Foot guy is sending me to spine guy. What now?

I saw a foot and ankle ortho guy to address bilateral neuropathy, a persistent rash, and excruciating pain that radiates from the outer foot up to my inner knee. (I do not have diabetes.) Dr. Foot & Ankle says all is (mostly) well with the foot and ankle, so he's sending me to Dr. Spine. Is this really the right guy to see next? [more inside]

Ankle injury; help me come up with a taxing cross-training program.

I was recently diagnosed with a tibial stress fracture. I'd like to keep up my aerobic fitness during the 6-8 weeks the doctor said I wouldn't be able to run, but everything I have tried (cycling, aqua running) is not giving me a workout even remotely comparable to that of my running sessions. Please come up with some neato workouts I could try which don't stress the ankle, so I can run strong post-rehab. Details inside. [more inside]

Do you know any cutting edge data on treating a sprained ankle?

I know "PRICE" Protect, Rest, Ice, Elevate, are there any other things that can help immediately after a sprained ankle, or in the days/weeks after? Are there any scientific studies or journal articles you can link me that show any different or other treatments? I'd like to do anything I can to help healing (foods, human growth hormone, drugs, needles, therapies, anything). By the way,I know I can Ice for 20 minutes, every hour (the most aggressive recommendation I've heard), but if I can take it, can I ice for longer, more often? Coincidentally I have been doing endurance Ice bath immersion lately, so I know I can withstand much longer in an ice bath (70 minutes in 5 degree Celsius water) so wouldn't that be better than 20 minutes every hour?

Feelin' no pain! But definitely injured-- good thing or bad thing?

YANMD, I know... BUT, sometime between yesterday night and the day before, I definitely injured my ankle. I noticed it feeling a little weird earlier in the day, but was rushing around traveling, so didn't notice until I got to my destination that it's super swollen on the outside right behind the ankle bone. Googling makes me think I've injured my peroneal tendon (I was playing around on a slackline the night before so I must have rolled it?), but the catch is that it doesn't hurt. Part of the outside of my ankle is numb to the touch, and I've been taking ibuprofen to keep the swelling down, but I'm otherwise unsure of what to do as pain is usually my signal for whether to stay off of something or not. For example: I usually run around 8 miles 3x/week-- can I do that still? Or am I tempting disaster? I've never sprained an ankle or injured them in any other way, so I am not even sure how long to rest it or whether to elevate it or what. Suggestions?

How to baby an injury for a newbie runner?

I'm midway through a 13-week beginner's running program. Today was supposed to be a run day for me, but I noticed a little twinge in my ankle last night, and the soreness has persisted. Skipped the run for today, but I'm wondering how long I should rest the ankle before attempting to run again? Spent the day reading about high ankle sprains and freaking myself out, need some advice from experienced runners. [more inside]

Med mystery #436: what does the following pattern of symptoms suggest?

What started as an overuse injury has bloomed into a shape-shifting pain octopus, over two and a bit years. I’m not sure which pains mean what, or what to emphasize with my rheumatologist. (Maybe this is about me and maybe it isn’t, but I’ll say it’s me for the purposes of this hypothetical question, and nobody’s my doctor, either.) [more inside]

It's big and it's standing at attention

Broken tibia & fibula, 3.5 months ago, clean snap. I got an intramedullary rod in the tibia, screws at the ankle and knee, and absolutely no recommendations for PT other than some exercises to do at home from the doctor. Everything else seems to have healed well enough, but - my big toe ain't movin', and it's stuck in permanent "up". [more inside]

Looking for an ankle brace

That's it. I've had it. My delicate ballerina ankles get sprained if I step on a piece of string the wrong way. I just sprained the right one again today and enough is enough. I'm going to try to put a plan into action that I thought about a couple years ago. I want to get an ankle brace, maybe even custom-made, that I can wear regularly to prevent this from happening so much. [more inside]
