From the 1940s on, what songs/artists are key to trans* issues in rock?

This coming week begins the revisiting of my intro to rock music course syllabus. I will need your help. One key topic is considering transgender issues in rock music, from~1940s to present. What songs and artists are essential to discuss here? [I'm] not quite asking for a list of trans artists, but for songs, themes, and personas that open up to questions of queerness. [more inside]

Precedents for cutting a school program to make schools equal?

School system is trying to demonstrate equality of education across schools to comply with a longstanding federal court order. One way they are trying to achieve this is by taking away programs that are only offered at one school. Looking for other examples where this type of decision has been made, and perhaps, overturned. Should I stick with Sciences or switch to Humanities?

It's almost time to choose courses for next semester and declare my major. I am currently a Science Major. I envisioned a career in researching how new technology could be used to treat psychological disorders, but I have a history mental health problems myself, so I am wondering whether I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I am drawn to some of the courses on the humanities side, and part of me thinks studying something more broad could take me out of myself and would allow me to recover. [more inside]

Need help brainstorming/planning transitions to a postacademic career

Yep, sorry, another "I quit my humanities PhD and I have no idea how the real world works" thread. Except I haven't actually quit yet; this is more like advance research. It's seeming increasingly likely that I may have to leave ABD for the sake of my mental health, so I'm looking for input on how to manage the early stages of a transition to a career (ideally arts-related) where I'll have little relevant background. This post is also an early step in my effort to encourage more constructive coping behaviors after fairly serious depression. [more inside]

meta stories are meta

I really love works of fiction that use the style, setup, or form of another media product as a means of storytelling and sometimes subversion. For example: TEDxSummerisle (complete with tweets and botched livestream) and The Theory of Narrative Causality, written primarily in the form of Livejournal posts by the Sherlock Homes fandom (inc comments and bits of fanfic) as well as GChats, TVTropes, and related media. Recommendations for the Time Based Art Festival in Portland

However the website (http://pica.org/event/tba13/) is a bit overwhelming and I'm not familiar with any of the artists that they mention. Has anyone gone? Are there any events that you would recommend? I'll probably just pick a few at random but if anyone has any pointers I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!
