I am looking for the name of an artist that had a studio in NYC during 9/11. Their paintings were huge (7 to 10 feet high min) with a planet or part of a planet with great surface detail and high contrast - black or very dark background. The works were stunning. [more inside]

This is driving me insane. What is the name of the 19th century American folk painter, called something like Franz Vogl, Kogl, Vogel, Fogel - something Austrian sounding - who drew very distinctive landscapes featuring buildings with mildly distorted perspectives and a lot of horizontal lines, usually titled below with calligraphic captions like "Miss Joanna Cunningham's House." I live in Madison WI and am looking to move to a larger city, under the impression that being in a larger city will provide me with more exposure and greater opportunities. I was thinking of moving to the outskirts of Chicago because it's close to my family in Madison and I love it there. I also miss Denver CO where I was born, but am unsure what kind of an art community it has. Does anyone know what cities are best for making a living as an artist? I have a degree in illustration but am also trying to get into gallery shows as well if that helps. Thank you very much for any advice.

Having read a little about Vincent Van Gogh's life, I have a feeling there must be hundreds of technically proficient painters around with an interesting (and joyful) view on the world who will never be discovered because their personal story is not compelling enough. Where might I start looking for them and their work?

I seem to remember reading somewhere, or possibly listening to a story on NPR, which talked about Norman Rockwell being a subversive artist. The tone was of a researcher having talked to his contemporaries and concluding that Rockwell was in a way being ironic or sarcastic in his paintings. I also vaguely remember hearing/reading that there were small clues in some of his paintings indicating this. Any help finding more information on this? [more inside]

Art museum painting framing question. A common style of framing in art museums --- especially with abstract paintings such as Cy Twombly and Mark Rothko's works --- involves a thin strip of wood around the edge of a painting, perhaps with a few-millimeter gap between the edge of the canvas and the inner edge of the wood. The strip of wood is usually flush with the face of the painting. That's all there is to it. I would like to replicate this effect with some paintings I have. [more inside]

Help me remember this painting! The subject is three people in a cafe or club. One (a soldier I think) is checking out a woman across the room. She in turn is checking out another man who happens to be checking out the first. If I recall correctly, a green light is shining down on at least one of the subjects, the gay man. This was possibly painted in Weimar Germany, but I could be wrong. The style certainly fits into that time period. Thank you metafilter.

Name-That-Artist-Filter: Posted to the blue a couple years ago. Male painter. Possibly lived in California. Somewhat well known. Pictures of Victorian-era girls and teddy bears and other animals, some with slightly oversized heads and eyes, all with a vaguely weirdish feel to them. Sorry, that's all I can remember. Thanks in advance for hoping me.

What are some examples of boundary breaking art in the 20th and 21st centuries? Has there been any art that caused riots, made huge headlines, caused masses to reevaluate their lives and societies? For the purposes of this question I would like to define art in the broadest possible way.
