Career-building resources in animal rescue available in DFW

Looking for an tips, contacts, experiences to pass on to a Dallas/FW resident interested in animal rescue. Along with a real (but shallow) birthday gift I'd like to pass along something to inspire or educate my sister about a field she's interested in. She calls it animal rescue. I think she means small domestic animals, but I'd broaden it to any kind of wildlife, as she likes animals in general. At this point she needs a lot of encouragement and inspiration and I suspect she's vague on the actual details, so I'm looking for:

contacts that would be interested in talking to someone like her
upcoming events, fairs, or job fairs
experiences/places/animal reserves I could buy her a pass to
tips on good programs for someone with no college experience
Good volunteer hookups
Nonfiction but engaging books in the discipline
Etc.

Hopefully this conveys the idea appropriately. I'm willing to further research any and all ideas, so please, unload on me. Thank you in advance!

(And for the record, she's already approached me previously because she hoped my general biology background would help, but I had nothing then, but I know my help won't be turned down).

Save this dog!

Help me help this dog. My friend and I just found a female pit bull tied up and abandoned in Mt. Prospect Park. This is in Brooklyn, NY. I'm not allowed to have pets, and he has two already and can't take another. She's very sweet, and our guess is that she was a breeding dog and the owner abandoned her when she outlived her usefulness. We've waited a couple of hours with her, so I'm pretty sure at this point nobody is coming to get her.

A couple of people in the park told us not to take her to the ASPCA, as they will put down all pit bulls. Is this true? If so, does anyone have a recommendation for another shelter in Brooklyn or one of the other boroughs?

I'm about to leave for work but will be checking back here as soon as I arrive. My friend is still in the park with the dog, and he will probably be taking her home temporarily while we try to figure out what to do.

Thanks for your help!

Stop! Puppy time?

Please, please help me consider my options with some lovely stray puppies I found. About a week ago, I found four gorgeous stray beagle/terrier mix puppies in the Knoxville, TN area. They are absolutely adorable, sweet and loving, not very big, and have already had their first round of shots... you would think no problem finding homes, right?

Well, not so much. After contacting everyone I know, every no-kill shelter in the area, every rescue in the area, and at one point simply asking total strangers if they could take a puppy, I cannot find a single home for any of these dogs. I really, really do not want to take these little guys to shelter that euthanizes their animals, as I have already called around and everyone is full up, meaning that if I took them in they would be euthanized immediately. These are exceptional dogs, tractable and loving, and I cannot imagine putting them down.

Due to a combination of circumstances, I am no longer able to keep them myself until I find them homes. In fact, I can't even keep them temporarily in my yard (for their own safety.) I have, as far as I can tell, run out of options. Do you clever MeFites have any suggestions as far as something I can try?

Beagle and Chips to go please.

My US-born dog has a non-ISO compliant microchip (24pethealth). She's just moved to the UK. If she gets lost there, will the RSPCA etc be able to read her chip, or should we get her a new one?

If we need a new one, what happens to the old one? Will this cause complications & confusion? More info: when she travelled to the UK under the PETS scheme, we supplied our own non-ISO scanner, so they would let her in.

While we can register her chip number with PetID, the Kennel Club's national registry, I don't know if pet rescue orgs can read non-ISO chips.

Any advice please?

Emotional stages of animal volunteering.

I'm looking for a blog post about four stages of animal shelter volunteers. I thought I saw it on MetaFilter recently, but my GoogleFu is failing me. It talked about the four stages people in the animal shelter volunteer business go through from excitement through burnout. I believe it's a fairly recent blog article, but it may be an older one that was referenced more recently on a shelter worker blog. It looked like it could be applicable to a lot of volunteer work. General comments about working as an animal shelter volunteer would also be helpful, as my wife is considering doing so.

Homeward Bound III: The Incredible Journey (Of Cheapskates)

I saved a puppy from certain death. Now I need help getting home for the holidays. Is it possible and cost-effective to travel from Baltimore, MD to Kalamazoo, MI using only public transportation? Quick summary: I found a puppy, couldn't keep her, she ended up in Animal Control, I found someone to adopt her, but it took $310 to save the puppy from being put down so she could go her new home. This leaves me with approximately $200 to work with to get myself from Baltimore to Kalamazoo, leaving around the 23rd (minus a few days is OK) and coming back around January 6th (again, plus or minus a few days). Airplane tickets are prohibitively expensive, as are Greyhound and Amtrak.

A friend's success at traveling from Baltimore to New York City using Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey public transportation has inspired me. Perhaps I could create some kind of crazy multi-state bus, subway, and light rail itinerary that would get me where I need to go, or at least to Ann Arbor where I could catch a ride. But how? Where do I begin? Has anyone had experience doing this?
