Website help

What happened to my Mom's web site? I made this site about 9 months ago and all is well, today this popped up? any ideas? Thanks! I made this site for my Mom, http://symbolsoffaith.org/
and now the page you see saying what I posted below. Can anyone help me figure out what went wrong? thanks

"If you can see this page, then the people who manage this server have installed cPanel and WebHost Manager (WHM) which use the Apache Web server software and the Apache Interface to OpenSSL (mod_ssl) successfully. They now have to add content to this directory and replace this placeholder page, or else point the server at their real content."

3-5 days and good programming skills. I wanna build something cool!

I have 3-5 days (starting tomorrow!) in which I'm off from work, and have really nothing planned. As a developer geek in a crappy economy, I'm looking at looming unemployment and/or the start of a freelance career in the very near future. I want to this time making "something" that I can use in my portfolio to show potential employers/clients. What on earth can I build? Ideas for sites are a dime a dozen, except for when I need one. I'd like to build something cool that I can show off. Trouble is, I'd like to get it out, at least v0.1, after only 3-5 days of work. All my ideas involve considerably more effort than that. And I at least want it to be somewhat fun and/or interesting and/or to teach me something new... I can write boring code at work.

So mefites -- what should I build? I know the LAMP stack pretty well, where the 'P' can be either PHP, Python or Perl (although right now PHP is my strongest language). I can thnk in SQL -- databases are not a problem. I have more than enough hosting and a good dev environment. I can learn things (APIs, etc) pretty quickly. Maybe something fun with Google Maps? A Facebook app? An entire site? I'm open to all and any ideas...

Yes, there are better uses for my time. I should be networking, yadda yadda, but this is my vacation and I don't wanna. :) I never get to write what I want to write anymore. Assume my resume is up to date and polished.

I thought WAMPserver was, like, for idiots. I feel like an idiot so why doesn't it work?

I am following a tutorial on how to install WAMPserver and Wordpress on my Windows machine to kickstart my learning of CM systems and PHP. A crucial component won't install and I don't know nuthin' about how to fix the problem. I found This tutorial on installing and configuring WAMPserver, which is ideal for a dunderhead like myself who can barely compute. When I get to the part where they tell you to go to SQLitemanager, I realized that it wasn't in my WAMPserver menu. I have unistalled and reinstalled twice and it doesn't show up. I have tried to duplicate their instructions using a SQLite Manager plugin for Firefox but it isn't working. I have searched for evidence of other people having the same problem but came up empty-handed. I am at a loss to find a solution. Am I looking for the answers in the wrong places? This is being installed on a machine without windows server software.

Simple Mod_Rewrite Help!

I need help with a simple mod_rewrite! I have some domains in Cpanel. I'll call them domain1.com, domain2.com and domain3.com.

I want all 3 of these domains to be redirected/have their doc root set as /public_html/myfolder/

Easy enough for domains 2 and 3, since they are addons, and I can set where their root is. But domain 1 is the main domain, and its root is set as /public_html/

What mod_rewrite can I use to ensure that domain1.com is redirected to the /myfolder under public_html?

Also, as an added bonus, /myfolder has various subfolders on it, so domain2.com/abba is the same as domain3.com/abba, because of how their roots are set. I need to ensure that domain1.com/abba will actually go to that folder through the mod_rewrite.

Thank you so much in advance!!

Portents of Porting Ports

ApacheFilter: What's the easiest way to have a "default page" on an alternate port? I've got Comcast cable internet at home, and I run a web server with several VirtualHosts.
Thinking about switching to FiOS, where port 80 is blocked.
The simple solution is to move my web content over to a different port -- in this case 81.
I've already set up the server to Listen on both ports. That's the easy part.

What I want to do is, before port 80 goes away, put a special note and redirect notice when people access any of my pages, at any of my domains, at port 80, without having 2 different versions of every domain.

What is the easiest way to accomplish this?

It is Apache 2.2.3 on Ubuntu where I have full root privileges.

Is there anyway with apache redirect's (mod_rewrite with a 301 rule) for the underlying web page to detect the redirect and run some JS or PHP (or anything really) to say, 'HEY USER!!! Ya you! Change your bookmarks please!'? I would like to change the domain name for a website I have and I can handle the actual rewrite rules just fine, but I would really like people to notice when they have been redirected so I can eventually phase out the old domain name.

Ideally, this could be bit of inline text above the banner for the web page. (Maybe I could make it blood red or blinking if I was feeling evil....)

I do *not* want to use pop-ups. Not web page pop-ups nor notification pop-ups. (You know, those 'OK or Cancel' ones). That would be annoying.

PS - I am aware that changing the domain name will kill page rank, etc. It is a very low traffic site and I am not concerned about that at all.

