We can't stop here - this is jellyfish country!

Have you ever been to the beaches in the Charleston, SC, area in May? Is the water warm enough to swim in, and how clear is it (jellyfish? seaweed? etc)? Should we instead go further down the Atlantic coast to Tybee Island? Is our attempt to find a new beach hopeless? Should we just go back to the Redneck Riviera (read: Gulf Coast)?

Weekend Tourism Mid Atlantic Region

Looking for suggestions for a fun weekend around Pennsylvania/South Jersey The Mrs and I will travel from NYC to Danville on Friday night.
Starting Saturday morning, we want to do something fun in that region general area before returning to NYC on Sunday.

One alternative would be going to Philly and staying there for the night.
For that, which area of the city has hotels that offer free parking and are connected with the city's sights by public transportation? I don't like driving in urban areas.

Other ideas? Are there any South Jersey coastal towns that offer sights and amenities this time of year, other than the obvious Atlantic city? The Mrs is not big into winter sports so the Poconos are not an option.

When do these magazines hit your mailbox?

When do you get your copy of the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books or the Atlantic?

I'm considering subscribing to the print edition of one or more of these magazines, however, for my own reasons, my decision will be affected by when the magazines will hit my mailbox. For example, the New Yorker is always posted online late Sunday or early morning Monday of each week. The New York Review varies, but the most recent edition was posted online this past Thursday. The Atlantic is trickier, since it's a monthly.

Any info you could give me, like, "By the 5th of every month" or "Usually on a Thursday" or even "Three or four days after it appears online" would help. Also, if anonymity isn't an issue, I'd appreciate to know what region you're in. I'm in the midwest, so anybody who lives there, I'd especially appreciate your input.

Where can I beach-camp on the East Coast in March?

I'd like to get a little sun and sand during my spring break -- minus the party scene. Can anyone suggest a good beach camping spot on the East Coast? My school break is March 10-16, and I'm kicking around the idea of catching a flight south, renting a car and pitching a tent by the ocean. I did see a previous beach camping post but I'm not really looking for camping tips -- more for suggestions for spots beyond Tortuga and Assateague. Maybe in the Carolinas? I know it's not particularly toasty there this time of year, but I live in Boston. Anything above 30 degrees would be a welcome change.

My ideal spot would be:

1) On the ocean
2) Not a super-developed Disneyland of a campground -- I'm fine with primitive, and equally fine with water/showers. State and national parks are always good
3) Sort of close (2-3 hour drive?) from an airport

Is that asking too much? I'm just itchy to get out of this damned chilly city.

Things to see if none of us have ever been? Casinos, drinkin, etc are all good. Anything else random is good too.

Quiet NJ Beaches

What are the quietest, least crowded public beaches within an hour and a half drive of Princeton, NJ? This is going to be a bustling weekend at the Jersey shore, and I am hoping to hit the beach but avoid the crowds.

Metafilter, "magazine" of the future!

If The Atlantic Monthly (or Harper's, or The New Yorker) were founded today, would it be Metafilter? I'm actually with The Atlantic , and I'm writing an article about the future of serious, high brow general interest magazines. IMO, Metafilter provides a good model for what's coming. But I want to hear what you think. I'm especially interested in hearing from people who work in journalism, and magazine journalism in particular. Editors, writers, people on the business side. If you'd like to respond (or talk to me) off the air, write me at "mpoe at theatlantic dot com." Thanks in advance.

Unconventional transportation

Help me get myself across the Atlantic or Pacific without using an airplane. OK, so I'm planning a round-world trip and I'd like to take some non-airplane transport from europe to the Northeast coast of the US, preferably NYC, arriving around mid-August 2007.

Looked at transatlantic cruises via orbitz, didn't see anything. Do you know of a way to get berthing on a ship that is not a cruise? Any mefite experience with this? Alternatively, are there any cruise lines that are out there that I've missed seeing?

Also, please help if you know of trans-pacific options going to Japan, China or (very preferably) Vladivostock, which would take place approximately late April.

Arguments that I can just fly will be listened to, but I'd like to make at least one of these methods ground-based, because the idea is to be off of conventional transportation as much as possible. I'm also looking for someone to join me, I'll be biking across the US and europe on this trip, cheating a bit by taking the trans-siberian railroad.

The cheapest way to cross the Atlantic

If one wanted to cross the Atlantic (west to east) on the cheap, and the time wasn't really a factor, how would one go about doing that? Are there still tramp steamers?

Is there a mid-level way to cross the Atlantic by ship?

Airbus will announce their new "flying cruise ship" (see pictures) this week and it will probably be beyond the cost for most people. But it made me think that we all ideally want to travel like that, but put up with crowded planes because they are fast and relatively cheap. Ships used to be the way to travel across the Atlantic, is it possible to travel by ship across the Atlantic without spending a lot of money? It seems the choices are high-end cruise ship, or low-brow freighter travel. Does an affordable, middle-market quick human transportation by ship service exist across the Atlantic?
