My wife wants to start a business making art for kids. She plans to make an original painting and then customize a canvas print with a kid's name. Any suggestions on an inexpensive way to get canvas prints? Any way to order such a service wholesale?

There's a lot of threads here about the meaning of art, and also a lot of great stuff about the beauty of CD cover art. What I want to know, is what it all means. Why do so many CDs featuring a white line art border, sort of like Victorian wall paper? Is there a way to tell what sort of music is inside by the picture outside? Is there a secret language of icons or symbology? Or is it just packaging? And if it is, is there some kind of marketing ploy to attract particular audiences? Does a sepia cover with a guitar and boots always mean country music? How am I being manipulated by album art? And where can I learn more about what it means, not just what it looks like?

I am looking for a store in Manhattan, New York where I can buy curious decorative objects: pop art, retro kitsch, odd memorabilia (not sport-related), ancient ad posters, antique swag, Americana, etc. Quality, authentic stuff, not crap; though I'm not against mass-produced items. [more inside]

I have several large paintings (5 x 5 or so) and am moving into a new apartment. I know from experience at my current apartment that I like to move stuff around and that I don't like holes in the walls. What's involved in hanging paintings from the ceiling like galleries often do?

Let's say I wanted to have some fine art (paintings) shipped professionally. That's museum-style professionalism I'm looking for. Going to NYC, coming from various parts of the country/world. Where they're coming from isn't important - this is entirely made-up, a small part of a budget as part of a hypothetical project. Can you give me any sort of ballpark figures, considering various sizes and various points of origin?

Years ago at school, I remember a video on Afro-Futurism. More than one instructor screened the video for my classes, so I've seen it a handful of times - but I can't remember the title, or where I can find it. I'm 90% sure it featured Kodwo Eshun extensively, as a "time traveler" who was researching the roots of Afro-Futurism and technology. It was focusing on music, mostly.

I need help identifying an obscure, ancient-looking sculpture. A picture of it appears pinned to the inside of a door in a photo of Jim Morrison holding a gas mask. Here is the photo of Jim
My interest is in the photo over his left shoulder. Try not to be distracted by the one over his right shoulder.
If you crop out the item and turn it right-side up, you get this

What is the best way to finish a soapstone carving? I have tried car wax, mineral oil and linseed oil - all applied with a leather sham, and all based on recommendations, but all unsatisfactory. I sand in gradations from 80 grit to 1500 grit but nothing that I do results in that smooth, shiny, almost translucent quality that I have seen in other soapstone carvings. I do all my carving and finishing by hand, no Dremmel or similar.

Art history / criticism question: I'm an art lover, but not someone who has spent a lot of time reading about "movements." I'm now interested in a book that will help me understand the history of ideological conflict between schools of thought (Classicism vs. Impressionism, or The New York School vs. Pop art, etc).
Taxonomy is less interesting to me than a more abstract approach to opposition. Can anyone recommend some reading to me?
