Help me convince my testy landlady to let me continue to keep bikes inside!

How can I convince my soon-to-be landlady that keeping bikes inside will not result in damage or a bike-house apocalypse? She's strongly insisting that bikes (currently inside) be moved outside, where they will almost certainly be stolen, and at least damaged by rain/weather. (Long - Lots of context/details about testy maintenance issues with previous leaseholder inside.) [more inside]

Moving from SF to Silicon Valley - need advice on cars and housing

So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions: [more inside]

The quandry of a nosy neighbour.

We live in a large apartment building mainly occupied by retirees and young professionals. It's pretty quiet and there's not usually a lot of drama around here. A month or two ago, new young couple moved in on our floor. Coincidentally, also a month or two ago, we started hearing loud, angry arguments coming from one of the nearby apartments. The yelling makes me awfully uncomfortable and I feel like I should help somehow. Do I have any responsibilities as a neighbour apartment dweller to make sure everyone is all right down the hall? Grind down our lead painted windows?

Conflicting problems with both non-closing windows and likely lead paint in a Los Angeles rental. Maintenance plan to grind them all down later this week and I'm pregnant and worried about the dust. I would deeply appreciate some advice on how this might play out and how to handle it (yes, not legal advice) especially advice from those who know about California and LA rental issues. Should we ask for compensation for cleaning our new apartment?

My parents are being pushed out of their current rental apartment in Northern Virginia and need to locate a new rental by the end of October, but their circumstances are challenging and I need advice on how best to assist them.

My parents are in their 70s and are on a fixed income– a fairly low fixed income– and were forced to declare bankruptcy last year due to significant medical bills. These medical issues also made it difficult for them to maintain their household, resulting in an accumulation of dirt and debris that has forced their current rental complex to issue a polite but firm eviction notice. I am attempting to relocate them much closer to me so that my family and I can provide regular assistance to them, both financial and day-to-day, but they've already been rejected by two rather modest rental complexes (including one at which they previously lived for 25 years). To complicate matters, my mother is in a wheelchair and needs an apartment with few or no barriers (stairs, hills, etc.). Moving them into my home is not an option for a variety of reasons. I'm trying to locate a rental apartment somewhere in Northern Virginia and at this point would take anything. Can anyone tell me where to turn?

10 days until rent is due!

I have been very happily living in a 3BR apt in Seattle (lower queen anne) with a couple for almost 2 years, and today they're moving out to a house together. In 10 days rent is due. I have posted on craigslist for new roommates to move in. I've asked a few friends to help me screen people, but I'm still freaking out because I'm extremely nervous about choosing new roommates! I really like being close friends with my roommates, so this feels like dating. I'd love any advice & experiences you could share! [more inside]

It's like being locked in steerage on the Titanic!

Is this a safety code violation? For two years I've lived in a two story courtyard style building in Los Angeles. Someone keeps tampering with the locks and management won't do anything about it, instead, they've opted to permanently chain shut two gates that provide safe exit from the building. The two other pedestrian doors (front door and basement garage door) they try to keep working. Having the side gates permanently chained makes me uncomfortable. [more inside]

Why can so many people get away with overposting on craigslist?

Apartment hunting in NYC is a major pain for almost everyone. But lately it seems that craigslist overposters are winning the battle of keeping their listings on top, and posting the same property an obscene amount of times each day. If your looking for a particular neighborhood and price range, you will click and see the same aprartment over and over, sometimes for weeks at a time. They must be getting flagged. I flag people when it is obvious. Why are they not banned? I guess the question is, what can I do? Is flagging really helping, or is it just a placebo? [more inside]

Inspection, possible eviction, related to pets and lease.

Former apartment manager advised us to cut corners with regard to pets (we have two dogs, two cats) in our original lease (which was written to say we have one dog, one cat that somehow allowed us to pay a single $200 pet fee). The new manager has made this an issue as we attempt to renew our lease and has scheduled an inspection for Tuesday, which may result in eviction or us being asked to "remove" two pets. [more inside]
