Where was Shepherd Fairy interviewed?

In the article regarding the AP demanding compensation for Shepherd Fairy's appropriation of a photograph of Obama for the "Hope" poster, it says:

"I donated an image to them, which they used. It was the one that said "Change" underneath it. And then later on I did another one that said "Vote" underneath it, that had Obama smiling," he said in a December 2008 interview with an underground photography Web site.

Which underground photography website would that be? Googling the quote, or variations of, only brings me this news article.

Help fix a cafe's wireless setup!

Any advice on setting up a wireless access point for a cafe for a budget of under $200? I am trying to set up a wireless access point for a cafe. There is likely to be a maximum of 30 users. Here are four options for a set-up given a budget of under $200:

a) consumer wireless router, say the Linksys WRT600N running dd-wrt,

b) 'pro-sumer'/office wireless router like say DLINK 724GU

c) 'pro-sumer' wap like say NETGEAR WAG102 paired with a consumer router to do NAT and minimal firewall

d) 'pro-sumer' wired router ala CISCO SMB RVS4000 paired with a cheap consumer wireless router used as an access point.

The WAN would be a DSL line. This is a free service so nothing is going to be 100%. Right now the cafe is using a consumer dsl-modem/wireless router and it is, not surprisingly, not dealing very well with the load. In particularly it seems like it doesn't like routing that many users, but signal strength is basically fine.

I guess the basic question is whether managing the wireless connections or the routing is the weak point for a cheap setup.

So, when will we know who won this thing, eh?

How does projecting the winner of the US presidential election work? And what is the earliest time at which the election may be called? To clarify, I'm asking about television networks -- let's define these as ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, PBS for the sake of this question -- not other news sources such as the AP.

Now, let's break this down into several more specific questions:

(1) Is it possible that a network calls a state before all of its polls are closed, e.g. California for the Democratic candidate or Utah for the Republican, based on the assumption that it almost certainly will not break the other way? If not, is this a direct result of 2000 or has it always been this way?

(2) Extending the previous question, is it possible that a network calls the election before it has made 270 Electoral Votes worth of per-state calls for any candidate? For example, if at any given time the Democratic candidate has accumulated a projected 200 EV from states east of the Mississippi, will a network call the election based on the assumption that the West Coast's 73 EV will break for the Democrat? (A similar scenario could of course be constructed for the Republican candidate.)

(3) Are poll closing times this year identical to those in 2004?

(4) Based on the answers to (1), (2) and (3) and any other information, what is the earliest time the election could possibly be called?

I remember 2000 and 2004, and I understand that in close elections it can take a long time before a winner is projected. But I am too young to remember 1996 and earlier, and I can find very little convincing historical information online.

It logically follows that for this question I'm assuming a not-so-close election, or at least one that might allow for an earlier call than the last two times around. But I feel compelled to note that I am not necessarily assuming the 2008 election as it stands today. I'm asking about what is possible, not what's likely this time: in other words, this question should basically be equally applicable to 2012 or any hypothetical election, not specifically the 2008 election as it stands today.

Lastly, it goes without saying, but I would ask you to kindly refrain from political discussion -- this is about how election night calls work and what is possible, not about who you want to win or think might win.

-----------

Historical bonus questions:

(5) For past presidential elections during the television era, what time was the earliest network call (for the presidency) made?

(6) Can you point to any video of this online, or any text accounts?

-----------

Let's assume ET for the sake of clarity. And more general information on specific broadcasters' policies, historical examples etc. would also be very welcome.

I'm sorry if this seems convoluted or like multiple questions for the price of one, but since the answer to one question essentially determines the other, I felt I had to break it down like this.

Let me know if anything's unclear, and thank you ever so much for any insight you might have. Thanks!

How to succeed in AP English Literature?

Help a high school senior make the most out of AP English Literature. Pretty basic: I'm a high school senior about to take an AP English Literature course... Tell me about your AP English Lit experience, where you failed, how you succeeded... What the classes were like, what books you read, how you took notes and read books... Relevant links, thoughts, etc.

Also: while test taking information is fine, I'm in this class to get the most out of it, not to get the best score on the test... although that would be fine too. Thanks!

Looking for a good Calc I/II workbook.

Planning on teaching myself Calculus I and II in order to take the AP Calculus BC exam this May. If you've taught or taken either class, at a high school, university, or independently, read on. To preface: I'm a very self-motivated person. I can stick with something to completion. My math background is very strong, I have all the requisite skills for Calculus.

This year in school (I'm a senior in high school) I'm taking an AP Calculus AB course. This is more or less equivalent to a Calc I course at the university level, just taught over the course of a year instead of a semester. We're two weeks into the class.

This past summer, however, I started studying calc independently. I found a good set of recorded lectures (Thinkwell's, if anyone cares) and watched a good bit, did some practice questions, and moved on. I went through basic limits and such, through taking derivatives of functions both with the definition of the derivative and with the power, product, quotient and chain rules. I started implicit differentiation around the end of the summer.

Now, I just *know* that my Calc AB class will move way too slow for me. We're approaching week three of the class, and we've been on "Exploring Limits Graphically" for like four days. This is unacceptable.

So, my plan is to cover everything we cover in our AB class (Calc I) and the material that will be on the BC exam (Calc II) by the time May rolls around, in order to take the exam. I'd love to get a 4 or 5 on the BC exam without ever taking a formal Calc II course. This is made a bit more doable by the fact that our textbook was designed for covering both exams, the class just never gets more than halfway through the book.

I've already started working ahead; we're on section 1.2 in class, I'm on section 1.5 on my own. The problem I'm finding is, I really need more practice problems. My textbook has a decent bit, but it tries to make everything a word problem. This is fine, I agree that knowing how to translate English into math is important, but sometimes I just feel the need to practice the calc more than the application.

