Have you lived in Europe on an artist visa?

How difficult is it to secure an artist visa to live in an EU country? Does it vary greatly from country to country? It seems like there are an awful lot of American musicians and artists living hassle free in Berlin for instance... I know there is plenty of visa info out there for Americans wanting to live abroad in Europe, but I have found little in the way of solid, first hand info on this loophole (?) for working as a writer/artist/DJ in Europe. I understand most of the rules in place regarding work visas are there to prevent non-EU citizens from taking work that could go to a European, that's clear enough. But, say I was a writer who received a decent sized advance for a book from a US publisher and wanted to go write it in Paris, is it simply a matter of applying for the mysterious artist visa, proving I have the means to support myself and voila? Are there other issues at play? It also seems that there are loads of North And South American techno producers living in Berlin now, are they all similarly on artist visas? Doesn't the fact that they are playing gigs on a regular basis over there take away work form German DJs? If anyone has first hand experience of working in Europe legally as an artist and could clarify some of the process for me, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

What would be the vows someone would take entering the artist's life?

If the three vows of the Franciscans and Dominicans are "chastity, poverty and obedience," what might be the vows that the artist takes? (I mean artist, of course, to cover writers and so on.) I ask this question because for people in a religious order, it is useful to remember what they are sacrificing; to keep it in mind as a given. My friend and I (we're both published novelists in our thirties) were talking last night about losing heart; the difficulty of making art when there are pretty much no rewards, often very little money, and the impossibility of knowing whether one's work will ever be valuable enough to the world to have justified all the sacrifices.

I thought the life of the artist has something to do with the life of someone who joins a religious order, but I wonder what the vows for the artist would be.

So, hive mind... what do you think?

Calling all art fans!

I need ideas for a piece of artwork to write about. Okay, I'm definitely not in tune with art. I'm taking a class (basically it's Art History 101). I have to write a paper over the next few weeks on a piece of art. Really, this is a very simple paper. I would just like to find a piece of art that I enjoy and my internet search is so broad right now that I'm just bombarded with...too much. I'm not finding anything I want to commit 5-10 pages to. And I can't seem to come up with any names at the moment either. I just know the mefites can help!

The parameters of the paper: Any painting or sculpture made between 1 AD and 1700 AD. That's it!

So, art fans, who should I be looking at? What pieces make you stare in awe? I know everyone has different tastes but I'd really like a launching pad here. Some names or at least a great page on artists of an era. Thanks so much!

Seeking blueprint drawings of windows and doors for art project!

Is there an architect or graphic designer in the house? I need line/blue print style images of windows and doors for art pieces I am designing. Please help! I am working on some art/architecture projects that require blue-print style line drawings of windows and doors. Not the floor plan style, but front-on views (I’m not articulating this well). Ideally these would be in illustrator or photoshop friendly formats. Is there anywhere online (or even in books) that have something like this? I have googled and I get are links to birds eye view images for architectural floor plans or exploded views from window manufacturers, which are not what I need.

Bonus for free, high resolution (I intend to blow them up fairly large) and downloadable, but I'm happy to shell out a meager sum for images that will suit my needs.

Metafilter pals please help me out!

Thanks!

creativity, cognition and the book

I'm working on my PhD in artists' books at the moment. Recently, pursuing aspects of creativity from a cognition-and-creativity viewpoint has become interesting to me. I need a toehold on the science, here. I have an art background rather than a science one though, and I'd appreciate advice on recent books and publications on cognitive aspects of creativity, and in particular aspects that have to do with reading and empathy (...in a creative context). A touch of lazyweb from me, but if you can help me pinpoint something relevant to get me speaking the right language about the topic, I'd be grateful.

Help me find an artist for collaboration.

I have a story and I'm looking for an artist to collaborate for little to no money on a sci-fi comic book. I will pay for the actual production (it will be a limited run to accompany a record), so I have at least that to offer to the artist. Know of any websites/forums that help foster this labor-of-love type collaboration between media? So far, I've placed ads at tribe.net and in the rpgnet forum for free art/writing.

Do you know of any other places where I might find an excellent artist for said collaboration? (Of course, mefites and friends are welcome to inquire within.) Thanks in advance!

