I have an iMac from 2012 that is starting to show signs of age, notably when playing games and when browsing with multiple tabs. Would upping the memory from 8GB to 32GB (the max this machine can take) help enough to be worth the $200 price tag, or should I save my money for an upgrade? Specifically interested in people who have done this with a Mac and how much real difference you saw. [more inside]
I have an iMac where the internal USB controller has gone flakey. It corrupts photos from SD cards, and just recently seems to have messed up my backup drive (also USB). The repair place is suggesting it will cost $800 to replace the logic board (parts + labor). Since everything else works well, I'd like to salvage the machine. [more inside]
My wired Apple Keyboard keeps shocking me whenever I depress a key for too long (aka any time I type) to the point that I have little sore spots on all my fingertips. The shocks are strong enough that I can hear them through my headphones as soon as the arc makes contact with my fingers. What is going on, and why isn't the issue resolved by grounding myself? My spouse and I own an 27-inch iMac from 2011. Recently, the screen seemed to go briefly haywire and then black. Now, when the computer is turned on, it seems to boot fine, but nothing can be seen on the screen (the flashlight trick did not help). Is there a way to make the computer mirror itself to another monitor at startup so that we can access its contents? [more inside]
So, I am finally giving up my last personal connection to Microsoft, my home PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, and switching to a really gorgeous iMac. Everything else in my life -- phone, tablet, watch, and laptop -- are already Apple. What preparations should I engage in while waiting for the new iMac to be delivered? And what do you recommend for smoothly getting my data (photos, documents, Quicken file, etc.) from my PC to my new Mac? And is there anything else you would advise I do as I make the transition? Many thanks.
I'm trying to migrate from an old iMac to a new MacBook Pro, using Migration Assistant over wifi. It stalls out at "Less than a minute remaining." Apparently this is a common problem. Are there any workarounds - for example, backing up to an external disk and connecting that disk to the new computer? I do have Time Machine but it hasn't backed up in about 2 weeks (a different problem I've been dealing with). The old iMac has USB and Firewire ports; the new Pro has USB and Thunderbolt.
My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]
So four years ago, I wrote this love letter to Steve Jobs when he died. I admired that man, but the major thing missing was that I didn't own anything made by Apple, apart from an old generation iPod. I said, someday. Well that day has finally arrived. Any tips to make my transition easier? What other accessories/necessities should I buy? [more inside]
I recently upgraded my iMac to OSX 10.9.5. Since the upgrade, my second monitor (ViewSonic VG2230wm attached through a DVI-Firewaire adapter) flashes to a black screen intermittently. I am unusually dependent on that second monitor and this problem seems perfectly designed to drive me insane. Please help me preserve what is left of my sanity. [more inside]

I'm fed up with Windows and want my next computer to be a Mac—but the product landscape has changed a lot since the last time I seriously considered it. Is an iMac really a competitive machine for someone doing heavy graphics and video work? [more inside]
Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.
I would like to work from home and remote in to my work computer without people being able to see what I'm doing on my screen. Right now I am using iCloud's back to Mac screen sharing feature, but that is distracting my students in my computer lab and encouraging them to do mischief. I cannot install Timbuktu or other screen sharing programs at this time due to cost constraints. Is there a way to screen share or remote login wherein the target computer's screen stays off, giving me privacy to work and do what I need to do? Target computer is an iMac. Other suggestions for free but secure programs appreciated.
I have an Airport Express base station - the older one not new (around 2009) version. Recently got a new iMac with with latest version of OSx and no longer see the the option under the sound button (top right corner of screen) to choose to either play with local speakers or speakers (or both) associated Airport Express base. When I go to settings - sound - output, I can see the the local speakers and the Airport Express but it says the selected device (Express) has no output controls. It used to be an option with any playback on any application. How to remedy? I can use my iphone (using iOS 6 not 7) to play on the airport express speakers. The only thing that seems to pickup the base is Itunes but other programs are not picking it up and I use Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.. If I manually go in under the settings - sound - output I can click on Airport Express and it will play but not both sets of speakers. We like whole house music.

I have an iMac using Snow Leopard. I use my apartment public w-fi and it has worked fine up to a few months back. It started dropping wi-fi no matter where the Mac was positioned in the apartment while my PC and a few other tablets worked fine consistently (tried them at times when the Mac stopped to a several minute crawl or gave me message of no connection). Hi there, I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro, which is getting noticeably slower, the battery needs replacing and the fan is extremely noisy. All this has lead me to believe that this laptop is coming to the end of its "natural" lifespan and I will soon be due an upgrade (however I accept I may be wrong here). Coupled with this, I am about to move into a new place, meaning I will have a lot less need for a portable laptop, since I will be working from home most days. With this in mind, I was thinking about getting a desktop iMac as my "main" computer and using my old MacBook as and when I needed to. So my question is, should I... A) Attempt to prolong my MacBooks life by having it serviced / refurbished, and buy a desktop monitor to plug it into when I work from home. B) Buy a new MacBook Pro, and a desktop monitor (because this would be cheaper than the third option, which is to...) C) Buy a desktop iMac, and continue to use my old MacBook as a spare / portable option. Thanks.
Reinstalled Snow Leopard but ejected my external drive before this. Then, when done, plugged back in via USB as my usual custom....and Time Machine still shows up, but the External Seagate drive does not. I made sure that in Finder/Preferences that the external disc box as others was checked. I tried a different cord, and different port. I opened up Disc Utility and the External HD's partioned Time Machine is available but the other part, now renamed something else (a default name from manufacturer?) is greyed out and I cannot touch it. Any thoughts? Should i now go to the boot disc of Snow Leopard? Not sure why TM shows but the rest does not.

Recently aded an external drive to my iMac for storage of photo files. It runs off a Firewire 800 port. I also use a Time Capsule. The external drive is mounted overnight via crontab for the daily backup run. When that's done, a script unmounts the drive. This works reliably. The drive, then, should be unmounted the rest of the time. However, the drive is mounted at unexpected and sporadic intervals. The logs reveal that this is usually, but not always, immediately following the unmounting of the Time Capsule after an hourly run. Not on every run, but perhaps on one run per day. In addition, the external drive is sometimes mounted in a way that appears to have no association with the Time Capsule. What's going on?

Any one have experience running Ubuntu or another Linux on an aluminum iMac? (Aluminum keyboard, wireless mouse, 2.66 Core 2 Duo) What works? What doesn't? I'm not a Linux neophyte. I ran it on my desktop for about ten years, then moved to Apple after banging my head on wireless drivers. (Bought three successive cards that the "community" said worked. They didn't.) I don't mind editing scripts, but I want all my hardware to work immediately after an install or after I grab some supported packages. I'm through chasing around for unsupported code that some guy says works on his hardware. Is my Time Capsule going to be at all useful? (Posted this question on the Ubuntu forum and got only two rather unhelpful replies.)