So, I'm looking for a workbook that covers calc I and/or II. One for each or one for both is fine. Preferably, it would have questions more like "given f(x) = 4x^2, what is f'(2)?" than "A car accelerates at 4 m/s^2. how fast is the car traveling after two seconds?"

Book should come with answers definitely. Worked out solutions are not necessary, but nice. My calc teacher or my physics teacher from last year would be glad to help me out if I ever actually got stuck on something. If you took Calc I or II and worked out of a workbook in addition to your textbook, I'd love to know. I really don't need more instruction, just more problem sets.

I'm looking at This book and this book right now. Any thoughts from people who've used either would be appreciated.

Basically, my current plan is work through what our class will get through this year by Christmas, and cover the rest of the book by May. I bought two one-subject notebooks the other day, and I'm using one for straight notes from lectures/books, and the other for working out problems. I figure the notes will be useful in college and whenever I need a quick refresher.

Further, if anyone has any advice/tips/handy sites/books/whatever to share, please do!

Any more tips would be great!

When in doubt, it's a "renal" something or a "hepatic" something.

On Thursday morning, I'm taking my final exam in Anatomy & Physiology II. I typically have test anxiety, and this time, it's reaching fever pitch. What are your favorite little mnemonics and/or rules of thumb that you rely upon in order to remember... uh, everything? Tho I tend to test well, this particular exam is a pivotal one in my education. I have extensive notes, charts, books, diagrams, and what-not, all of which I've studied til the cows came home, but I find it comforting to have little mental crutches when thinking about complex subjects.

As an example, I adore the "Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas" mnemonic for remembering the leukocytes and their relative percentages in blood. From this, I can imagine the pictures I've drawn for each cell type, what they do, and so on and so forth.

On this exam will include: endocrine system, reproductive systems, fertilization and development, lymphatic and immune systems, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, metabolism (redox reactions; anabolism/catabolism of carbs, fats, and proteins), electrolytes in body fluids, and acid-base balance. I think that about covers it. The nervous system was covered in detail last semester, but of course, it permeates every other system, so it's still important to keep in studies.

My weak points are histology (locations of various connective tissues will kill me) and anatomical precision in areas such as cardiovascular layout. I'm strongest with chemistry and general physiology.

Aaaanyway, just as a matter of keeping my panic to a dull buzz, will you please share your mental crutches with me? My future patients and I thank you very much!

7 hours, how to study?

I have the day to study for AP exams and prepare a presentation. How can I spend it most effectively? I have two AP exams to study for: Calculus BC and European History. I don't know half the concepts in Calc BC, because I decided around two weeks ago that I would take it instead of AB. I'm confident that I can learn it, if I knew what to study. European History, I'm a bit more worried about. I don't know what to expect on the test and I don't know how to study a history book.

I also have a presentation that I'm delivering in my Theory of Knowledge class on Friday. I have the slideshow made; I just need to make a 15-minute presentation to accompany it.

I have around 7 hours to do all of these.

The AP US History "Packet"

Did you use "The Packet" in your AP US History course in high school? Do you remember what that was called, who wrote it, and how I could get it again? 10 years ago when I was a junior in high school, we had a regular course textbook, and then an optional (we had to pay some nominal fee for it) distilled 150 page "packet" of bullet point information of all US history. I didn't realize it at the time, but this packet was absolutely brilliant. And I want to get it back.

The teacher has since retired, and I'd rather not go tracking him down, so I thought I'd give AskMeFi a shot:

It was about 150 2x sided pages, and looked like something someone printed out on their dot matrix printer in the early 90s. Incredibly pithy and concise, sometimes used full sentences, sometimes did not. Lots and lots of numbered lists and bullet points though.

Does anyone recognize it? Does anyone have it, or information on it?

I'd LOVE to get this thing back.

Thanks!

Best Associated Press Host?

What's the best news site to link to for AP articles? Are there any free news sites that permanently archive their wire stories? I used to link to MyWay articles because there were no ads, no registration, and the links seemed to last a long time. Now, it seems like every AP article "expires" after about 3 months. And there's no way to search.

Neither CNN nor Yahoo News keep wire stories up for long.

Surely, there has to be a site that keeps a permanent, searchable archives of AP articles? Or is LexisNexis the only option?

Our small non-profit is trying to deploy some Cisco wireless bridges between buildings. Will a non-root bridge's radio show up as disabled if it cannot associate with the root-bridge?
Scenario:
Root Bridge on main building (Cisco 1240AG) - using 802.11A
2 satelite buildings have Cisco 1240AG Bridges in non-root mode using 802.11A
Radio status on root-bridge is up
Radio status on two non-root bridges is down
Using 802.11A patch antennas and RP-TNC LMR-400 cabling to antennas from AP. No run is over 50'. All antennas are line-of-sight and longest antenna to antenna run is 500'.

Uni? Multi? Whip? Band? Huh? Wha?

WIFI-Filter: My brother and I would like to build a wireless network between our two homes to create a secure network, but we have no idea about radio antennas, signal strength, line-of-sight, etc. The situation: My brother lives ~1900 feet away (about 4 blocks), and about 30 feet above me in altitude. In between are the normal manner of houses, apartments, trees, etc.

We do not have direct line of sight.

What type of antenna and how strong of an amplifier would we have to pair up in order to create a strong, fast wireless link between us? Is this even feasible? Is it even nice, considering we'd have to steal away a whole channel from the spectrum?

Finding a news article

I have a quote from and a link to an AP article published a few months ago. Problem is, searching for the quote on Google gives no relevant results, the link now goes to an error page saying the article was not found, and I can't find the article in a search of the AP archives. What to do?
