I love podcasts, but it very difficult to find new, quality
programs. I am looking for broadcasted material on a range of topics - including philosophy, the mind, avantgarde arts and lectures by creative, original thinkers (see my list of current podcasts for detail)... Can you help? [more inside]

Does anyone know the name of an educational toy/kit for learning reading skills (English language) which involved a big box/case containing a number of small books with pages of heavy white cardboard, each page bearing a letter combination or a simple word. I think they were comb or spiral bound. [more inside]

Ideas for seeking corporate donations of tech equipment and air travel? I'm one of the co-founders of a free arts/tech workshop happening for the first time this August in Serbia. We've already had some modest success getting funding for this through traditional channels, but I also want to approach hardware companies and airlines to see if they can help us.

Where can I find stickers that look like thought bubbles or speech bubbles? This is a good example of the shapes.
The size needs to be big enough to allow one to write inside the bubble with a pen or a sharpie, and the stickiness must hold it to a large photo poster.

Martial Arts Filter: To make this short and easy, do any of the MeFites in their collective wisdom have any good suggestions on where a 27 year old with no martial arts experience should look to begin learning such in the D.C. area? I not quite that interested in jujitsu, but all other forms I'm wide open to. Any advice you all might have, I certainly appreciate. [more inside]

I work as an Editor Producer in cable news. I've been thinking about moving on so I can have more time with my family, holidays, etc... I'm interested in teaching fine arts at a university level. I have over a decade spent in television but I don't have a masters. I am willing to earn one. Has anyone out there made this transition?

I'd like to do a body cast, but I don't want to "break" the bank. Is there really a difference between regular old plaster of paris and cheesecloth and medical plaster strips?

I'm looking for some really hip websites, magazines or podcasts that comment and report on arts, entertainment, culture and a little (just a little!) on politics. I already read Salon.com, Slate Magazine and Rolling Stone, but I need more. Any ideas?

My friend the painter

I've been looking forward to taking classes at the YWCA Arts & Crafts League in NYC, ever since I found out about it a few months ago. However, it turns out that they will closing after their current term of classes, possibly re-opening in the fall with a reduced slate of classes. What other reasonably priced options are there in NYC (Brooklyn, Queens or Manhatten) for arts & crafts classes? [more inside]

ObscureNewsResearchFilter: Does anyone remember a fairly recent news story regarding a performing arts academy (possibly a music school, specifically) being destroyed by a fire? I want to go even further and say that it happened in Salzburg, Austria, but I may have hallucinated that particular detail. I've googled to no avail.

How would I go about painting on top of color photographs with acrylic paints? I would like to branch out from pure photography and into multimedia; however I have no knowledge of painting process. I am currently taking an acrylics painting course at a commnity college, and while I am beginning to get the basics of applying paint to a canvas, I am at a loss as to how I might prepare a photograph surface for painting. A related question: how about painting on smooth plastic lamps?

Searching for two drawing implements: Firstly, I want a pen with grey ink, nothing too dark, nothing too light. Something with a fine tip. Of course I could get this effect by mixing my own ink and using nibs, but I don't like using them. Secondly I'd like a marker or very broadly tipped pen of the black pigment ink variety to fill dark areas quickly and more importantly, evenly
. I have a dying Staedtler jobby that has since been discontinued, I think. Any advice on brands, models and places to purchase them would be greatly appreciated.

I'm working with a new 6th - 12th grade school focusing on Arts & Technology integrated into the cirriculum. We're looking for software that will allow us to accomplish varying tasks - e-mail for students/teachers/parents, digital portfolio publishing for students, shared discussion space for class comments, teacher/course specfic pages etc. Each student will have their own portable computer as well.
What I'm looking for is pratical thoughts/examples of how to provide this functionality. I've seen some schools using Manila
also seems very promising but perhaps a bit too "big" for us to take on.
Is the weblog paradigm itself a good one to be pursuing to pull this off? Or are we just not ready to go there without significant effort? If you were attempting to create this techno environment for a school (many of whose students and teachers are unfamilar with technology) how would you pull it off?