And now that I logically follow that through... It being low traffic, I guess this is a slightly moot question, but now that I am stumped it is going to bug me until I find an answer.

How do I keep sneaky website users from accessing files directly? I have a site (apache, php, mysql) where users can purchase podcast videos and mp3s. When the user brings up a video page, it checks (via php/mysql) to see if he/she is allowed to view that video. I've had a problem, however, with users viewing the page source and sharing the url of the video file they find there with others. Can I (a) obscure the url using javascript or something so they can't see the actual filename or (b) do something server-side to prevent direct access of the files or (c) something else?

Why does Apache2 serve a subdomain when given an IP?

I have a domain hosted on a VPS running CentOS5. Whenever I enter http://my-vps-ip in my browser, I get redirected to http://subdomain.mysite.com.

My limited Google-fu is no match for this particular problem, so I'm hoping the folks at AskMeFi can tell me how I should setup Apache so that http://my-vps-ip goes to http://mysite.com and not the subdomain? Extracts from the httpd.conf file:

ServerName mysite.com
...
UseCanonicalName Off

conf file defining the subdomain:

<virtualhost *:80>
ServerName      subdomain.mysite.com
DocumentRoot    /var/www/subdomain
ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/subdomain_mysite_com-error.log
CustomLog /var/log/httpd/subdomain_mysite-access.log combined
<directory>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride AuthConfig FileInfo Indexes Limit
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</directory>
< /virtualhost>

Also, FWIW - currently the rDNS lookup on my VPS IP goes to ns1.mysite.com.

Many thanks!

I am new to this and need to get this done soon. So I would really appreciate some advice. I am trying to setup a reverse proxy for our intranet and have been playing around with mod_proxy and mod_proxy_html for Apache. It all seems to work on regular html pages fine. But when I get to RSS/ATOM feeds mod_proxy_html does not seem to work. Any advise how can I do it ? I saw there is something called mod_proxy_xml. But not sure it will do the job and I dont have a build setup to quickly build it for Ubuntu. Would really appreciate some tips and pointers. I am sure others have done this already.

How can we automatically block DOS type attacks in a load balanced environment? We used to have mod_evasive on Apache, but now Apache is behind a a load balancer and so does not see the external IPs.
The future of client/server deployment?

How are people deploying web applications with client/server interaction these days? After a failed attempt at getting a Java servlet up using Apache Tomcat, I'm looking to see what else is out there. Ideally, I'd like to stick with JAVA, but I suppose it's also in my best interest to pick up other popular languages if that's seems to be where the flow is going.

Tomcat was useful, but documentation on it was sparse and outdated, and troubleshooting just to get the thing working was a pretty hairy experience. What's a good alternative?

Bonus points to employees that actually use said alternative for their own job. I'm not too worried about ease or interface, just as long as it's a technology that is well documented, meaning more than 100 articles/posts made about it within the past year!

At my office we're running a number of different third-party web applications for things like blogs, ticket tracking, cms, and so forth. I would like to apply some consistent themes to these applications without having learn n different theming mechanisms. I'm hoping y'all can provide me with some suggestions. I'm familiar with deliverance, which so far seems like the best solution, although it seems to have wandered away from xpath queries, which made a lot of sense, into the mists of yet-another-*ml-query-language.

Are there any other solutions out there?

What's the best way to use both IIS and Apache? Are there any major flaws in how I am hoping to solve this?

I do not know if what I am imagining about how to solve my web server problem is realistic or not. Is there a better solution than the ones I have thought of? This concerns addings IIS to my machine that is currently running Apache only... I have a couple of Joomla sites running on Apache/MySQL on a Vista Ultimate box. Running on Vista instead of Windows Server 2003 or Linux may be the first problem, but it is what I have for now. In the worst case, I will install something new. But, for now, Vista it is.

So far, I have one static IP address, and it is connected to a couple of domain names:

www.firstdomain.com = /apache/joomla1
www.seconddomain.com = /apache/joomla2

What I need to do is add IIS and MS SQL for another application that I have to host.

The easy solution is to make IIS listen on Port 8080 (or anything other than 80). However, I do not think this will be possible because does that not mean that users will have to type www.thirddomain.com:8080 when they want to visit this new site? No one will know to type 8080, so this will probably not be the best solution.

Solutions that my inexperienced brain has tried to come up with:

a) Put a temporary page on apache so that
www.thirddomain.com = /apache/temporary, and this page in the apache directory re-directs to www.thirddomain.com:8080

Problem: what if someone enters www.thirddomain.com/firstdirectory/firstsubdirectory/file.asp&param1=a ... this will not successfully redirect then, will it?

b) Install some sort of reverse proxy on apache that looks at incoming requests and modifies the URL so that it adds the 8080 to each www.thirddomain.com/* request in the correct place.

