My insurance doesn't require referrals to specialists. I've never seen a specialist for a specific problem that wasn't initiated and referred by my doctor. If I want/need to see a specialist for something, does it make sense to see my doctor first and ask for a referral, or find a (random) specialist myself? On the other side, when does a doctor
not give referrals?

I have many of the symptoms of Lupus, and my mother has the genetic defects that cause a number of autoimmune diseases including Celiac and Lupus. How do I go to my doctor and insist I get tested without her laughing me out of the office or convincing me otherwise that I don't have lupus? Also, I might be crazy. Obviously, YANA/MD

Doctor-Filter: I have an appointment scheduled to see a doctor this afternoon about some... sensitive issues. I'm wondering how free I should be with the information I give them, and whether or not certain factors might discourage them from giving me the treatment I feel like I need.

I haven’t been to a doctor in nearly 10 years. 100% of this is due to what I believe is social anxiety. To get a real medical opinion I’d like/need to speak to a doctor. I cannot pickup the phone. (1) Looking for primary care physician recommendations near Columbia, MD and (2) advice on what to say to the person answering the phone.

I'm generally a pretty nervous person. Lately (over the last two months), it's become worse. I jump whenever someone enters the room. I'm quite stressed about everyday things (a disagreement, a social event, my future), and nearly every day my stomach or chest or shoulders ache from these worries. I recognise that my response to this is overblown and irrational, and that maybe I need to seek medical attention. But that's the problem. Can you help me gather the courage to see a doctor?
