I'm a single female looking for a studio or one-bedroom apartment in Jersey City. My big concerns are: 1) safety, 2) affordability, and 3) ease of access to the city. Based on my preliminary research and a couple of apartment viewings, it seems nearly impossible to get all 3. I look at affordable apartments, then look up directions to my office and various activities in the city. I know that the official directions don't allow for things like the extra, non-Jersey transit busses that sometimes run frequently; however, I'm not aware of any way to research where the extra busses run. Specifically, there's a great apartment near Lincoln park, but if google directions are to be believed it will take me over an hour to get home from my weeknight meetings in midtown, which is highly undesirable. I've been defining "affordable" as 1200 or less, but I'm beginning to think I will have to adjust that in order to get the convenience. What advice can you give me about safe and convenient neighborhoods in Jersey City? [Asking on behalf of friend.]
My son 23 and single is moving the Charleston SCfor his first real post college job. What advice would you give him for finding an apartment on a modest income and living in what looks like to be a very cool city? Thanks.
YANML. I am in Vermont. I need to end my apartment lease early (ends 09/2014) because I cannot afford rent. Is this a reasonable request, and how do I go about asking my landlord? [more inside]
I am a first time city apartment dweller, and don't have a clue on how/when to use my door buzzer. What is okay, what isn't, and yes, I am over thinking this, but it is bugging the hell out of me because I am already overstressed. [more inside]
I am filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in New York City. Can anyone recommend a low-cost bankruptcy lawyer or other legal resource, since money is (obviously) limited? [more inside]
I'm looking to achieve this without air mists or plug-in air fresheners. Is this possible?
We've just moved into a new place and it's now gotten cold enough to turn on the heat. Two of the radiators are really loud with air escaping, and often have visible steam coming out of the valve on the side. I've never seen radiators do this. Is this normal? Is this safe?
Living in an apartment building and the hallways are smelling like marijuana. Like strong enough to choke on it. This is not the first time. [more inside]

2.5 bedroom apartment, top floor, in Texas. Would any simple, DIY insulating tricks help? If so, what, how, where to get them? Difficulty: Can hammer, can drill, probably shouldn't be allowed to use power tools. [more inside]
I recently moved cross country, and had to break my apartment lease 3 months early in order to do so. I gave my landlords a month and a half notice, and they immediately began showing my place. When the time came for me to turn in my keys, I told them the date of my departure and gave them my forwarding address, and in their reply (via email), they did not indicate that they had not leased my apartment yet (otherwise I would have left an additional check for the month of October). Today I received a bill from them for the remainder of the rent on the lease, plus additional cleaning fees that were not subtracted from my deposit. The bill indicates that my deposit has been forfeited as well. I'm finding the whole thing a bit fishy though, because Craigslist does not indicate that my apartment is for rent (that's how I found the place initially), and they waited to SNAIL MAIL this bill until October 11th, when the rent was due on October 5th (they also have my email and phone number). As it stands, if I am on the hook, I will have to call them regardless, because a mailed check will not make it back to them by "within 7 days of the date of this notice (October 11th)". What can I do to address this situation? [more inside]
I received a message from my property manager complaining about cigarette and pot smoking in my building/near my apartment. I live in a mid-rise building in Chicago, and 2-3x a week will partake in the latter activity (do not smoke cigarettes at all). [more inside]
My landlord and I have a previously discussed arrangement where if I am able to save him a call to a handyman by dealing with an issue myself, I can ask for "whatever's fair" off of rent. Yesterday, a visit by the utility company took up a large part of my day. Not sure if I should ask for money and if so, how much, and how to phrase. [more inside]
We have a roach infestation in our new apartment. Ha ha ha. What's a good gameplan? Is it weird that I've accepted it? [more inside]
Last night around 5 in the morning, we woke up because it smelled like natural gas--hard. After determining it wasn't coming from the oven, I remembered groggily to check the maintenance closet in our hallway, which contains two water heaters--one for our apartment, one for the apartment next door--and the natural gas furnace that heats our apartment through vents. I think something is happening to our furnace that causes it to do this, but I don't know what; I managed to stop it, but I'm not sure how. [more inside]
I live in a rent-stabilized apartment in NYC. Our super lives in another building down the block run by the same company, and is pretty responsive to problems. The work we call him for isn't hanging curtains or changing light bulbs, but rather fixing reasonably-tough problems— stuff like tightening a loose faucet or fixing mild water damage in the shower ceiling from a leak upstairs. When would it be expected to tip? After repairs, or a gift around the holidays, or what?

