I have a large mirror that my former roommates acquired via dumpster diving. It measures 48" x 36". It has 4 small holes, one drilled in each corner, 5" diagonally from the corners and 3.5" from the sides. It's unframed and quite heavy. How can I hang it without using glue or mastic? [more inside]

I'm interested in stories about living in apartments where something bad has happened. Apartments with gnarly histories. Murders, suicides, 'haunted' apartments, whatever. Did it affect the value? Did you learn about it only later? Did you hire an exorcist? Did a new paint job suffice? etc. Anyone have such stories, or know of such?

I live in a sorta gritty urban area in a ground-floor apartment that has semi-burglar-accessible windows that have no bars or gates. (The landlord is a cheap slum-owning pig, no help.) What should I install myself for serious home security that'll still let me enjoy a nice breeze and also peace of mind and body? Alarms? Internal bars? Any fave products? Money is almost no object, but I'd really rather not have to use a hammer drill on the exterior brick. My 23 year-old brother is moving to London for a couple of years (European citizen, so no work permit issues). He will have very little money when he gets there, so he is looking for affordable lodging. When I did the same thing 10 years ago, I stayed at a hostel for a couple of months until I had a steady income, had enough money for a deposit, and found roommates for a flat. Would you concur that this is the best option, and if so, do you have any hostels to recommend? Mine was in Holland Park and I liked it, but I can't remember the name or anything about it. I'd also appreciate hearing any alternate suggestions for inexpensive housing in London. Thank you very much for your help!

Portable Air Con: My flat (apartment) is too hot when the weather's like this, and I'm looking to do something about it for the comfort of our new baby who's been a nightmare since the warm spell started. Anyone know if these things are any good? I here to avoid "air coolers", any other advice (and what is a 'mechanical air conditioner'?)... btw fitting proper a\c is out of the question because of planning regs).....
