It's almost time to choose courses for next semester and declare my major. I am currently a Science Major. I envisioned a career in researching how new technology could be used to treat psychological disorders, but I have a history mental health problems myself, so I am wondering whether I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I am drawn to some of the courses on the humanities side, and part of me thinks studying something more broad could take me out of myself and would allow me to recover. [more inside]
For Christmas, we were given her grandson's baby hand and foot prints painted on by acrylic paint. They are on a few cheap pot holders from Target or somewhere similar. I would like to preserve them but don't know much about crafts, so what would be the best way to save them to ensure they are around for years to come? [more inside]
I had phone and in-person interviews for a new job last week that went extremely well. I think odds are very good I might be hired, but I need a strategy for negotiating a salary! [more inside]
Yep, sorry, another "I quit my humanities PhD and I have no idea how the real world works" thread. Except I haven't actually quit yet; this is more like advance research. It's seeming increasingly likely that I may have to leave ABD for the sake of my mental health, so I'm looking for input on how to manage the early stages of a transition to a career (ideally arts-related) where I'll have little relevant background. This post is also an early step in my effort to encourage more constructive coping behaviors after fairly serious depression. [more inside]
What European language should I learn for the purpose of higher studies, work, and extensive travelling in Europe? I am a bibliophile, cinephile, and love songs with good and meaningful lyrics. Till now I've been enjoying all these, I mean the ones from Europe, in the form of translations and with the help of subtitles. (I write too; not to publish but it's very important to me). I'm a freelance fine artist/illustrator. A good friend suggested an art agent for my work. I'm wondering what the best recourse for this is? [more inside]

Nonprofit cultural organization having a summer event next week with half-hour auditorium time (on screen and live program) then move to restaurant/bar for cocktails...with the friendly "ask" to 50+ people. We have the one-page backgrounder all set. Need help with super-short text for a small-format giving reminder to have on tables and hand out. Perhaps a 4"x6" picture postcard with brief information on the other side? What's the most effective way to state the request/reminder in an appealing way? Just the contact information or is that too brusque? Examples?
I'm going back to school for communications in the fall. I'd like to start gathering career ideas now so I know what to look for when I graduate and also so that I pick the right courses for my career path. When I went in to my undergrad in 2007, I had no idea of what I would do upon graduation. So, I'd like to gather some ideas now and tailor my course selection towards potential career options. I would like suggestions for a summer camp for adolescents that is NOT sports-oriented or competitive in any way. Should be a place with good arts and creative activities, and most important, that actively fosters a culture of social acceptance, kindness, tolerance for quirk. I'm looking for the east coast. I know about many camps on paper, but would like to also hear experiences your kids or you have had at specific camps that sound like this.

I am trying to get my act together. I have an average sized apartment room wall. I want to use it to plan world domination! Well really the domination of my next few years of goals and tasks. Please give me cool or creative ideas for a way to have a huge display of multiple years of calendar, lists and reminders, and events and goals. The only catch is that I cannot repaint or damage the wall in a major way. Long-winded details inside. [more inside]
I know what to wear in New York. (Black) I know what to wear in Tokyo. (Kawaii!) But I have absolutely no idea what to wear to a hip art opening and for a weekend staying in a hip LA hotel. Difficulty factors: poor, frumpy. Please dress me! [more inside]
I really love works of fiction that use the style, setup, or form of another media product as a means of storytelling and sometimes subversion. For example: TEDxSummerisle (complete with tweets and botched livestream) and The Theory of Narrative Causality, written primarily in the form of Livejournal posts by the Sherlock Homes fandom (inc comments and bits of fanfic) as well as GChats, TVTropes, and related media. What other similar works are out there? [more inside]

We have a spare room that we're turning into an Arts & Science room for the kids (13 year old girl and 8 year old boy). It's in a walk-out basement with a painted concrete floor and a window. We have some ideas but little knowledge in how to setup a room for them to create and explore. We have a cheap beginner's chemistry set, some art and craft supplies, and...that's about it. What ideas can we implement with the little expertise and money we have? [more inside]
Hi. I've lived in Portland for several years and have heard about this time based art festival that happens and am interested in experiencing some of it. However the website (http://pica.org/event/tba13/) is a bit overwhelming and I'm not familiar with any of the artists that they mention. Has anyone gone? Are there any events that you would recommend? I'll probably just pick a few at random but if anyone has any pointers I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!

Where can I find paints for kids that are "professional" quality yet not "professionally" expensive? I bought Crayola paints and they are terrible. I am looking for something (a) reasonably priced but pigmented enough get my toddler excited about colors, (b) doesn't require swirling a brush for a good long minute to get the color going, (c) available on the internet. I don't mind if they are messy/unwashable. I don't know anything about colors so please specify both the brand and the type of paint in your recommendation. If the paper makes a real difference, please recommend that too!

I'm at home ill at the moment, watching lots of films and reading a lot (this week I've watched 14 films and read 2 books). I'd like to find sites (or podcasts/lectures/etc) that intelligently examine media and/or popular culture. I regularly read articles on Popmatters and sometimes the A.V. Club (but not so much). What are your favourite film/media crit resources? Podcasts? Lectures? Thank you in advance for any help!

I'm on the board of an arts organization that is in a funding emergency. I'm looking for suggestions of ways to raise money for our organization in a hurry - we've lost funding we were counting on and will lose our paid staff if we can't come up with some answers in a hurry. Why anon? Going public with the degree we're in trouble may make things worse. Details: we're a convening/connecting organization that facilitates other arts organizations and individual artists/musicians/creatives activities. We do some programming and help other organizations and individuals develop their programming and artistic careers. Most organizations like us are funded by supporting organizations and or a small percentage tax but we weren't set up that way and all arts organizations in our region - shoot the whole country - are struggling. GroupCommitmentFilter: I've been trying to put together a large group of people to participate in an artistic performance-based hobby that they all claim to enjoy. I'm the group leader, and it feels like I'm herding cats when it comes to getting people to commit to attending training sessions so that our shows will be of a high quality. I'm constantly altering my plans so that the least experienced people aren't left behind. How can I get people to step up their game and commit to the group without alienating them? [more inside]
