I have a cavity and my dentist prescribed me a week of antibiotics to take every 6 hours to keep it from getting worse. I ran out of the antibiotics last week. [more inside]
I always thought that it was a bad idea to stop an antibiotic before the full course is finished, both because it can make you sick again and because of antibiotic resistance. But I just spent the last couple of days in the hospital and the doctor didn't continue my prescription (I only took a couple of doses, yesterday). [more inside]
I have what I believe is a nickel allergy (earrings cause my pierced ears to "weep"). I've read that some antibiotics contain nickel, and I'd like to avoid those. But I'm having difficulty finding out which antibiotics contain nickel.
Hi, I've read similar questions on here before but I just want to know if anyone has any updated information or is in a similar situation and can help with my sinus/tiredness issues. [more inside]
I was recently diagnosed with a UTI at an urgent care clinic. The PA (I did not see an MD or NP) prescribed a ten-day course of cipro to treat it (500mg, twice a day, for 10 days). That seems excessive to me (though I will take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed). Is such a long course of antibiotics commonly prescribed for UTIs? [more inside]
You are not my dentist, oral surgeon, or travel agent: can an extraction or root canal be delayed a week or two if the active infection has temporarily been resolved through a short (10 day) course of antibiotics? [more inside]
In London for a couple weeks. New & painful sore throat. Does anyone routinely test for bacterial strep here? [more inside]
I have this problem: every time I'm stressed and the temperature changes, I start to get sick. Not really sick - just a sore throat and chest pain and a general feeling of being unwell. But then I get really sick - the sore throat disappears, I get feverish, I'm exhausted and I cough up tons of nasty mucus, and I am basically not functional at all. [more inside]
I am on antibiotics for a UTI. My vulva feels itchy and uncomfortable, but it isn't swollen or red, and I have no discharge. Could this be thrush? Should I self-medicate with Canesten or wait until I can see my GP after the bank holiday weekend (Tuesday at the earliest, in reality later)? [more inside]
I have an appointment with a clinic to get some vaccinations before a two-week trip to India. My initial chat with the nurse made me feel like she was maybe pushing the "better safe than sorry" angle a bit, so I'm looking for some other opinions and links to good resources for making these decisions on my own. Does anyone have any experience with persistent, unexplained joint pain in multiple joints? [more inside]
I'm on a course of antibiotics, so I'd like to begin re-colonizing myself with some helpful gut flora. Totally willing to get whatever from wherever; there are Whole Foods and various hippie stores (no slight intended) around where I can purchase food or pills, if I need something not available at a mainstream big box retailer or grocery store. Chronic cough filter: YANMD, and I am being treated by an ENT, but please, if you have any experience in annoying throat tickles that cause coughing to the point where you can't sleep, take a moment to read my long story and see if you can help me advise my ENT where to "look." [more inside]
I have to take 2000mg of Amoxicillin before I visit the dentist -- is that a large dose? Would it muck with the balance of good bacteria in my body? Just curious, thanks!

Antibiotics filter: A few months ago, I took Clindomycin for a tooth infection. One of the potential side effects is Clostridium difficil, a type of colitis. Now I am sick and worried that it might be connected to the Clindomycin. Should I be worried and go to the doctor? Gross symptoms inside. [more inside]

I was prescribed a shot (some broadspectrum antibiotic that hurt really bad) and pills: 500mg Keflex 4x/day for 10 days. This was to treat a pubic boil. My compliance has sucked to say the least. I try hard to remember but I'm not doing well with it. I've taken 11 pills out of 40. I should have taken 35 pills by now. Am I hurting myself? Should I continue taking them? I have a message into my doc to fess up to my slackitude.

I had a tooth extracted last week and despite being on antibiotics for four days, it's infected, and the infection has spread, making it painful to swallow. The solution: a different antibiotic has been prescribed. I don't like antibiotics, so my question is: what would happen if I just didn't take the damn things, took the painkillers, braved it out and waited for my body to handle it alone? Would that just be stupid? I appreciate that it's probably hard to advise without specific details, but any comments welcome.
YANAD etcetc but I've had a nasty cough for 3 weeks. Finally I went to the doctor. After a 4 minute auscultation, he said I have bronchitis and he prescribed antibiotics. [more inside]

I'm going to the South Pacific to do research for six months (American Samoa, Fiji and Tokelau). I'm getting the standard vaccinations and will take a supply of my normal prescriptions. In addition, I plan to take a supply of broad spectrum antibiotics. What else should I ask my doctor for? What other medications should I take with me?

I'm currently on a low carbohydrate weight loss diet, I am in a mild state of ketosis. I have been losing weight at a moderate pace and doing well. I just started taking antibiotics (500 mg of amoxicillin 3 times daily for one week) in preparation for a root canal I'm having next tuesday. Multiple sources on the internet are telling me that taking antibiotics can stall weight loss. Is this true? I really don't understand how this would work. I really hope it's not!
I'm getting all four of my impacted wisdom teeth out tomorrow. In a study done in 2007, one dose of pre-op antibiotics has been shown to lower infection rates by 50%, and might do more good than several days of antibiotics post-op. My oral surgeon's office apparently does not follow that practice. Is there any danger in me taking one of the doses of amoxicillin that has already been prescribed for this procedure the night before? [more inside]
Is there a charity that accepts unexpired antibiotics that are still sealed in their little blister-packs? I have 16 Keflex pills left over from a misdiagnosis and would love to find an organization that donates meds to the needy.

Should I be worried about this? I went to the doctor this morning to get checked out for cold/flu symptoms; I didn't think it was serious -- I just wanted to check that I didn't have H1N1, but the doctor told me that the treatment I'd been getting for prostatitis was "highly unusual for someone in their 20s", and he said I should immediately stop taking the antibiotic I'm on (Septra/Bactrim) because I might be having an allergic reaction to it, or possibly an autoimmune reaction.
