Normally I’d solve this by myself, but a severe bout of depression is making it impossible for me to think clearly. I’m so overwhelmed I’m barely keeping myself from bursting into tears at work. I’m basically asking AskMe to proofread my plan, point out vital information I’m missing, and let me know if there’s anything else I haven’t considered. Please keep your responses simple--providing links to websites with directions is fine, so long as you're sure that those instructions are RIGHT. Details inside. [more inside]
I'm trying to start learning iOS having a CS background but minimal exposure to iOS environments and apple products in general. I'm debating about whether to purchase an imac or macbook pro. [more inside]
Need to replace my laptop at short notice. Should I blow my bank account and get a MacBook Air, or pick up a Chromebook (or the like) as a stopgap measure while continuing to save up for the Pro I really want? [more inside]
I recently installed IOS 8 on my iPhone. Unlike some, I had no trouble with the download per se. However, none of the new features seem to be present; and while it says on the software update page that it has been downloaded, the little 'number 1' is still showing up on the settings page. FWIW, the iCloud backup button (with the option to turn it on or off) seems 'frozen' as well. Might anyone have any ideas?
My laptop died. Boo. I got a new iPad Air. Yay, I guess. How should I set up my privacy, security, and general user preferences? [more inside]
My Honda Civic is quirky when it comes to playing and controlling an iPod for music or podcasts. I need a method to play lengthy podcasts over my stereo AND to retain the ability to fast-forward and rewind within those podcasts. I have many ways to stream or connect to play audio, but the only way I've found that allows me to fast-forward or rewind is also the one that apparently falls prey to a "known issue", causing me to get a random stereo "crash". Here's the YouTube version of the video. I tried Google, Shazam, and Audentifi without any results. Does anyone know what the song or artist is? I understand it may be from an audio library or custom made for this video, but I thought I'd see if anyone can identify it.
My trusty macbook is beginning to show its age and so I am considering upgrading to an iMac. Should I just go out and get one now, or should I wait for the next upgrade? [more inside]
My current Android phone is dying, and I've had bad luck with other Android phones. Money is real tight right now, but I'm thinking about buying this used Apple iPhone 4 for $95. Will I regret the purchase? [more inside]
I got a new job (cool!) but have to turn in my MacBook Air from old job (oh well). Since I also used as my primary laptop for personal stuff, like banking and Facebook, it also has a ton of personal data on it. (I plan to buy my own laptop for next job. And no, I did not look at naughty stuff on it -- I do have a tablet.) The company wants the programs already installed left on the computer, which is reasonable -- so leave Photoshop and Word installed -- but I want to clear off any personal data. Is there a good way to scrub an Apple computer while leaving programs behind? Right now you could go to Twitter on my browser and log into my personal account without a problem. (I realize I can just Clear History on browsers, but also looking for deeper scrub, such as WiFi passwords and stuff on keychains).
I am running OS X 10.8 on a mid 2007 MBP. Yesterday I noticed my laptop was running very hot, the screen was off and it wasn't responsive to the mouse/keyboard. I manually rebooted, and now I am unable to boot into OS X. [more inside]
With all of the technology and information at our fingertips, I am having finding the best way to watch movies. There are no longer any video stores near me. I have amazon prime, HBOgo and Netflix & my cable company on demand. It seems like every time that I want to see a movie it is not on Netflix or HBOgo, but is on Prime. [more inside]
I'm a grad student/translator who's debating picking up an iPad mini. Help me decide if it's worth it when I already have a bunch of other tech. [more inside]
I'd like an iPad. What's the optimal time to try to get one of last generation's iPads, new or refurbished? How long will retailers carry them after the product line is refreshed? [more inside]
Looking for a classy leather case for my new iPad mini with Retina display. Apple's Smart Cover is proving to be fairly flimsy and cheap. I'm looking at the StilGut Couverture leather case and Apple's own Smart Case - any other cases I should be thinking about?
I bought my very first mac yesterday - an iMac. Very excited!!!! I went through the start up screens where it offered to automagically transfer my files from my 5 year old sony vaio laptop, sitting in the same room. I am normally skeptical but decided to exercise blind faith and let it do it's thing. When it starting the transferring/migrating sequence, it said 40 hours left. Should I have done something different/better and why didn't it warn me? [more inside]

