I stumbled upon a print of a painting selling online (sold by the artist thru a third party site) which I really love. I’m creative, so rather than buy the small and expensive print, I thought it would be fun for me to paint my own version of it.

I want to generate a list of visual artists working in NYC. Just the ones with established, active careers and gallery representation -- this is so I can get a new internship. I'm especially interested in artists in their 30s and 40s.

I can't find a cool, graphical web engine for identifying similar bands that I once used -- input a band, and it would generate a neat display of others, with your pick at the center and the others radiating out with the closest being the most similar. [more inside]

Artists: Do you use pose books (or CDs) for reference or practice? Until recently I never knew there were so many. Which are best? Is one the be-all/end-all? Do you find "pose-dolls" helpful, and if so, are there better ones than the stiff wooden mannequins at the local crafts store? [more inside]

I need ideas for a "job" for my wife to help pay the bills while she is building her business. Her degree is in illustration, but while creative work would be nice, it is not required. We are already working the temp agencies and other obvious avenues. I was wondering if other artistic MeFites had novel or unique ideas. [more inside]

I've written a feature length screenplay. I showed it to a friend who's an editor at a publishing company in the UK. He suggested I consider doing the script as a graphic novel. Is there a resource on the web for writer's and artists to connect? Also, is there a guide to transform my movie from screenplay format to comic book format?

Name that artist: He's Japanese or Japanese-American, judging from his name. He paints (or painted?) busy 1920s-ish city street scenes, full of old cars and people in the dress of the day, generally very small and dwarfed by the (New York?) buildings around them ... Perspective was usually from far away, perhaps in the sky. Charming paintings, very detailed, with humor and often an almost cartoon sensibility. I seem to remember sometimes many umbrellas ...

Is there such a thing as an Agent or Manager for an artist? Something similar to that role in the music or acting industry. If so, under what woodwork would these people be located?

I would like to give my mother a pastel portrait of my grandmother as a gift for my mother's upcoming milestone birthday. However, I'm having a very hard time finding an artist who would create a quality portrait based on a photograph, despite having a well-regarded art college in my home city. Everything I look at looks more like a portrait that would win a prize at the county fair than something I'd want to give as a gift. I'd like to spend less than $1000.00 US. Any suggestions?

So I started a new site which is basically endowment bait for underappreciated visual artists. I want to get lots of people involved; who are your favorite young, new, upcoming or otherwise underappreciated painters, sculptors and photographers (etc.)? This is proving an excellent way for me to see all kinds of stuff that doesn't get to the few good galleries near where I live or the big museums that I visit whenever I can.

So I have this highly artistic, yet sometimes shockingly lazy friend. In an effort to get him to complete something more substantial than a brief sketch in his notebook, I've cooked up a plan wherein I become his manager, and take charge of designing and maintaining his web site, advertising his name, booking space in shows, and printing, selling and shipping his work. We've worked out most of the details, and he is already starting to finish pieces, yet I am at a loss as to how we should divvy up the eventual income. How much would you all say is a reasonable portion for a manager to expect? Twenty-five percent? More? Less? I'd certainly appreciate help from any experienced individuals out there.

I would like to start doing some messy art: oil painting and maybe some metal sculpture. But my NYC apartment doesn't have any space for this. I was wondering if there are any studios in New York City (or Brooklyn) that one can rent (or share) by the hour. I won't be using it enough to rent the space for long periods. I might use it once a week. I might go a month without using it. The perfect place for me would be reasonably priced and stocked with basic equipment, i.e. easles. If there isn't a place like this, someone should start one. Not a bad business model for luring wanabe artists.

My mother is spending a few weeks traveling around Thailand, partly with a group of fellow weavers, spinners, dyers and knitters and partly on her own. She's very interested in textiles and wants to visit Thai textile artists and vendors. I've suggested that she shop in Chiang Mai, where she will be for a few days, and the villages in that area, but Chiang Mai and Chatuchak Market in Bangkok are the extent of my Thai knowledge. Does anyone here have more specific recommendations for her trip?

Question for self-promoting artists. Any advice on how/where to promote oneself online, what pricing is most likely to make sales, how to build an online reputation, etc? IANAA (i am not an artist (at least, not anymore)) but I my significant other is, and I am curious about alternative business models for artists as the gallery scene is a pain to get into.
