I'm considering buying a used hackintosh. I'll have the opportunity to test the system briefly before making my decision, and I was wondering what I could do to look for potential issues [more inside]
We have a network with a Time Capsule which used to act as a router but now seems to be stuck in bridge mode, allowing internet access to only one device (out of four). [more inside]
My Macbook Air (2012 model) has a bad hard drive, I think. Should I try to take it to Apple for maintenance, or a third-party? [more inside]
I haven't had an Apple product in years, but I'm thinking of buying a tablet for entertainment on some long flights I have coming up. [more inside]
Finally spilled coffee on my 6-year-old MacBook Pro, borking the keyboard. It still boots up seemingly fine, but the hard drive is encrypted with a 40+ character password and I can't enter the password due to borked keyboard. I tried booting it up with a USB PC keyboard attached, but the laptop didn't recognize it. The problem is not the USB, since it will recognize a USB mouse. Is there a way to bring up an onscreen keyboard? Or another solution I'm not seeing?
We have a Macbook Air running Sierra 10.12, upgraded within the last 10 weeks or so. Since then we can't keep free space on the hard drive. It just continually disappears, to the point where the drive is almost full and the computer stops functioning properly. I can't find the source of the problem, except that the space used by "System" files is just growing and growing -- today it's at 150GB! Are there any serious Mac experts out there who can help me? I have an iMac from 2012 that is starting to show signs of age, notably when playing games and when browsing with multiple tabs. Would upping the memory from 8GB to 32GB (the max this machine can take) help enough to be worth the $200 price tag, or should I save my money for an upgrade? Specifically interested in people who have done this with a Mac and how much real difference you saw. [more inside]
I have an iMac where the internal USB controller has gone flakey. It corrupts photos from SD cards, and just recently seems to have messed up my backup drive (also USB). The repair place is suggesting it will cost $800 to replace the logic board (parts + labor). Since everything else works well, I'd like to salvage the machine. [more inside]
I didn't ask it to, but my iPhone lately keeps trying to download more music to its library. Any clues? [more inside]
I want a tablet for reading comics, occasional word processing, and faffing around on the internet. I prioritise screen quality, good input, longevity and low cost. I am not hugely fond of the Apple ecosystem. What do you recommend? [more inside]
When I was a kid, I read this great young-adult book that had a ghost story set in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Does anyone else remember this? [more inside]
My wired Apple Keyboard keeps shocking me whenever I depress a key for too long (aka any time I type) to the point that I have little sore spots on all my fingertips. The shocks are strong enough that I can hear them through my headphones as soon as the arc makes contact with my fingers. What is going on, and why isn't the issue resolved by grounding myself? [more inside]
I have a newish iMac and three external hard drives of varying age and corresponding capacity (500 GB, 2 TB, 4 TB). I have ca. 2 TB of music divided between the latter two. What is the best way of backing this up? [more inside]
When I got my iPhone, it came with a Lightning charger cable that went almost a year before I had to hold it at a certain angle in order to keep my iPhone charging. I have bought various replacements on eBay that appeared to be genuine, but got the same problem MUCH quicker with these. Is there anywhere I can get an actual genuine cable that will last, without paying a fortune? [more inside]

We just got a 12-inch iPad pro. I want a case that will be compatible with the Apple smart keyboard -- but I'm not crazy about spending $80 for the Apple-branded silicone case on top of the cost of the keyboard and the iPad. Can anybody recommend a third-party case that will protect my iPad, work with the smart keyboard, and not bankrupt me?

So, my parents have decided to join the rest of us here in the 21st Century and get Internet access and an iPad. As the free technical support of the family, it's fallen on me to get the device up and running and to keep it running. Difficulty level: they do not own a computer. Help me think this through from all angles so I'm not getting daily calls for assistance. [more inside]
I am in the market for a new desktop, and would like an iMac. Wondering if there are other options (read more inside if interested). [more inside]
I need an alternative to iTunes. I just want my music to be sorted by artist, album and song, make playlists and get all of that onto my iPod. I have Windows 10 and my iPod is an older one, appears to be version 2.0.5. I'm willing to pay for this. Please don't suggest Media Monkey, I couldn't figure how to work it and I think it was way too much for my needs.
I bought an external battery (20800 mAh) for my oldish Macbook Air. But there is one thing I didn't think of: How do I plug my Macbook into an external battery that only has USB outputs?
Ok, so I posted this question a while back. I got some great responses and insight, however, I still haven't decided if I should purchase an Apple TV. [more inside]

