a major, major plus, though. And of course I want to keep monthly fees and ATM/check card usage fees as low as possible...

Oh, and in case it's not clear: I'm physically located in Prague. Using the account outside of the country would be nice, but isn't that high on the priority list.

Is It Smart To Have My Foreign Employer Pay Me In Their Country?

Being a 21st Century kind of guy I find myself now doing long-term work for a few companies overseas (India and the U.K.). I would like to be able to open a bank account in each country and just get the money I need via ATM. I'm thinking that since the dollar sucks it would probably be better financially for me long term.

Is this a smart move? How hard is it for citizen of the US open a bank account in a foreign country?
Do I have to report that income? And if so will I end up getting taxed twice?

Traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico next week. Looking for advice and information about money while I'm there. A friend and I will be spending some time in Oaxaca, Mexico in July. We are wondering about how to get and spend money while we're there. Specifically, whether or not it is better to bring dollars in, or go to ATMs once we arrive. Why? How do conversion rates work? Should we get pesos too? What ratio of dollars-to-pesos should we have? Where is our bargaining power and when is it most effective to offer to pay with dollars versus pesos? Any other monetary info welcome as well. Thanks!

What is the relationship between delis and the owners of the ATM machines that are inside them? Are the machines "free" to the deli owner? Or do the ATM owners pay the delis?
Best US bank for cheap atm withdrawals in Prague. I am going to be in Prague for 6 weeks and have heard the best way to get money is just to use atm machines.
Debit/Credit card fees in Europe

How do I avoid excessive credit card/ATM fees when traveling in Europe this summer? I'll be studying abroad in Europe for 6 weeks this summer, in 6 different countries. I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle money out there. I know that it's best not to carry cash or use local currency exchanges, but is there any particular credit card or bank that I should apply for to avoid conversion fees and other surcharges? Ideally I'd just be able to get cash out of most ATMs without having to pay an arm and a leg for each individual transaction.

Right now I have a checking account (debit card) with PNC Bank, and a credit card with Bank of America, just FYI.

ATM cash deposit dispute

Deposited cash at my bank's ATM. Bank says I didn't. I filed a dispute. Is there any hope that it will be resolved in my favor, or is it my word against theirs? I deposited 31 checks, plus $120 cash, at my bank's ATM. My receipt, which I have, shows the correct deposit amount (obviously) and at the same time debited the account $150 due to "incorrect deposit amount."

If they'd adjusted it by $120, I'd be less hopeful, but I have photocopies of all the checks I deposited, so I can "prove," after a fashion, that I deposited X amount in checks. (Of course they can also say that my photocopies mean nothing, I guess). No checks were for $30 or any combination that could equal $30, so if my copied checks mean anything, I'm probably going to get the $30 back. I'm just wondering about the $120 -- what possible reason do they have to believe the customer put the amount of cash in the envelope that he says he did?

Would welcome thoughts from anyone who knows anything about banks' handling of such disputes.

Brother can you spare a dime?

How much money did people carry pre-ATM?. Alfred Hitchcock often uses the exchange of cash to move the plot of his films. In Psycho a house is purchased with cash. An automobile is too. In Dial M for Murder weekly cash withdrawals of a mere 5 pounds is enough to bring suspicion upon Ray Milland, and in North By Northwest Grant goes 3/4 across the USA with only what he has in his wallet. So I ask How much money did the typical upper middle class man (as most of Hitch's characters are) carry before the advent of the ATM?

From reel .com "Throughout the New York section of the film, Grant is constantly giving cash to people — cab drivers, Plaza Hotel bellhops, the valet service guy, a $50 bribe for his mother (Jesse Royce Landis), and so on. Then he tries to buy a train ticket to Chicago on the 20th Century Limited. After that, he buys lunch in the dining car, bribes a train porter so he can wear his uniform, buys a bus ticket from Chicago to the Illinois farmland, and so on."

Can I use my President's Choice debit card in Mexico ATMs?

CanadaBankingFilter: I need to know if I will be able to use my President's Choice Financial debit card to withdraw cash from ATMs in Mexico. I can't seem to find a straight answer on this topic.