Problem: are there any easy to install/configure reverse proxies out there? Do I even correctly understand what a reverse proxy does?

c) Get 2 IP addresses, trick IIS and Apache to both use Port 80 (I have found a site that kind of explains how to do this), and have each web server only respond to a specific IP address.

Problem: has anyone heard of this or done this? Will this work on Vista? The people discussing it in the now dead forum were using Windows 2003 server

d) ** Your solution here **

Please help!

Thank you kindly.

Can I restrict access to a symbolically-linked path using htaccess? I have a Solaris file system that my Apache web server accesses through a symbolic link. I need to restrict access to those files to a select group of users. The rules for access are in a MySQL db, so I'm thinking I can run a cron to regularly generate an htpasswd file. An htaccess file won't work on the remote file system (which isn't running apache), though, will it? Can I add something to my httpd.conf file which will make users authenticate before accessing content on the other side of that symlink?

Portuguese character set on Apache

I need to display Portuguese characters on a webpage, but when I upload the files to the Apache server, they stop displaying correctly. And, yes, I'm using UTF-8 encoding. I've been provided with a number of HTML pages with Portuguese characters on them. If I look at the files on my (Windows) desktop machine, they look fine, but once I upload them to the (Ubuntu 7.04) web server, they're replaced with those annoying question mark characters.

I've done some digging around, and have found that if I copy/paste the chars into a new file, and then request it, they display just fine; it seems the act of SCPing the file up to the server screws them up (either that or pasting the text fixes them up).

If I strip it right back to a single word file (containing "Você" -- that last character is ASCII #234), and compare the ASCII codes of the characters contained there in, I get the following:

- this one displays correctly in one's browser (i.e. was the copy/paste effort):
V => 86
o => 111
c => 99
à => 195
ª => 170

- but this one doesn't (i.e. SCPed) despite the ASCII code being correct:
V => 86
o => 111
c => 99
ê => 234

If necessary I'll write a perl script to translate the character combos to the correct HTML entities but I'd rather not. Is there some sly way I can get this to work?

How do I return an SSL URL from a non-SSL Apache?

Help Apache gurus! How do I setup a virtual host when SSL terminates before my Apache server? Hopefully this is easy since it seems like a common thing...

Here's the setup: Browser -> Load balancer -> Apache Server
The browser connects to the load balancer using https (https://www.example.com). But then the load balancer directs the request to Apache using http (http://host1.company.com). Fine.

Now, how do I use the virtual host directive to have Apache return an https url to the browser? If i just have:

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName www.example.com
</VirtualHost>

in httpd.conf then URLs are returned to the client as http URLs which doesnt work. Is this possible? Thanks!

I am having trouble with URLs 404ing on an Apache/MySQL server for a website using Wordpress, with some custom add-ons to use Wordpress as a CMS. I have a website which I have built for a client using Wordpress, on an Apache server with MySQL as the database. Their blog is available on http://www.theirdomain.com/blog/ and works fine.

I've created several index.php files on the main site, and in subfolders, using the Wordpress header and some custom PHP code to pull their page content from the WP database (I'm using Wordpress pages as data for a CMS). The URLs for the pages are in the format http://www.theirdomain.com/services and http://www.theirdomain.com/aboutus/

Unfortunately, I am having several errors a day with problems and 404 where the URLs are not resolving properly (i.e. you type in http://www.theirdomain.com/aboutus/ and it 404s). I can get round it by typing the filename index.php at the end, but I wanted to keep the URLs "clean".

The problem mainly occurs in IE7 (no surprise), but has occurred to several users - my clients and clients of theirs, and they are understandably miffed.

Can someone help point me towards any possible solutions?

Linux/Unix Admin Filter: What is your preferred method for monitoring bandwidth use per virtual host in Apache? I could just log everything and run AWStats/Webalizer/whatever, but that seems overkill when all I really want is a MRTG or RRD Tool graph for each virtual host to indicate bandwidth used the last day, week, month and year. Do you use the impossible to find mod_watch or something else?

Using Apache to (almost) bypass Apache?

Is there a simple way to use Apache's ProxyPass directive so that everything apart from a directory beneath the webroot gets passed on to another server? If not, can it be done another way? I'm wanting to combine lighttpd with Apache to take some load of a server, but unlike the standard ProxyPass setup, I'd like the httpd.conf to direct things like this:

http://mysite.com/        -> lighttpd running on port 81
http://mysite.com/foo/   -> Apache running on port 80

Is that possible with ProxyPass? If not, can it be done another way, perhaps by swapping the ports and putting it in the lighttpd config?
