Tell me what to call this topic I'm interested in, so that I know how to research it. It's somewhere within architecture and/or engineering.

this thread; has anyone every hired an architect? How do you do it? What sorts of things should I be looking for? How do I go about finding one that specializes in "weird". (By weird I mean, not your standard mcmansion floor plan.) What do architects charge to design a building. And do they oversee the building process as a rule, or no?

I'm trying to track down two stories about recent urban planning history in San Francisco: 1) making sure plazas stay sunny at lunchtime, 2) making sure small builders could help redevelop a large area. Do you know these stories? Do you know of good online sources for San Francisco urban planning history?

I don't know much about architecture, except that I really enjoying time looking at good examples of it - and will go see places just for that.
Where can I find free or low cost classes to learn more about architecture? (Second choice would be a good online resources). I'm not only looking for classes (which I can do via google), but people's experiences with them I am in DC. Transit accessibility is more or less a necessity.

I'm compiling a list of architecture sites/blogs/magazines to promote the architecture firm I'm working for. The firm does idiosyncratic, residential work that is a modern take on generic residential vernacular (their houses look a bit like Atelier Bow-Wow's residential design). What publications and blogs should I get in touch with?

I remember reading somewhere a quote, perhaps from a famous architect or designer, which described how most of the designer's work is striving to achieve a certain elusive and trascendent "quality", being a designer myself I found it very inspirational but, in zen-like fashion, I forgot about the exact wording of it, and whose it was.

I'm from Chicagoland. Me and my Canadian gal are soon moving from Toronto to the City of Big Shoulders so she can go to grad school there, and she's been asking me all kinds of questions about the character of the city. Though I consider myself a Chicagoan, I am embarrassingly tongue-tied. Please give me your insights on the character and atmosphere of the jewel of the Midwest!

I have a B. Arch. degree from outside the US. I am currently working in the US "california" and would like to start working on my licensing procedure. And it seems the first step is to "convert" my degree and let it be accepted as an accredited degree. where do I start? Is there special agencies that do that? How much is it going to cost me? I will need any possible advice in this matter especially if you had to go through this same process.

Where to elope? The SO and I would like to elope in January, but we haven't found a place that suits us. A Justice of the Peace/city hall-type wedding would suit us well, but if possible, we'd like that municipal building to be a wonderful, old, beautiful (or new and funky) building in an interesting country/city/area that we could spend some time exploring.