I've tried calling the bank and they say "they can't guarantee it" but say that if the machine has a PLUS symbol, I "may" be able to. But, there are no symbols on the back of my card at all.

I need to know for sure, so I am hoping someone who sees this has successfully withdrawn money using their PCF card from an ATM in Mexico.

Furthermore, I am in a bind, because my paycheck doesn't get deposited into my account until the day after I leave. So I can't even withdraw the money before I go... I will have to take it out down there.

I am going to Puerto Vallarta, if it matters.

Where would I look for information (and a solution) on why I can't use my American (mastercard) ATM card to withdraw money in Hungary? I've been using it for the last 3 weeks, then yesterday, no ATM machine would give me any money. They are all in the 'network,' and I have successfully used these machines before.

My SO in Ireland is also unable to withdraw money from our State-side account.

I've talked to the bank, plenty o'cash, nothing wrong with the account or the cards. But they have no record of either of us trying to withdraw money. What gives?

I would like to be able to find out why this is happening and how long it will keep on happening. Any ideas on where to look or who to call? Many thanks!

ATMfilter: How to prove my ATM really did give me the wrong amount?

My credit union's ATM gave me too little money. It's a moderately small error, however, I have reason to believe this won't easily be resolved. How can I prove there was an ATM error, and what course of action should I take to get my money back? Friday night my husband and I withdrew $200 via our credit union's ATM. In the stack of $20s was a five dollar bill, which meant we received $185 instead of $200. As it was the weekend I emailed their customer service, and followed up with a phone call when they opened today.

The employee I spoke to all but accused me of lying about the $15. She said said someone had printed out my email and given it to everyone in the CU, and the issue had already been referred to the president of the CU, who is supposed to call me back Wednesday. I got the impression the president is just going to tell me there's nothing they can do.

Since I had absolutely no idea where to even begin with this, I started reading previous ATM questions on MeFi. While I'm now convinced this is human error, I'm still not quite sure how to proceed with the CU. I'm concerned because I don't know how this $15 discrepancy can be proven. It seems like a situation where it's my word versus the ATM's. If this is a case of a $5 bill accidentally being placed in the stack of $20s, would the machine even detect the error? What sorts of things should have shown up when the CU looked into this situation?

Do you think it would be effective to give the CU suggestions on how to find the $15 error? It's a small CU in a small town, and I'm afraid they might simply not know what to do in this situation because it's never come up before. What kinds of suggestions can I make?

Why are the numbers 2, 3 and 4 worn out on a local gas station's ATM card keypad?

Tonight I was paying at a gas station and I used the keypad to enter my pin. The numbers 2, 3 and 4 showed tremendous wear compared to all other keys except the enter key. It's the kind of stupid odd trivia that appeals to me. I Googled "common pin numbers" and it seems "123" is pretty common among the unimaginative. But that doesn't explain 2, 3 and 4 being so well-worn, and not 1. Can you?

No surcharge ATMs in Calgary, Alberta?

Are there any no-fee ATMs in Calgary, Alberta? I'll be traveling to Canada this month and would like to know if there are any locations with ATMs that won't charge me a fee to use their machines. On a recent trip to Minnesota, we saw several convenience stores with big signs advertising "No Fee ATM." In the Chicago area, I've found a few locations (mostly credit unions and Woodman's grocery stores) that don't charge a fee to another bank's ATM card holder. Is there anything like that in Calgary? (My U.S. bank doesn't charge me a fee for using other bank's ATMs, but it doesn't belong to a no-fee network, either.)

Are ATMs the perfect machine?

Do ATMs make errors? I realized the other day that after a more than 15 years of constant ATM use, I've never erroneously received too much or too little money from a cash machine. ATMs break down all the time, and they sometimes run out of money, but I've never heard of a cash machine handing out too much or too little money. My question is twofold: First, have any of you ever received an erroneous withdrawal amount from an ATM? Second, how can these machines operate with such an extremely low error rate? Every other electronic/mechanical device that I can think of -- cars, bicycles, computers, electric grids, airplanes -- break down or make critical or catastrophic errors from time to time. But the cash-dispensing functions in an ATM somehow seem to be immune.
