Landlord putting apartment on the market

The owner of the condo I'm renting has informed me that he's putting it on the market, and had a realtor check out the place and talk to me. He thinks any future buyer will likely be a professional real estate buyer, who will continue with the lease arrangement I currently have, but there's no assurance that this will be the case. Meanwhile, another apartment has opened up in the same complex, a complex which I love. Do I stay or move? [more inside]

Previous tenant left unpaid gas bill

I moved into my new apartment on Sept 1st. Today, I received a "shut off notice" from the gas company (National Grid in Boston) stating that my unit has an unpaid balance of over $100 as of 8/29, and that the account will be going to collections. This is my first apartment - what should I do, AskMefi? Pay down the balance? Inform my landlord?

My new building requires renters insurance: pls advise me on the basics

Why are there no apartment yentas, for tight rental housing markets?

If I were looking for an apartment right now I would love to delegate the search and matchmaking to someone who made such searches, and presentation of credit data, references etc, their occupation, and I'm sure that many busy people would also want to use this service. Why aren't there people who do this?

Grad student, thinking of becoming Rental Agent for LL, or Buyer

Greetings! My LLs are about 85 and seem to be over being LLs. There are 11 units in my building, 3 of which were rented for the year, we had a 4th tenant but she moved out the 4th month. I secured all of these tenants. My LLs obviously could have made a lot more money if they rented all the units. I can easily get tenants and have no problem doing so, the only obstacle is the LLs, they do not get back to emails and lose many of the renters I get (I show them the unit and it takes the LL 2 weeks to email back). help me relocate, short-term

I have just learned that I may need to be out of my apartment by the end of the month. I am thinking of a furnished rental for a few months until I've figured out where I want to live next. I have been in this place over 20 years and my head is spinning. I will need to put things in storage, and I have a cat. I am also a smoker. My costs will all be covered for the rental and storage and the moves (both to the rental and the final place I choose). I am in the NYC area. I have about three weeks to figure this out. Help! Advice?

What am I on the hook for after breaking my apartment lease in Seattle?

I recently moved cross country, and had to break my apartment lease 3 months early in order to do so. I gave my landlords a month and a half notice, and they immediately began showing my place. When the time came for me to turn in my keys, I told them the date of my departure and gave them my forwarding address, and in their reply (via email), they did not indicate that they had not leased my apartment yet (otherwise I would have left an additional check for the month of October). Today I received a bill from them for the remainder of the rent on the lease, plus additional cleaning fees that were not subtracted from my deposit. The bill indicates that my deposit has been forfeited as well. I'm finding the whole thing a bit fishy though, because Craigslist does not indicate that my apartment is for rent (that's how I found the place initially), and they waited to SNAIL MAIL this bill until October 11th, when the rent was due on October 5th (they also have my email and phone number). As it stands, if I am on the hook, I will have to call them regardless, because a mailed check will not make it back to them by "within 7 days of the date of this notice (October 11th)". What can I do to address this situation? [more inside]

Should I ask my landlord for money off rent?

My landlord and I have a previously discussed arrangement where if I am able to save him a call to a handyman by dealing with an issue myself, I can ask for "whatever's fair" off of rent. Everyone in me is a bird, but landlords won't rent to any of us.

My current rental house is too small, so I'm looking for a larger house or apartment to rent when my lease is up next month. I have excellent income and strong credit and good references, with roots in the area. I'm friendly and professional. But I have a feeling that potential landlords may be refusing to rent to me because they suspect I am pregnant. (I am not.) [more inside]

Where should I list my apartment for a week's sublet

We won't be using our apartment for a few weeks and it would be great to earn a few bucks on it, but this is a 'nice if it happens' thing so I am looking for the single listing site which jointly maximizes ease of use and likelihood of rental. I would say no Craigslist as I would like some sort of middleman and perhaps rudimentary authentication. I have never used these services from either side, so feel free to mention any protips. If it matters, this is in New York City. Comparable apartments are asking $400+ / night (no idea if they are getting it, obviously).

Re(le)nting in NYC

This will take a bit of time as I will go into some details but bear with me please.I have seen the earlier threads but the kinda of questions I had are, sort of, very different. I am in early 30's and have just moved to NYC. I am by myself now and expect my wife to join me after December. Currently, am in a hotel provided by my employer and can have this for a month more. My office is in mid-town manhattan (near grand central) and one client whom I would be visiting often is in long island city. I plan to use subway extensively for my travel. So, I have started my house hunting now. Q1: Is this the right time or am I too late and I should beg my employer to give me couple of more weeks? [more inside]

How best to use Airbnb as a host?

I finally got my act together and put my Brooklyn apartment up on Airbnb this morning. I'm a little surprised to be already receiving inquiries, and I realize now I really don't know how to vet these potential renters. For those who have hosted through the site before, what criteria do you use? Is no photo a red flag or is that normal? Is it suspicious or ordinary for them not to have much of a profile filled out? Are there specific questions I should be asking in my initial reply? (Will it make them suspicious if I ask for identifying information?) Are there scams to watch out for? Is there anything you'd add to a listing to head off potential trouble? [more inside]
