We're having a bad (and sudden) ant problem in one of the two bathrooms on the second floor of our home. I don't know what kind of the ants they are or where they are coming from; they are really tiny. They are on the counters, in the shower...the ant traps don't seem to be working. Any suggestions please?

What are these ants on my patio doing? Every day, all day, a few ants will bring little specks of what looks like dirt (could be something else, like decayed ants) and leave it on my patio. They do not make a pile, but spread it out. Every day the sprinklers come on at midnight and wash all that stuff back down towards the ants, and as soon as it is dry they start again. Why are they doing this? I feel like the ants are littering on my patio.
If it helps I live in north Dallas.
Thank you! (I do not think it is them trying to get infected ants out of the nest, but maybe. It was my first thought.)

I need to put a railroad tie post exactly where a red ant colony is. I don't mind that they are there, except that when I stand there, in seconds my shoes are covered with red ants, and a couple minutes, they'd be all over me and the bites hurt. I need them gone for a couple days. I don't want to use insecticide because I don't like such things in general and because it is very near an irrigation ditch. Ant suggestions?

How long did it take for Terro to exterminate the ant population in your apartment/house? I started using Terro's liquid-filled ant baits on Wednesday, September 17. Now, four days later I am still seeing ants trickle in - not as many as before, but enough to make me grit my teeth, and wonder if they're just waiting for the next set of eggs to hatch before they come in droves again. How fast did Terro work for you? Did it take you a few days, a week, etc?

My house has the odd bug problem throughout the year I'm looking for quick and concise solutions that can be made out of house hold products and the best bait to use for these solutions (traps poisons etc).
I get the odd problem inside and outside of my house so ill try to mention them separately. These semi random infestations happen on and off for example one year it was ladybugs and another it was ants but they only repeat the odd time. I know this question may seem broad but im looking for some solutions that can be relatively universal yet i can make them for pennies...

Why are there ants setting up nests in my pot plants?! Every time I water my lavendar, Geraldton Wax (Aust native) and my mint bush, ants start pouring out of the ground in their hundreds. I suspect they are also making the dirt in my pots 'hard' - the water seems to just run off it instead of soaking in. I have tried stabbing the dirt with a chopstick around the plants to airate the soil and get some water down to the roots, but the ants persist. Any help/ suggestions?

As usual, we skipped spring here in Texas and went straight to what my Yankee self considers summer. And with summer in Texas comes bugs -- fire ants, chinch bugs, and all kids of other assortments of creepie crawlies. Normally I'd simply diazinon the entire yard and just fuhgetabout it, but this year -- I have a puppy. A puppy that likes eating digging in dirt and rubbing her nose in it.

Where can I purchase an upscale ant farm? I'm not talking about one of those Uncle Milton's or similar cheap, plastic varieties. I want something a little sturdier and more aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, I don't think I want to spend more than $100.

Carpenter ants. My wife and I are finally winning the war against sugar ants (thanks to a wonderful product called
Terro which works better than our $300 exterminator did), but now we have a carpenter ant infestation. The nest (main nest? will there be multiple nests?) is located in some rotten 2x6 boards framing our raised beds in the garden. However, their current ant highway leads to a vent under the house. Any of you Mefites have carpenter ant experience? What worked? What didn't? Do we need a professional? If they're foraging under the house, does that mean they've probably already set up a colony there?

Damn. All these huge anthills just sprung up in my backyard. I swear, this morning I had one hill, tonight I have about a dozen. Anyone keen on how to deal with that? Also, how would I know if they are or are not fire ants or some other monster flesh-eating or weirdo sort of ant? What is a safe ant? And god, what
isn't? Can you tell by color or size? These are very industrious ants. 11pm and they're still at it.

Are there hygiene problems with eating ants? I ask because I accidentally ate a bunch of ants that were in a box of cereal. I've now thrown out the box and I am not really grossed out by it but it did get me wondering, given that ants live in dirt and carry around pieces of dead insects as part of their chores, whether there are health consequences.
