Just moved into a new apartment. YAY! The apartment is in terrible shape. Boo. Our move-in condition form has the following clause, "I understand that the management company has also
performed an inspection of the property, including digital photographs of all areas, and
said report will prevail in any instances of conflicts." They will not show me their inspection report. How do I ensure that theirs doesn't say that everything is fine, and we get dinged for a whole ton of stuff that's already bad. Jurisdiction: Chicago.

We're moving out of our San Francisco apartment after 6.5 years. We painted one wall orange. After mentioning to a few people that we were bummed that we wouldn't have time to repaint it and thus would get a ding to our security deposit, they all said that after a certain amount of time, we weren't responsible for repainting.
What are the laws on this? Checked the San Francisco Tenants Union and Housing Rights Committee sites, but didn't see any info. Would one or the other be better to call, or can anyone point us to the information?

We gave a check (for a security deposit) to a potential landlord to hold our spot in line. The landlord wasn't going to cash the check until she approved us for the house. We got the house (pending a signed lease agreement). When should the landlord cash the deposit check?

I have my former roommate's security deposit. I don't know his new address. How do I get him the money slash how long do I have to keep trying to contact him before I'm allowed to give up and keep it for myself?

Can I persuade my landlord to let me use my security deposit for my last month's rent? If not, what's my next best option? ( I'm dealing with paying my credit card bills too.)

Landlord took 60 days to return security deposit (the max is 45 days), there has been no interest added to it, and she's taken a healthy chunk of money out for "repairs." This is in Chicago. Should I take her to court?

ApartmentFilter: Is it financially safe to not clean up impeccably when moving out of an apartment, or will a landlord normally go after you for money over and above the security deposit, if they think enough work was involved?
