What is the best Anti-virus and firewall apps for a Win 7 PC in 2011?
I just purchased a new Dell PC, and I'd like to set it up with a good anti-virus and firewall program.
The general consensus seems to be that McAfee and Norton are bloated, resource-hoggy, and ineffective. Google turns up plenty of free programs, but credible, CURRENT reviews are hard to find.
Many of the big programs offer "security centers" - huge programs that combine anti-virus, firewall, malware removers, and phishing protection. Some of this seems necessary, others not-so-much.
Also, Win 7 has a firewall built-in; since I'm not remotely a security expert - I have no idea if this is sufficient, or I need a 3rd party app on top (or instead of it).
So, what's a conscientious but non-expert Windows user to do?
(I know, I know - get a Mac. Which I've done - I LOVE my iMac. But I ALSO need a PC for work...)

I bought a new laptop today,
an inexpensive Compaq. I've not opened the box yet, don't want to run the thing without a decent anti-virus anti-malware etc and etc, on the machine and operative -- I figure I'll use my existing puter to download the latest AVG onto a USB stick and install it onto the Compaq before getting online. Also intend to run
Decrapifer software and also
CCleaner to get all the gunk off the machine that I can. Question: What else do I need to do to fire up this Windows 7 machine, if anything? Also -- once cleaned up, I'd like to image the drive to a USB drive I've got, that USB drive came with proprietary software and I'm sure that'd be fine, but do you have any preference as to what drive imaging (freeware) software to use?

Virus Protection at a discount? I use Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 (or internet security in past years) and it's usually $60. However this time of year it is only $10-$20. I currently have 189 days left on my current subscription. Can I buy another copy of Kaspersky 2010 now and install it in 190 days and get another year of service or do I have to buy a 2011 version next year?

I need your help to settle a debate. Could you suggest the safest antivirus setup, within the confines of Windows XP and a wireless internet connection, with the
least bloat,
and provide the statistics to prove it?
I need more than simple AV comparatives. I need stats on the virtues of Firefox versus IE, on using two function-differentiated user accounts (admin versus everyday, with the 'everyday' account having no admin privileges), etc. Can you help?
