I have a no-contract plan at Virgin Mobile USA, which I like because it is so cheap ($35/month for unlimited data and enough calling). The downside of cheap and no-contract is expensive phones. However, I just lost my Android phone and would like to switch back to iPhone. My options at Virgin are iPhone 4, for $200, iPhone 4s, for $314, or iPhone 5, for more than I want to pay really. How to decide? [more inside]

I have an Airport Express base station - the older one not new (around 2009) version. Recently got a new iMac with with latest version of OSx and no longer see the the option under the sound button (top right corner of screen) to choose to either play with local speakers or speakers (or both) associated Airport Express base. When I go to settings - sound - output, I can see the the local speakers and the Airport Express but it says the selected device (Express) has no output controls. It used to be an option with any playback on any application. How to remedy? I can use my iphone (using iOS 6 not 7) to play on the airport express speakers. The only thing that seems to pickup the base is Itunes but other programs are not picking it up and I use Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.. If I manually go in under the settings - sound - output I can click on Airport Express and it will play but not both sets of speakers. We like whole house music.

In spring of 2014 I will be getting an iPhone 5S. I cannot figure out how to get a plan that includes tethering so I can generate wifi for my non-cellular iPad mini. What will I need to do to activate that during my order (I am switching from Verizon to AT&T) and how do I find out how much it will cost in addition to my unlimited talk/text plus XGB of data? I have already contacted customer support and they have given me the same unhelpful stuff that's on the AT&T website.

I have an iphone 4GS, latest iOS. iMessage is now working, on my own apple account (email@example.com). Have sim with texts and data included.
Husband has my old iPhone 3GS, updated software, iMessage will not work. Is on another apple account (firstname.lastname@example.org). Has sim with texts and data included, same network as mine.
Bought my son an iPod touch 4th gen, iMessage will not work. On his own apple account (email@example.com) [more inside]

I have an ATV2. It asks me to turn on home sharing. I do. ATV insists that i turn on home sharing. It worked in my previous location excepting a few times, where I just unplugged the router and ATV and replugged back in. It worked here on initial setup the first try but a few days later this whole stuff happens. It worked again only after I did a complete factory reset. I have read many of the threads online and perhaps it is a bit of daftness on my part. This previous thread on mefi
helped the gentleman with his question. I didn't actually understand it very well. I have an iMac running Snow Leopard. The ATV does connect
to Netflix and all other things. Just not my computer. [more inside]

I took a bunch of photos with my iPhone held horizontally, which when imported into iPhoto are now upside down. Last time I did this, and I rotated the photos in iPhoto, the photos then appear upside down when viewing them on the iPhone. Is there any way to get the iPhone to agree with iPhoto on which way is up? Or do I have to create duplicate photos and rotate one so that at least one version is properly viewable on each device? (Also, does anyone have a good trick for remembering what the right position is for the camera eye when holding the iPhone sideways so I don't do this again?)

My early-2007 Macbook Pro is still going strong, besides the fact that it gets very hot and that the battery is kaput. The biggest problem I have with it is that the OS (v.10.5.8) is far enough out of date that I can't update most of my software, and have a hard time acquiring new software. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or would I be better of just springing for a new mac? [more inside]

This morning I heard a story on NPR that the first ever Apple desktop computer is being auctioned at $600,000ish! I own a PB540c, the first laptop Apple ever made (yes I'm that old and yes I've been an Apple supporter that long). I keep dragging the dang thing around with me, mostly for nostalgic reasons, I think.
So now I'm facing yet another move, and was cleaning out my office. I looked at that old laptop and wondered: should I take it with me again? Maybe it will be worth something one day?
Truthfully, I'm a minimalist and don't like a lot of "stuff." But somehow I can't seem to part with this useless piece of grey plastic and funky old computer parts. Do you think Apple's PB540c will ever have any value, or should I just chuck it alright already? And get over it.

