How can I get a new iPod, or at least a new iPod battery, for free using my still current Apple Care Plan?

iPodFilter: Some songs on my iPod are not being played until the end. I did an extensive Google search and found lots of relevant solutions, but I already did half of them and some others seem strange. I'm now looking at the things I haven't tried yet, and have some specific questions.

I have iTunes 5 installed on two machines, one at work, one at home, with my iPod set to sync automatically to the iTunes library on my home machine.
When using iTunes 4.x, I was able to attach my iPod to my work machine and then configure the iPod (in the iTunes preferences) to 'manually' update, rather than automatically, enabling me to play files directly off my iPod on my work machine. When I returned to my home machine, I would switch the home machine's iTunes/iPod settings back to 'update automatically', causing iTunes to update the files on the home machine with a new Last Played date and Play Count.
iTunes 5, however, seems to have a bug in this regard: it notes a random 10 or 15-song selection of tracks played via the work machine's iTunes 5, but that's all. A day's worth of listening to tracks isn't logged as played, messing up Smart Playlists that grab music I haven't heard in a while. 1) Is this unusual or universal 2) Any fixes?

I just managed to delete my entire iTunes library. But I have it on my iPod. Problem is, the iPod is set to auto-update, and if I plug it into a computer with no music on it, it'll all vanish. Help.

Horror of horrors, I dropped my iPod Mini face down onto a hardwood floor, and the screen is now dead. Everything else seems to be fine (audio feedback when using the scroll wheel is present, the unit plays, mounts, etc.), and the screen itself isn't cracked. Apple has told me that they would be happy to sell me another, but beyond that they don't have much else to say. What are my options? Has anyone used and been happy with a third party repair service?

In iTunes, why do songs I uncheck not play during shuffled playback? I just want to uncheck songs I don't want on the iPod and let 'em play normally in the library. It's easier than making a playlist for the iPod each time I add new albums. Alternatively, how do you manage your library when it exceeds the size of your iPod?

So. I'm looking at getting an iPod (probably the mini ... for running and stuff), and I'm overwhelmed by the accessories: what do you think are the essential accessories for using it by itself, in the car, and in the home (eg in the kitchen)?

What's the best way to save money on an iPod purchase? Rebates, interesting freebie programs, etc. ... I'm interested in it all.
On that note: Any students want to save $100 on their Mac laptop purchase? The current deal through Apple Educational is that a combo laptop/iPod purchase nets you a $200 rebate. If someone wants an iBook/Powerbook and not an iPod, we could buddy up and split the rebate. (This applies especially to local Madisonians, since shipping concerns are nullified.)

[MacWorldFilter] So, I finally decided to buy a 40 gig iPod after my
last posting. However I've now found out that
Toshiba have announced a 60 gig drive and are shipping insane numbers of them to Apple. Oh, and now it turns out that
MacWorld is happening in Boston next month.
My question is: What is the chance that Steve will announce a new iPod at this show? Do you think he will announce the same 4th Gen iPod with a bigger HD or that they'll go for a 5th Gen? If it would be launched, how long would it take to get to market in the USA (and then UK)? I understand that technology always moves on, but the last thing I want to do is buy something and then one month later it gets superceeded by something dramatically better.