I have a new Macbook Pro 13" that I purchased two weeks ago from the Apple store. It has had two minor (but possibly signs of something bigger?) issues so far, and today is the last day I can exchange it for another one. Would you exchange it in my position? See inside for the issues. [more inside]
I like to listen to albums and playlists from my music collection on my iPhone. I don't need a streaming service, or radio, or recommendations, or social networks. I just want a simple user interface that lets me pick out an album (or maybe a playlist) and listen to it. Does such a thing exist for iOS? The built-in music app has gotten way too complicated, and does not work well for me or my family. [more inside]
My wife is interested in buying an off-contract new iphone and switching to MVNO service but I have questions about compatibility of the two different models. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
So, I am finally giving up my last personal connection to Microsoft, my home PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, and switching to a really gorgeous iMac. Everything else in my life -- phone, tablet, watch, and laptop -- are already Apple. What preparations should I engage in while waiting for the new iMac to be delivered? And what do you recommend for smoothly getting my data (photos, documents, Quicken file, etc.) from my PC to my new Mac? And is there anything else you would advise I do as I make the transition? Many thanks.
Should I get a 27" Retina 5K iMac, or a MacBook Pro plus a 4K monitor? [more inside]
Husband just dumped a glass of water over the keyboard of his MacBook Air. It immediately shut itself off/ went dead. There is water dripping dripping out of the ports on the right side. What do we do?
I can't remember much about it but I'm trying to remember the name of a Classic Mac-era program that let you create animations in the black-and-white style of Dark Castle. It came with a demo that scrolled and had funny stuff happening in it.
I want to send and iPad to my grandparents for FaceTime and email. They are not tech savvy, and I want to make this as easy for them to use as possible. They don't have internet access, so I will be adding them to my family AT&T plan. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
My old laptop died, and I purchased a new laptop. I was able to recover the purchased songs from my itunes account, and they show up on my new laptop in my itunes library. However, my ipod won't load songs from my itunes library. It will only load the songs I have imported by cd, not the purchases from itunes. Can you help me? [more inside]
Just wondering if I should get a streaming media player, such as Apple TV or Roku? [more inside]
Fairly gnarly Mac debugging / troubleshooting question, concerning an app that crashes on launch consistently, but only when run by a single particular user. So far, it's stumped everyone. Lots of gory technical details inside. [more inside]
I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite. Everything seems to be fine, except for the fact that my iPhones text messages now happen on my computer (I think this is the continuity feature?). Anyway, I want this to stop. Of course, I Googled it before I posted, here, but the fixes that I found, don't appear to be relevant (they were from 2014 and probably from Mavericks). For example, one fix suggested opening the Messages app on your Mac (which I did) and open the Preferences menu, which I don't see. Can anyone help me stop this?? Thanks!
So this is a weird one - on occasion, my own computer loses connection to my WiFi signal - whereas my roommate, who sometimes is logged on to the same network via the same signal and sometimes IN THE SAME ROOM - does NOT. Please suggest where I should look to start diagnosing the problem. [more inside]
I know I want a Mac and not a PC. I'm fairly sure I want a MacBook Pro and not an Air. Help? [more inside]
Fixing some information in a scanned document. Screen shows a perfect seamless page but when printed the blocks I changed show up lighter. Is there some way I can fix this?
Help me get organized in 2015. I’d like to mount an iPad 2 tablet on a kitchen cabinet, just above the main counter that I use for cooking. The tablet will be used to access recipes and to stream music into the kitchen. [more inside]

My iPad 3 (the first retina) running iOS 8.1 will drop the wi-fi connection fairly regularly. This often happens when streaming video via BBC iPlayer or YouTube apps. Any suggestions on how to fix it? [more inside]
First, this is not a gigantic deal. I have all my data backed up via CrashPlan, I do most of my computing on a MBP Retina that's about 6 months old, and I've hardly used the Mini at all in that time. My question is what I can best do with the doorstop my Mac Mini now is. [more inside]
Normally I’d solve this by myself, but a severe bout of depression is making it impossible for me to think clearly. I’m so overwhelmed I’m barely keeping myself from bursting into tears at work. I’m basically asking AskMe to proofread my plan, point out vital information I’m missing, and let me know if there’s anything else I haven’t considered. Please keep your responses simple--providing links to websites with directions is fine, so long as you're sure that those instructions are RIGHT. Details inside. [more inside]
My current Android phone is dying, and I've had bad luck with other Android phones. Money is real tight right now, but I'm thinking about buying this used Apple iPhone 4 for $95. Will I regret the purchase? [more inside]
I got a new job (cool!) but have to turn in my MacBook Air from old job (oh well). Since I also used as my primary laptop for personal stuff, like banking and Facebook, it also has a ton of personal data on it. (I plan to buy my own laptop for next job. And no, I did not look at naughty stuff on it -- I do have a tablet.) The company wants the programs already installed left on the computer, which is reasonable -- so leave Photoshop and Word installed -- but I want to clear off any personal data. Is there a good way to scrub an Apple computer while leaving programs behind? Right now you could go to Twitter on my browser and log into my personal account without a problem. (I realize I can just Clear History on browsers, but also looking for deeper scrub, such as WiFi passwords and stuff on keychains).
I bought my very first mac yesterday - an iMac. Very excited!!!! I went through the start up screens where it offered to automagically transfer my files from my 5 year old sony vaio laptop, sitting in the same room. I am normally skeptical but decided to exercise blind faith and let it do it's thing. When it starting the transferring/migrating sequence, it said 40 hours left. Should I have done something different/better and why didn't it warn me? [more inside]