My old (10+ years) Apple PowerBook G4 won't shut down properly. When I click the apple icon and then click 'shut down' and 'shut down now' (or rather their Dutch-language equivalents), it will remove all icons and other elements from the desktop except the desktop background, and it will darken the background, but it won't shut down. Eventually the screen goes black, but something (a fan?) keeps audibly running. It won't start up in this state. If I unplug it, wait until every activity has died down and the computer doesn't make any sound anymore, plug it back in and wait until the battery has fully loaded again, it will start up as usual. I wrote a polite email to an App seller advising him I would be posting a 1-star review of his app on Apple's App Store. He replied, "Electronic postings of defamation, libel and slander are now well covered under English and European law. My litigation solicitors are [redacted] of London, who have looked after my interests for over twenty years now, nor have ever lost me a case, from individuals to a nation-state. Put up any post and it'll cost you several thousand pounds for each day it stays up; I do hope I make clear..."
Can he do this, can I reliably protect myself, and has he violated any Terms and Conditions as a seller on the App Store? Specific reference to English and European Law and Apple App Store Terms and Conditions would be very helpful. Thank you.

Greetings - I "inherited" a MacBook Pro last year. It was a Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz from Spring 2008. So it was 4 years old when I got it and I was told that the battery was dead and as long as I kept it plugged in, it worked fine, however, I would need a new one. So last year, I purchased a new battery and installed it.
However, I am still noticing that the battery life is horrible. It seems like when I am using it to type a document or check emails and surf the web, etc, I literally can watch the battery drain. I would assume that it might hold a charge of about an hour and a half maybe?
Is there any way I can "test" it to see what my actual battery life if? To ensure there isn't something else going on? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks,

Reinstalled Snow Leopard but ejected my external drive before this. Then, when done, plugged back in via USB as my usual custom....and Time Machine still shows up, but the External Seagate drive does not. I made sure that in Finder/Preferences that the external disc box as others was checked. I tried a different cord, and different port. I opened up Disc Utility and the External HD's partioned Time Machine is available but the other part, now renamed something else (a default name from manufacturer?) is greyed out and I cannot touch it.
Any thoughts? Should i now go to the boot disc of Snow Leopard? Not sure why TM shows but the rest does not.

Is there a great detailed Pro Retina for Dummies guide, or especially great website for navigating what this machine can do? And what apps or tricks or tips would be especially helpful to install or learn as I explore this machine? Many thanks, all you Mac users.

I was having trouble with my iMac computer lagging and one of the things I did was restart in Safe mode (holding down shift). It now seems to be ok. I also have mediocre vision so have resolution at 1280 x 800 as my usual preference. The Issue: since the safe boot, Chrome pages go to a white screen after a few seconds on most sites such as Facebook and Amazon among others. I see old posts on Google but no real fixes. I looked at many google help links like this
among others. Has anybody else had this problem? (Chrome does this when I change the view back to a more usual setting like 1344 x 840, for example. Any thoughts?

I have an older MacBook I use when travelling (four or five times a year), and then the odd occasion when I am away from my office desktop. The battery on the MacBook died a few months ago, and I am guessing partially because I haven't been using it frequently enough. I am hesitant to replace the battery, figuring the same thing will happen again, is that right? Is there a downside to not having a working battery on the computer itself? And lastly, is there a problem with leaving the dead battery in the computer?

My old PC laptop runs perfectly as do any tablets on my apt public wi-fi. The iMac computer (Snow Leopard), slows to a halt and won't get to pages after a few times. I have done several things such as reset PRAM, gone to /Library/Preferences and moved all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash, and restarted Mac...The second bit helped for a week and now it is doing it again, no matter what browser. MacKeeper says the computer is alright, and airport utility just tells me I am connected to the internet. (I've done the reconnecting and assistant and diagnostics but nada...) I cannot figure this out and I have scoured the net. If somebody was downloading a ton on it, I would at least understand but any other devices work fine. My husband wants throw it out the window. Any ideas?

I am writing some documentation for an app that runs on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. I need a consistant way to refer to these devices and am looking for something better than "iPhone/iPod/iPad". For example:
"Hold your iPhone/iPod/iPad's camera so that the QR code is centered in the brackets."
I've come up with either
"... iPhone/iPod/iPad (referred to as iPhone from here on)"
Anyone have a better idea?
