Mom's been arrested and I need to keep her fallout from affecting me.

Mom's been arrested, what do I do. Long story follows. I've been having problems with my mother for a long time - though my problems with her culminated in her arrest. She picked a fight with my father over the smallest topic - a project for a class that I'm in while I'm taking a year off (I'm a 20-year-old university student) - and she started beating up on my father. I had to physically restrain her and force both of them apart, and at least I can physically restrain her. After repeated attempts to let her arm free and trust her not to hit my father with her fists, purse, and hairbrush, I told her I'd call the police, and I did. She is now away on a restraining order, and I have probably irrevocably fucked up my interactions with her. There's no question that she deserved what she got and that she's a consistent perpetrator of abuse against my father.

I'm still frightened out of my wits. She's emotionally manipulative, and she isn't aware it's her fault (she claims my father provoked her - she threw the punches, not Dad) , and the greater problem is that I think she's either intentionally or unintentionally been trying to emotionally wear me down. It does not help that her entire family is even worse than she is; I can't talk to any of them about this because they're all batshit. Also, my entire support network, except for one parent, is not in the same physical location, so I feel like shit.

Also, my tuition may be in jeopardy.

I am figuratively shitting myself about this, and it requires significant effort to think straight; I talk to a therapist and am consulting her about things to do to deal with this, but I need immediate advice and reassurance. As I write this, I am trying not to cry, and I should be in bed because I have class tomorrow, but I can't sleep.

That's just wrong!

How common is it for young people to conceal (weapons and drugs) and steal? I know stealing and concealing drugs/weapons are kind of different subjects, but what they both have in common...if they get caught other people (innocent) can get in trouble too. Guilty by association.

Within the last month, I found out some crazy things about a few of the people I hang out with.

-I gave a couple a friends a ride down to the bar. Little did I know that the person sitting behind me was drinking from a flask. It is illegal in my area to drink alcoholic beverages in a moving car. Fortunately another friend "told" on her.
-There are rumors that some more people sneaked in flasks at an overnight service project.
-One of my friends discovered that some people sneaked pot in his car.
-A couple people, mostly the guys, carry knives and sometimes guns to everyday places, such as malls and parks.
-Two people admitted to shoplifting.
-One friend caught another friend stealing at her house.

Now, not all of these people are close friends, thank God, but I do hang out with them on semi-regular basis. And I have been hanging out with them for a while. I was just unaware of their "deviant activities" until recently.

Am I just associating with a rough crowd? Or, am I naive and it is quite common for young people (20-28) to do those sort of things?

What you trying to say to me?

There's a song clip that plays on Arrested Development whenever George Michael gets into a sexy predicament. Is it an actual full-length song, or was it written just for the show? It's a great little piece of funk, and I'd love to find the full version if it exists. The lyrics go "what you trying to say to me?" and Google has been no help. If you've got access to Arrested Development episodes and you're not sure what I'm talking about, it appears at the end of the pilot episode and episode 2x16, "Meet the Veals."

Why did Arrested Development get cancelled? It's just so damn good. I'd love to hear some opinions as to why it failed. Or see any good blogposts or articles.

Arrested Development based gift desired. Where can I buy Lindsay's "Slut" T-shirt for a friend with a good sense of humor? Pictured here on the right

I live in NYC if that helps and would prefer to get it or at least have it en route by this weekend. Thanks

Friend: Do I report my boyfriend to HR?

For a friend: "My boyfriend and I work for the same company. After a couple of years, we are becoming very serious. I work in human resources. He works elsewhere in the building. As part of building our total trust in each other, he told me that he was once arrested for a non-violent, non-drug crime and jailed for a few days. Do I report him?" She continues,

"It was a case of bad life events mixed with bad company and youthful spirits. He pled guilty, did some community service and probation, and has been a straight arrow ever since. This was 20 years ago. I know all his details to be true with absolute certainty. He is totally and inarguably a good person and a good citizen and hasn't so much as stolen a grape in a grocery store—except, he lied on his application for his current job because he didn't think it mattered any more. Now that I know about the arrest and the conviction, I am obligated by my job to report him.

"No matter what, I think he's the one for me. I do prize the relationship more than my job. The way I see it, I have these options:

1. Report him with his knowledge. Hope he's not fired. Deal with it if he is.
2. Report him without his knowledge. Hope he's not fired and doesn't break up with me. Deal with either if they happen.
3. Quit my job so I don't have to report him. It's a good job, though.
4. Have him quit his job so I don't have to report him. It's a good job, though."

From Mo: I normally don't believe in posting questions for a friend (get an account!) but this one's a peach of a dilemma. I've cleaned up her question and paraphrased. What would you do in her shoes?
