Oh crap

If this is frass (insect poop), what kind is it? I'm finding it along the edges of our sunroom and on the floor under the route of one of the beams in the center. I don't see any insects or holes. The sunroom is metal beam construction, attached to the house by studded drywall over masonry. frass one and frass two

The ants are winning

My interlock patio is under siege. Ants have moved in and are spreading out, disrupting the sand between the paving stores and generally making a mess of things. I have a spray bottle of ant killing chemical, but I’m playing wack-a-mole here. [more inside]

ANTS low-key everywhere

My apartment has ants. Not in a major, stream-of-ants visible way (although that DEFINITELY happens when it's very dry--and I live in California), just little exploratory black ants. I see them at a rate of maybe 6-8 per day and there's no clearly evident reason for them to be around (for example, a line of them tromped happily along a freshly-bleached bathroom floor). They love or ignore the poison I've given them. My roommate puts boric acid everywhere and they really don't seem to care. What should I do? [more inside]

How to keep ants out of a mailbox?

Whenever the weather is wet, ants invade our mailbox and bring their eggs/larvae. The best solution I've found is just to keep the mailbox open, which totally works. Unfortunately, on wet days it just has to be shut for a couple of hours (like after the mail comes) before they move back in. Is there any way to keep them out of the mailbox without poisoning the whole colony or putting something messy (like baby powder) in the mailbox?

Evicting Many Thousands of Tiny Unwanted Tenants

Last year, we had carpenter ants, and we asked them to leave. This year, the ants are back. I'm prepared to bring in professionals to explain matters to them more forcefully. However, I'm almost more scared of the solution than the problem. Talk to me about safety issues with poisons used to chase the bastards out. [more inside]

Oh my god the ants, help!

We've been battling a carpenter ant infestation unlike any before. In past years we've had NO PROBLEM getting rid of them quickly. This year, they seem to be all over the house, and we're trying all the same tricks with no luck. I don't think we've ever been cleaner and we've been keeping things in airtight containers as we normally do. I have questions about how this could happen and what I can do. [more inside]

Help us block ants from our house

Today we found tiny ants on a kitchen counter and followed their path to a stretch of baseboard. We sprayed it with Sevin & left for work. Don’t know what to expect EOD. We’d prefer to use more natural products, but we’re willing to go nuclear if necessary. (We own the home; no landlord.) How have you handled ants?

Hello Anton. Are you finished with that Mentos? May I have the rest?

Lately (coinciding with extreme hot weather) ants have been attracted to the Mentos chewy dragees I carry around with me. The dragees don't appear (to my eye) to be any different after the ants have had their way with them. Is it safe to eat them? What is attracting the ants to these dragees? Are the ants leaving anything behind that would be unsafe for me to ingest? I have a reasonably robust immune system, so I don't mind a little bit of whatever challenging its integrity, as long as I'm not poisoning myself to a degree I can't handle. I don't want to kill the ants or block their activities beyond making the dragees physically inaccessible. An airtight container is a solution, but I'd rather not have to bother with that - I'd prefer to just share the wealth with the ants, if it's not harming me.

How far from home before an ant is irrevocably lost?

I'm sitting on a park bench, and there are ants crawling on my feet and lower legs. I keep lightly brushing them off. Eventually I get up and walk away. About a hundred metres from the bench, I realize there's still a single ant exploring the leg hairs on my shin. I brush it off, onto the ground. Will it find its way back to its home?

Entomologists, ants are littering on my patio! Why?

What are these ants on my patio doing? Every day, all day, a few ants will bring little specks of what looks like dirt (could be something else, like decayed ants) and leave it on my patio. They do not make a pile, but spread it out. Every day the sprinklers come on at midnight and wash all that stuff back down towards the ants, and as soon as it is dry they start again. Why are they doing this? I feel like the ants are littering on my patio. If it helps I live in north Dallas. Thank you! (I do not think it is them trying to get infected ants out of the nest, but maybe. It was my first thought.)

I need some ants to temporarily move out of their home.

I need to put a railroad tie post exactly where a red ant colony is. I don't mind that they are there, except that when I stand there, in seconds my shoes are covered with red ants, and a couple minutes, they'd be all over me and the bites hurt. I need them gone for a couple days. I don't want to use insecticide because I don't like such things in general and because it is very near an irrigation ditch. Ant suggestions?

How long did it take for Terro to exterminate the ant population in your apartment/house? I started using Terro's liquid-filled ant baits on Wednesday, September 17. Now, four days later I am still seeing ants trickle in - not as many as before, but enough to make me grit my teeth, and wonder if they're just waiting for the next set of eggs to hatch before they come in droves again. How fast did Terro work for you? Did it take you a few days, a week, etc?
