My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]

In the current MacBook Pro lineup, there's a $100 dollar price jump between the 2.9Ghz i5 processors and 3.1 Ghz i7 processors on the 128GB and 256GB models, but a $200 difference for the same upgrade on the 512GB model, all other specs remaining the same. Is there any reason for this, aside from Apple deciding that people willing to spend that much simply won't mind paying another $100?
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]
I recently upgraded my iMac to OSX 10.9.5. Since the upgrade, my second monitor (ViewSonic VG2230wm attached through a DVI-Firewaire adapter) flashes to a black screen intermittently. I am unusually dependent on that second monitor and this problem seems perfectly designed to drive me insane. Please help me preserve what is left of my sanity. [more inside]
Need to replace my laptop at short notice. Should I blow my bank account and get a MacBook Air, or pick up a Chromebook (or the like) as a stopgap measure while continuing to save up for the Pro I really want? [more inside]
My trusty macbook is beginning to show its age and so I am considering upgrading to an iMac. Should I just go out and get one now, or should I wait for the next upgrade? [more inside]
Purchasing a new iMac, looking for accessories recommendations. [more inside]
My Mac Air manifested damage within 6 weeks of purchase, but Apple refuses to take any responsibility (damage isn’t covered under warranty), insisting I caused it. My credit card doesn’t offer insurance. The only option they’ve given me is to pay $500+ to have it fixed. If you were me, what would you do? [more inside]
I'm fed up with Windows and want my next computer to be a Mac—but the product landscape has changed a lot since the last time I seriously considered it. Is an iMac really a competitive machine for someone doing heavy graphics and video work? [more inside]
Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.
I'm in grad school. My friend/classmate accidentally knocked over her water bottle on Wednesday and drenched my MacBook Air (which was on the classroom table about three feet away), killing at least the motherboard (per the repair shop where I took it) and possibly other things as well. It will cost at least $520 to repair; I'm out of AppleCare coverage because I got my computer a bit over a year ago. I have two questions. [more inside]

Thanks MeFites for your assistance; now for a Mac Mini question! The Flashdrake is needs a new computer to take to Italy for around 5 months a year; he currently uses an all-in-one desktop PC in Australia running Windows 7 and a 23" screen. Has been using a 17" 2010 laptop now running Windows 8 when travelling to Italy, although doesn't like using it, finds the screen hard to see, and never got a handle on Win8. I could buy a new laptop, or a new desktop to keep overseas, but it seems that getting a Mac Mini and hitching it up to a monitor at either end. While we would still backup, it seems like an elegant solution. He is not familiar with the iOS, but loves his iPad, which he uses when he needs portability when out and about. Is there something that I'm missing here? I imagine that as long as we avoid an expensive Apple monitor (that's possible, right?) it would work well, with be relatively cost effective. Thoughts? What am I missing here?

I am considering buying a new Macbook Pro with a solid-state drive, but the drives built into the laptop do not offer enough storage for me. If I buy an external Thunderbolt hard drive, will the laptop be able to seamlessly play music and video from files stored on the hard drive, or is there likely to be an annoying lag? Apart from portability, are there any technical issues with relying on an external hard drive for primary storage and everyday use? I am a fairly ordinary but media-heavy user.
I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]
I have an older MacBook I use when travelling (four or five times a year), and then the odd occasion when I am away from my office desktop. The battery on the MacBook died a few months ago, and I am guessing partially because I haven't been using it frequently enough. I am hesitant to replace the battery, figuring the same thing will happen again, is that right? Is there a downside to not having a working battery on the computer itself? And lastly, is there a problem with leaving the dead battery in the computer?
Question about Itunes Match....I just got off the phone with an Apple Care Specialist, but I have some doubts of the answers I received as the gentlemen never truly came across as confident in any answers he gave me, as well as a lot of it contradicts stuff I have read by looking around online...Looking for confirmation and clarification... Need advice on how to update an older MacBook Pro with a new hard drive. I have a late-2008 MacBook Pro: 2.53 GHz, 320GB hard drive, 8GM RAM (4GB in two slots). My drive is getting full and I don't have the cash at the moment for a brand new laptop. Should I replace the optical drive with a SSD? Or just upgrade the regular hard drive with a new one with 750GB or 1TB? [more inside]

Cat chewed through my macbook power cord. I tried to fix it, but when I plugged it in it sparked a little bit and then went out. Say I have an iPad. I decide not to get AppleCare, but I do get an extended warranty using my AMEX card. If my iPad has a problem at the 13 month mark (aka 1 month after the factory warranty expires) and needs to be replaced (which the Apple Store often will do for you), how do I invoke the AMEX card extended warranty so I don't have to pay for the refurbished replacement? Should I buy a macbook or an ipad? I travel for work pretty frequently and would mostly be using the computer for internet, downloading books and video, things like that, which makes the ipad tempting. I own another laptop, but it's older, so my concern with buying the ipad is that if my current laptop breaks, having ONLY an ipad might not be smart. Would it be worth buying a macbook air because of that? Also, this would be my first mac/ipad, so are there other pros and cons of which I should be aware?