My recently purchased 1000 sq ft one bedroom apartment has terrible lighting, and I have no experience retrofitting lighting. What are the best resources for learning about lighting? I live in an apartment in Washington DC. I suspect that my air conditioning/heating unit is filled with mold. Any recommendations for mold inspection services? [more inside]
When I moved into my apartment with my roommate, the manager at the time said we could remove or add roommates as we pleased and could even add a roommate and remove ourselves off the lease completely if we wanted to move away before the lease was up, so long as we notified the manager and signed a form. I am considering moving out before the lease ends. We now have a new manager and when I checked with her, she says this is not true, that I cannot be removed from the lease at all even if my roommate agrees to it. However, I looked over my lease and it seems to say that I absolutely CAN do that, as long as everyone agrees. (See extended for the exact lease quote.) [more inside]

My current rental house is too small, so I'm looking for a larger house or apartment to rent when my lease is up next month. I have excellent income and strong credit and good references, with roots in the area. I'm friendly and professional. I am decorating a new apartment and would like to put some nice pieces of art on the walls. I love some of the photographs in the Library of Congress collection and have thought about having them blown up and printed high-res. Which brings me to my question: What are the best high-res images (in the public domain) floating around the Internet? Or collections of public domain high-res images that I can turn into posters?

For the first time ever I have a space in my house just for cocktail preparation. Awesome. I have some great old glass bottles to go on top of this bar. Also Awesome. What do I put in these bottles to become the envy of cocktail-makers-and-consumers everywhere? How do I best use this space (close up) both in terms of keeping stuff on hand and visual appeal, base liquors, mixers, tools, garnishes, etc. Assume we'll drink anything, but the fussier and old fashioned, the better. We moved in to our apartment last October. It provides public wifi as part of the amenities. Problem is, it doesn't works consistently. "Works" as defined by not being able to simply go from one link to another without the computer/tablet being used dropping connection or lagging for over 5 minutes. We don't expect super streaming or anything. Just basic 1999 level internet. I have called Meraki (owned by Cisco) over 14 times since last October with varying responses and excuses and promises of call-back by managment, with few calls back. [more inside]
Is there a relatively easy, inexpensive way to reinforce my apartment door so that it cannot be kicked in during the day? Something very strong and secure but that is easily removable with minimal damage from the inside so that my security deposit won't go towards replacing the door? [more inside]

We won't be using our apartment for a few weeks and it would be great to earn a few bucks on it, but this is a 'nice if it happens' thing so I am looking for the single listing site which jointly maximizes ease of use and likelihood of rental. I would say no Craigslist as I would like some sort of middleman and perhaps rudimentary authentication. I have never used these services from either side, so feel free to mention any protips. If it matters, this is in New York City. Comparable apartments are asking $400+ / night (no idea if they are getting it, obviously).
I'm trying to find information on how much I should budget for heat in an apartment that uses oil heating. If you use oil heat, can you give me an estimate of your bills for that service as well as how many square feet you are heating? I'm in Milwaukee, WI.

This will take a bit of time as I will go into some details but bear with me please.I have seen the earlier threads but the kinda of questions I had are, sort of, very different. I am in early 30's and have just moved to NYC. I am by myself now and expect my wife to join me after December. Currently, am in a hotel provided by my employer and can have this for a month more. My office is in mid-town manhattan (near grand central) and one client whom I would be visiting often is in long island city. I plan to use subway extensively for my travel. So, I have started my house hunting now. Q1: Is this the right time or am I too late and I should beg my employer to give me couple of more weeks? [more inside]

Folks- because of your tips the UHaul made it to Phoenix! Now we're looking for a place to live in Phoenix and we are completely swamped. Our price range is 700-900 per month, 1 BR but we feel like it's such a big city that we don't know where the "good" parts of town are. Good being your car isn't broken into once a week or it's safe to walk alone outside at night without getting mugged. We don't want to live totally in the suburbs- is there a happy medium? I need to get my 2 BR apt in the Washington, DC area painted before I move in. But my only personal-networking options have fallen through: the co-op itself is presently too short-staffed, and it turns out the guy recommended by my realtor can't do it until August. I really need it painted ASAP--although I'd also like a neat, professional job. Is it realistic, to want to get it painted much sooner than August? If so, how can I go about finding a good and reliable painter or company, being new to the area? (Bonus if you have a painter/company in the area whose work you liked and you would recommend!)

I'm trying to help a friend find an apartment to rent. She is on a low fixed income which will not meet the gross-income-must-be-3x-rent formula most landlords around here require their renters to meet, but she will be receiving assistance from family to ensure her expenses are covered. What kind of support or advice could I provide to help her find a place that will rent to her? [more inside]