Mägo de Oz to Manu Chao...what other awesomeness am I missing out on? Looking for Spanish music recommendations. Latin America Spanish preferred, but all is welcome. I am wanting and needing to learn a lot of Spanish very quickly. I have fallen in love with Mägo de Oz and Manu Chao, and would like to find more bands along this spectrum, and beyond. Links to websites with lyrics and/or translations are a big plus too! Also taking suggestions for how to incorporate more Spanish into my daily life.

FYI, I really dig Manu Chao because the lyrics are simple and easy for me to learn and sing along to. I dig Mägo de Oz because they $O#*@ kick aaasssss! More please!

Where are those street artists in lower Manhattan who make children's nameplates?

Manhattan street artist filter: If you frequent lower Manhattan, have you ever seen the artists who create colorful, illustrated nameplates for children on the spot? Please tell me where you have seen them working in recent weeks. I have one for my two older children, but have not gotten one for my youngest child. I would like to present them as a set, so I need one more.

The finished piece of art is severely rectangular, about 8 by 28 inches. The artists appeared to use pieces of cardboard dipped in an oil paint or similar medium, and used the cardboard as their "brush." One has letters built of dolphins, the other is decorated with pandas and flowers. They cost $15-$20.

I have a person in NYC who will get the piece for me and send it on. But they have not spotted these artists working in the time they have devoted to the search. All the artists I saw working in this fashion were Asian men and women, but it might have caught on with others.

If you have seen these artists at work recently, please say where and at what hour? Thank you, MeFi.

Starting to collect (somewhat cheap) art. Can anyone recommend online galleries capable of doing sales so I can see what else is out there? I'm in Boston and I've purchased a few small pieces from some of the local artists (prints and paintings, mostly). At some point, I'd love to have big bucks to spend on art, but given that I generally like quirky/interesting pieces by younger artists, I've been able to find things I like in my price range. I'd like to be able to keep my eyes out for more.

I'm looking for sites like Concrete Hermit--quasi-curated, just a few artists and works at a time. Etsy is nice, but I find it way too overwhelming to sift through. (Or are there sites that sort through Etsy for you--best of Esty like?)

Can anyone recommend other sites I might like that actually allow you to purchase works?

Why do professionals in music and art like to use Macbooks? Many music artists such as DJs and design artists like to use Macbooks for their work? Why do they prefer Macbooks over (for example) a Dell when the Dell is much cheaper and can be more easily upgradeable at a cheaper cost.

I have heard that Macs can load certain software at a faster speed such as Photoshop (3-5 seconds faster probably) but that still doesn't justify a $200-$300 difference.

English listing of artists from promotional video of Chinese 2008 Olympics?

Is there an English listing of all of the artists found in the China 2008 Olympics promotional video/theme? Specifically, I'd like to know the artists from 2:59, 3:24, and 4:00.. but I'm sure a listing of everyone would be helpful to more than just myself ^_^

indie art sought for anniversary

Looking for quality art print/commission for an anniversary present - any good sources? Hi everyone -

I'm looking for an anniversary pressie for my indie art obsessed hubby - it's our 7th, and we've had a weird year, so I'm thinking of a lucky 7/bad 13 kind of theme.

Can you rec either a young artist for a commission or a good site for this kind of stuff? His tastes are:

- banksy
- www.chrisbishop.com
- robots
- blix
- show posters
- the obey guy

thanks!

Would it be wrong to paint my own version of a painting I like?

I stumbled upon a print of a painting selling online (sold by the artist thru a third party site) which I really love. I’m creative, so rather than buy the small and expensive print, I thought it would be fun for me to paint my own version of it.

What are the ethics/copyright issues of this?... I would not be selling the painting or trying to pass it off as my original idea, just making it to keep for myself.

I don’t think it would be a big legal issue, but I am also interested in how original artists might feel about something like this.
Artists: Would this bother you? Would you feel like you were losing a sale? Any other thoughts?

Recommend me good modern violinists

Can you recommend me great modern violinists? Like Jo Young-wook, Paul Cantelon, etc. I'm starting to learn to play violin, and like many classical violin stuff, but I like more modern stuff like:

Jo Young-wook (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance OST)
Yann Tiersen
something from Emir Kusturica and Paul Cantelon.

What do you recommend me?
