How can I do a background check on someone? (arrest & conviction record)

I run a nonprofit and believe there is a need to learn the arrest and conviction record of one of our volunteers, including misdemeanors that occurred in another state. So, I'm trying to learn how to do an inexpensive background check on him. There are number of online services and I'd like to know which one is the best or if there's a better way. [more inside]

I'd arrest you if you were five feet closer!

I made it through law school without taking crim pro, I only crammed what I needed of crim pro for the bar exam, and my practice has nothing to do with criminal law. So, esteemed colleagues at the bar, can you tell me how jurisdictional lines affect police procedure at the state/local level? [more inside]

Got arrested over RMV negligence, can I sue?

Hi MeFi, This past Friday I was pulled over by Brookline PD for speeding (doing 42 at 35) -- they told me my license was suspended and immediately put the cuffs on me and took me in. I told them this has to be a mistake, but they didn't want to listen. My license was briefly suspended in November when I was laid off from my job and was unable to pay for one of my tickets. I rectified this once I got my first unemployment check and have proof of payments via my bank statement. When I went to the RMV to get my license reinstated, they charged me $140 and told me I was all set. This very same day I bought my auto insurance via Progressive and we all know you cant buy insurance unless your license is valid. The cops at Brookline PD are saying my RMV record shows nothing about my license being reinstated and they believe that someone at the RMV made a clerical error and did not do their job properly. My questions are as follows; - Can I sue this RMV branch for negligence? - How can I get this stupid shit off my record? They took my photo and all. I don't want this lingering on my record! I've never been arrested before. [more inside]

How to study in Canada with an arrest on your record?

My partner and I are moving to Canada to get our PhDs and so we have to apply for study permits (we're US citizens). The application asks if you've been arrested, and my partner has been once. How do we explain the arrest on the application, how do we ensure his study permit isn't denied because of this? Is there anything special we should include? [more inside]

I don't know how to help him or myself

My boyfriend of 8 years just had what looks very much like a manic episode. It involved him doing incredibly stupid, dangerous stuff with alcohol that got him arrested. He's out of jail now, he's in touch with a lawyer... So, the legal stuff is as settled as it can be right now. But now we're dealing with much larger psychological issues, and I am desperate for advice. [more inside]

Tenant Arrest Warrant

I'm a landlord and yesterday the violent crimes unit came by with a felony arrest warrant for one of my tenants, who wasn't home. They left me their card and asked me to call them when she was at home so they could come get her. My trouble is, I left a note on her door asking her to call the cops, which apparently she got, and apparently she did, though I haven't seen her at home any time recently. Have I just obstructed justice by trying to be fair to my (in my estimation) good tenant?