So I have two Apple Express routers, one 1st generation, the other a 2nd generation. The new one is hooked up directly to the cable modem downstairs. I'd like to use the older one to extend the network to the upstairs and back of the house, where coverage seems spotty. But the older 1st generation router doesn't seem to extend the network. It can only join thr original network. When I try to use it to extend the network, the router light goes from green to yellow or flashing yellow. Repeated restarts of this 1st gen router, forgetting the device, resetting default settings and re-configuring don't change the inability to extend the network. Any suggestions on how to get a 1st gen Apple Express router to extend the network generated by a 2nd Gen Apple Express router?
I want to make a beet slaw for adding to lettuce-based salad. The thing is, I'm unlikely to eat it all immediately, so I want to make a bunch, put it in a jar in the fridge and consume it over a period of weeks. I want to do this without dying of food poisoning, mold eating, or fermented beet alcohol poisoning. [more inside]
I used to use and love an iOS app called GroupShot that helped you magically combine the good parts of multiple photos into one to help fix issues like when people don't smile or accidentally blink or when they aren't all looking at the camera at the same time. The app no longer works right and I can't find any others like it! Anyone know of any other apps out there that do that? [more inside]
I hate my awful, auto-dialing, MotoX android with a passion and am counting the days until the introduction and release of iPhone6 in September. Help me come up with a strategy to get one of the early models and not have to wait months until there is a significant amount of product for general distribution. In other words I want to actually have an iPhone 6 in my hands in September. How do I do it?
Not one but two Macs refuse to boot, getting stuck on the grey Apple logo screen. What can I do and what could have possibly caused this?? [more inside]
My Mac Air manifested damage within 6 weeks of purchase, but Apple refuses to take any responsibility (damage isn’t covered under warranty), insisting I caused it. My credit card doesn’t offer insurance. The only option they’ve given me is to pay $500+ to have it fixed. If you were me, what would you do? [more inside]
Just wondering if I should be doing more to protect my Apple Products for viruses and malware, etc. Should I be more proactive? [more inside]
I'm fed up with Windows and want my next computer to be a Mac—but the product landscape has changed a lot since the last time I seriously considered it. Is an iMac really a competitive machine for someone doing heavy graphics and video work? [more inside]
So I'm trying to decide whether I'd prefer to send MP3s I dictate into a digital voice recorder to an overseas personal assistant to be transcribed or if there's some way to do so with technology. Even if it wasn't 100% exact I could still clean up the files later. So the question is: is there a way to do this? I have the latest version of Dragon Dictate for Mac and the files are digital. Is this possible?
My wife's iPhone 5 seems to have a hardware failure. I'm going to try taking it to the Apple Store tonight, anticipating they'll have to send it in for repairs. It's out-of-warranty, so we'll likely have to pay for the repair. The question I have: is there a loaner program? She needs something while it's out. I know they had one for a defect--is it available for all repairs?
I've got an old Verizon iPhone I would dearly love to keep as long as possible, because once I give it up for a newer one I lose my unlimited data plan. (Grumble! Rant!). [more inside]
I'd really like to give someone an iTunes gift voucher. Problem: I'm in the UK and they're in the US, and my googling so far says it can't be done cross-border. Is there a workaround I'm missing?
I'm in a good position; I'm being pursued by two big tech companies for a public policy/government relations/privacy role, at a regional (ie multi-country) manager level. One is an established giant, the other is a hot, extremely well-funded and rapidly expanding startup. But which to choose? Hope me, MeFites! [more inside]
The OS X GUI—but only the GUI—has stopped accepting my password. Any password. [more inside]
I'm getting frequent alerts on my iPhone that my free 5gb of iCloud storage is full. Most of this is from years of photos on my phone--in fact, that's pretty much the only thing on my phone I would care about having backed up. I also think most/all of the images on my phone are already backed up to my computer in Lightroom. Is there a convenient/automatic way to handle what photos stay on my phone and what photos are backed up to iCloud? [more inside]
A while ago I was gifted a few shares of AAPL stock. They were – and still are – on paper certificates. I don't have a brokerage or anything. Today that stock split 7-for-1. Do I need to do anything now? You can assume I know pretty much nothing about this stuff. Thank you!
Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.

For online purchases delivered to an Apple Store for in-store pickup, does Apple's 14-day 'buyer's remorse' return period begin 1) at the order date, 2) at the date the item becomes available in-store, or 3) at the date of actual pickup? I'm somehow failing to get a clear answer through internet searches. [more inside]
My Applecare for my Macbook Pro will expire in a month. I haven't used it for anything save a replacement charger, but I'm wondering whether there are any diagnostic tests or lists of common problems I can check against to see whether there are any repairs I should ask for. It's totally fine if the answer is a simple "no" - I understand for hardware, if it doesn't fail right out of the box or in the first few uses, it's probably fine. I just want to double check!
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro, 15", a1286. recently, when i turn on the computer the wifi works for maybe one minute, then even though the airport signal stays strong, i can't connect to anything. I ordered a used wifi card off of ebay, and the same thing happens. so i'm guessing it's not the wifi card, but the flex cable, the antenna, a software bug, or (worst of all worlds) the logic board itself. I ordered a new flex cable, and i hope that fixes the issue. If it doesn't, has anyone else had this problem before, and would recommend anything? If it's not the cable i really hope it's a software bug. I'd hate to replace the logic board, otherwise known as "buying a new computer"
I am looking for suggestions on a full-sized, wireless keyboard (Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth) that would be a worthy replacement for my old, disgusting White Extended Apple Wireless Keyboard. [more inside]
I went to get my 16GB iPhone 5 repaired or replaced under the iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program today, and after some testing and such I was issued a loaner phone (also a 16GB iPhone 5) and told that mine will be repaired in about 6-8 days. I think I'd like to just keep the loaner, and it seems like that may not be encouraged but may be possible... [more inside]

My mother has an early-2010 Mac Mini. Apple says she can upgrade to 10.9.2 for free, but she's not sure if it's a good idea, so she asked me. Her model is on the official compatibility list, but is it a good idea to upgrade? Is there likely to be a noticeable performance hit, or stability issues? Have you personally had a good experience with OSX Mavericks on older Intel macs?
