Finding an apartment without the nasty trash compactor odors

This is a question about NYC real estate, specifically about a building maintenance issue. After many years of renting, I am in the market for a co-op apartment in the five boroughs of NYC. There is a problem with my current building that I am willing to tolerate as a tenant that would be a complete deal-breaker as an owner The issue is this: [more inside]

Best way to look for apt share in NYC?

I'm looking for an apt share in NYC within 20 minutes or so to midtown by train. Is craigslist the best place to look? Do you have any general tips on how to do the search, what to avoid? My experience so far is that it can look good on photos but still be very rundown, but no photos/details is likely to be even that much worse.

Landlord wants to replace gas oven with electric. Help?

We have enjoyed 6+ years of our gas oven/stovetop, but now our NYC landlord is planning to replace all the ovens in our building with electric. This seems like it will make our (already high) electricity bill even higher. Is there anything we can do? [more inside]

Best apartment gift?

My brother's birthday is next Friday, and I am honestly stymied as to what to get him (and cannot get a serious answer out of him.) He is in his early 30's, and just moved into a new apartment that has a cute outdoor space. (Pavement ground) Does anyone have a similar space? He and his girlfriend have already furnished the place, so they don't need essentials. Etsy-friendly suggestions particularly welcome.

Tipping super in a rent-stabilized building?

I live in a rent-stabilized apartment in NYC. Our super lives in another building down the block run by the same company, and is pretty responsive to problems. The work we call him for isn't hanging curtains or changing light bulbs, but rather fixing reasonably-tough problems— stuff like tightening a loose faucet or fixing mild water damage in the shower ceiling from a leak upstairs. When would it be expected to tip? After repairs, or a gift around the holidays, or what?

Down to the wire

I'm looking for an Oct. 1st roommate share in Brooklyn, and so far I'm coming across shockingly few places listed on Craigslist. Is there another list I'm not aware of? I already put word out to my network. Details: -- I've lived in BK for six years (Crown Heights + Park Slope), and have never had trouble finding a place before. --Budget is $1100 and under. --Looking to stay for 6 months or longer --I'm searching under "rooms & shares" AND "sublets & temporary" Thanks!!

Re(le)nting in NYC

This will take a bit of time as I will go into some details but bear with me please.I have seen the earlier threads but the kinda of questions I had are, sort of, very different. I am in early 30's and have just moved to NYC. I am by myself now and expect my wife to join me after December. Currently, am in a hotel provided by my employer and can have this for a month more. My office is in mid-town manhattan (near grand central) and one client whom I would be visiting often is in long island city. I plan to use subway extensively for my travel. So, I have started my house hunting now. Q1: Is this the right time or am I too late and I should beg my employer to give me couple of more weeks? [more inside]

Loans for NYC Moving Expenses

I'm planning to move from one NYC neighborhood to another at the end of the summer. Gross sticky nasty gunk everywhere

I live in a pre-war (1920's?) Brooklyn apartment building. Recently, the ceiling in the kitchen collapsed due to a leak in the pipes above, spreading plaster, dust, and wet and dry gunk everywhere. Now the landlord has completed a shoddy-looking repair, again leaving everything in the kitchen covered in dust and powder and sticky gunk. Every. Single. Thing. Two questions: how do I find out if we are in danger of asbestos exposure? How do I proceed if we are?

Why can so many people get away with overposting on craigslist?

Apartment hunting in NYC is a major pain for almost everyone. But lately it seems that craigslist overposters are winning the battle of keeping their listings on top, and posting the same property an obscene amount of times each day. If your looking for a particular neighborhood and price range, you will click and see the same aprartment over and over, sometimes for weeks at a time. They must be getting flagged. I flag people when it is obvious. Why are they not banned? I guess the question is, what can I do? Is flagging really helping, or is it just a placebo? [more inside]
