After 10 years almost exclusively using Apple products we are thinking about moving back to a PC environment but are weighing up how to and if it is worth the drama. [more inside]
I use a 2006 Mac Pro. It's so old that I'm stuck with OS X 10.6.8 and lots of apps (even Firefox!) won't update any more. If I buy a second-hand Mac, am I at risk of (say) 2009 Macs falling out of OS support life while 2013 Macs are still supported, or is the architecture effectively identical from the OS' perspective? So I've got a macbook air. There is NOT a ton of room left on it. But somehow a bunch (like 25-30) photos I took were deleted. I'm still not sure how. And I want to restore JUST those photos. But as I understand it, I need to restore the entire library. And I don't have enough room for TWO libraries on this computer. So is it possible to just go back, look for the photos I want, and restore JUST those? If so...how? Latest mac OSX.
I will be reinstalling mac OSX Yosemite because of constant problems with it but I am looking to retain the folders that have been previosuly created to organise my mails. I am using Outlook 2011 as my mail client. Does using: File - Export - selecting outlook for mac data file (.olm), when imported back, retain the previous folder structure that I have used to organise my mails? If not could anyone suggest how I could keep the existing folder organisation? Many thanks!
I have a mid-2013 Macbook Air with 4GB of RAM. It's currently running Mavericks, and I would love to just keep it that way, but more and more software doesn't work with Mavericks. I would update, but I hear so many people who say that 4GB isn't enough and you need at least 8GB to run both Yosemite and El Capitan well and that performance is worse than on Mavericks. I rely on Apple's Spotlight search to find files on my MacBook Pro, because I am so bad at organising stuff into folders. But recently, it hasn't been working. I look for a word I know is in the file contents – like a Word doc – and it simply doesn't show up in the Spotlight results. I've tried re-indexing Spotlight but it hasn't helped. [more inside]
I have a 2006 MacBook Pro and can no longer upgrade the OS. What do I need to do to get it to run Yosemite? [more inside]
This makes no sense to me, but I have lost a super important email I just received by accidentally hitting the "K" key while it was highlighted in my Apple Mail inbox. It is my only copy of an important day-long interview for an academic job. I have tried searching Mail by sender and subject, searching my computer for same including searching content, looking in Mail's trash folder. The Finder's trash is empty. I am stumped, and worried. I really don't want to write back to say that I lost the email. Where could it be??
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]
I recently upgraded my iMac to OSX 10.9.5. Since the upgrade, my second monitor (ViewSonic VG2230wm attached through a DVI-Firewaire adapter) flashes to a black screen intermittently. I am unusually dependent on that second monitor and this problem seems perfectly designed to drive me insane. Please help me preserve what is left of my sanity. [more inside]

My mother has an early-2010 Mac Mini. Apple says she can upgrade to 10.9.2 for free, but she's not sure if it's a good idea, so she asked me. Her model is on the official compatibility list, but is it a good idea to upgrade? Is there likely to be a noticeable performance hit, or stability issues? Have you personally had a good experience with OSX Mavericks on older Intel macs?
Why is cut/copy/duplicate greyed out in Apple Preview app? When I open PDFs or XLS files in Preview by double clicking on them, I'm able to select text but cannot ever copy or cut it. Someone suggested duplicating the file first, but that option is also greyed out. 10.9.1 Why? Thanks!

I have an Apple MacBook Pro Retina display with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M I use Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac and I installed Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro with success, however windows does not recognize that I have nvidia installed in my system. My question is: How to let Parallels Desktop 9 to enable NVIDIA work in windows 8.1 pro? If it does not support it, what other tools or software to make nvidia work in windows 8.1 pro? Thank you.

My early-2007 Macbook Pro is still going strong, besides the fact that it gets very hot and that the battery is kaput. The biggest problem I have with it is that the OS (v.10.5.8) is far enough out of date that I can't update most of my software, and have a hard time acquiring new software. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or would I be better of just springing for a new mac? [more inside]
I have a late 2008 MBP, 8GB RAM, with an SSD, running Lion without problems. Should I upgrade to Mountain Lion right now? Have the battery life and other issues been resolved? I'm trying to hack together an OS X script that's dependent upon my location. Problem is, Apple's location services doesn't know where my home router is - and I don't have an iOS device to tell it. Is there any way I can suggest or hint to the server where my IP is located?

Nitpicky question: I'm not real happy with the name of the iTunes section "Audiobooks" - I'm usually using it to stash stand up albums or other stuff that isn't music. I'd like to rename it, something like "Performances." Is there a way I can tweak my (English) language files to make this happen? [more inside]

In OS X, I used Automator to create a Folder Action to synch, with Transmit, a local folder and a remote folder. It's activated when I drop a file in the local folder. I want it to be activated when I edit and save a file that is already in the local folder. That is, I want the Folder Action to watch for changes in the modification date/time of files and trigger the synch when a file's modification date or time changes. Doable?

I'm a Windows systems administrator and power user and an enthusiastic user of Unix/Linux-based operating systems. I have hand edited make files and recompiled linux kernels manually. I know how to do administrative scripting and am a Microsoft products (SharePoint, if it matters) support professional/systems engineer in my job. I am certainly not the geekiest person I know but I'm in the top 5 percent. I am switching to a Mac Mini (Lion Server, specs maxed toward storage) after decades of using Windows laptops/desktops and some Linux machines. I'm prepared for the lack of physical mobility, but I don't feel prepared for not being a power user. What methods/resources would you suggest I could use to get up to speed with being a Mac Mini and OSX Lion power user? [more inside]

I have a MacBook and an iMac and would like to keep the same iPhoto library on both machines. I'm comfortable with making sure I only change the library on one machine at a time. I've done research and it seems the only way to keep the library on both machines is to use rsync, but despite following some online guides I can't get it to work. Does anyone know of a user-friendly link that will help?

Recently aded an external drive to my iMac for storage of photo files. It runs off a Firewire 800 port. I also use a Time Capsule. The external drive is mounted overnight via crontab for the daily backup run. When that's done, a script unmounts the drive. This works reliably. The drive, then, should be unmounted the rest of the time. However, the drive is mounted at unexpected and sporadic intervals. The logs reveal that this is usually, but not always, immediately following the unmounting of the Time Capsule after an hourly run. Not on every run, but perhaps on one run per day. In addition, the external drive is sometimes mounted in a way that appears to have no association with the Time Capsule. What's going on?

I've an aging MacBook Pro, well exactly 3 years old. I've found that ever since a recent update by Apple the wifi frequently refuse some networks until the machine has been rebooted. Any fixes? Also, It appears the CD/DVD drive has now died. As I never used it, does anyone have good recommendations for repurposing the drive bay?
