How to compose transfer essay for college admissions?

I just began my application for certain UCs and CSUs (hoping to matriculate Fall 2015). In particular I'm concerned about my essays. What resources do I have to help me revise the essays before I submit them? Are there any topics I should be sure to cover/avoid? [more inside]

Job Search Woes: Online Application Edition

I am just a couple weeks from receiving my bachelor's degree, and thanks to my college career counselor I feel like I now know what I'm doing when it comes to resumes, cover letters, and the interview process. I'm applying for an administrative/HR position, and the company's online application has be concerned that I don't look like as good a candidate. Should I mail the resume/cover letter in, or deliver it personally, and ignore the online app? [more inside]

Service or application to publicly visualize and analyze survey data?

I'm looking for a service or application that will make it easy for me to allow anyone to browse, analyze, and visualize the results of several large surveys (hundreds of questions, thousands of responses). Nothing overly complex – I'd just like people to be able to do some basic cross-tabulation and analysis of the survey responses. [more inside]

Help me find two subjects I can write on for a job application.

I am submitting an application for a graphic design position and they are asking for design portfolios and two pieces of writing. I have no writing to give them. What the hell do I write about? I don't want to put a ton of time into researching topics so I can write about them but, seriously, I got nothing. I am a good writer with no outlet. Help!

As an hourly contractor, what tasks should I charge for?

I'm an independent developer. I work from home, and I charge most of my clients by the hour. Often, a project will require the computer to do something while I twiddle my thumbs; for instance, downloading, uploading, running, or compiling a lot of code. I'm divided as to whether to charge for this. [more inside]

How should I describe Metafilter as an activity?

I'm about to be filling out an application that asks for my extracurricular activities, and during a conversation with an advisor, in which I mentioned my involvement in Metafilter, I was encouraged to include my participation here in my list (particularly because of the IRL aspects of it: monthly board game meetups at my home, arranging meetups when I travel to new places, participation in Secret Quonsar swap, etc.). I'm not sure yet if I do want to include MeFi on that list, but I'd like an idea of how to describe it for this purpose to people who probably have no idea what Metafilter is. How would you describe MeFi in this context? [more inside]

Help me find an app developer

When I post ads to places like Craigslist or Odesk, I get responses from people who have hotel management experience but no reference to software, computers or anything related. Or, from seemingly highly qualified people in India. I would like to be close enough to meet the person I'm paying maybe thousands of dollars for this. I know face to face is no guarantee of honesty, but it feels better than anonymous. [more inside]

Throttle Application bandwidth by Process, not by port or host

I'm using Bitcasa to back up things, but it doesn't have builtin bandwidth upload throttling. So consequently it sucks up all the bandwidth and the entire houses network comes to a stop. This also happens to make browsing the web impossible. This would be easy to do if Bitcasa used a nonstandard port, but it uses 433 to upload to Amazon's EC. I have other applications that also need full bandwidth to EC (intermittently), so throttling those domains won't work either. What I really need is an application specific throttling App . Help? (OS X ML).

Discretion in job applications

I would like to send out job applications to companies that are close to my own company. For example one company is located in the same building as my current employer and everyone eats lunch in the same canteen. I would also like to apply to companies that are working on joint projects with my company -- where I am one of the representatives of my current company in the project/collaboration. Two questions: should I explicitly ask for discretion? Or is that a given and/or kind of shady sounding? Also, is it bad form to apply to the companies that are working with us where I am a team-member?
