A friend of mine has given me their old Samsung Galaxy S3. Yay! It is locked and the carrier won't unlock it without forcing a fee to be paid. Boo! [more inside]
I'm interested in hiring a developer to build a native Android app. Before anyone gets nervous, I am a fairly experienced in dealing with technical people and I already built the iPhone version of this app myself. Because of time constraints I am choosing not to build the Android myself, there would be too much of a learning curve because I have never done it before. I would be able to provide the developer a designed comp of every single screen. [more inside]
Is there some kind of personal dental record / tooth history app, or even a way of marking comments on tooth diagrams, for either major tablet OS? [more inside]

I have a new-old Droid 3 (bought new, only started using it recently) and it's not holding a charge very long, even when I'm not actively doing anything with it (it can drop from 100% to 70% over night). I looked at its battery usage, and the bundled apps that I didn't want or use were using a lot of battery (YouTube was the worst, at 27%). Should I try some cellphone management apps (examples), get a new battery, root it to uninstall bundled apps I don't want or need, or root it to run a custom OS? [more inside]
1) What is your podcast management strategy? I need a system that works better than what I'm doing now. 2) Is there an app that will let me organize/subscribe to podcasts or create playlists on my Mac and then sync that with my Android? [more inside]
I love swiping around on my Android phone; the chance to swipe around on my keyboard to write an email or text makes me surprisingly glad. What are some good games (and other apps?) that make the act of swiping and dragging a pleasure? Some examples: Alcazar and LYNE have been great games for me because they supported smooth, convoluted drags, and Threes has been too because of its smooth swipes. In contrast, the clunkyness of the dragging in Trainyard has been a turn-off. While a good challenge is important, fluidity is key.
Is there an Android app or web app that will show the latest image from a Flickr album or Dropbox folder? [more inside]
We spend a few months in Italy each year, and duplicate our lives from Australia over there. Last year we purchased a second-hand car, and find it really useful to use a GPS for navigation. Our TelCo also gave us two Samsung Note 3 Android Tablets. We have smartphones and iPads, and are hoping to use the android tablet in the vehicle for navigation when required. Would Google Maps be the best? There is the provision for SIM cards in the Samsung, however I would probably prefer to link it to a portable hotspot if needed. PREFERABLY a navigation app for Italy which works well off-line. Any suggestions? TIA
Back in '93, Disney had a game for DOS called Coaster. You get a track editor, build and ride it in 3D, then it gets rated by some riders. Is there anything close to something like this in terms of game play for Android that's available now? Nicer graphics would be a plus.

I want a new Android phone. I need to have it in my hands on June 5, 2015. I will be buying it out-of-pocket (no contract or subsidy) and using it on T-Mobile. My only requirements are 1) faster / more responsive than my Nexus 5 and 2) better battery life than my Nexus 5. I'm overwhelmed by the options. Which phones should I be looking at? [more inside]

I use an Android phone as my main audio player (both music and podcasts). I'd like to use it to play audio wirelessly over my home theater system. The Bluetooth receiver I got for this isn't cutting it. What's the best way to do this? [more inside]
I opened this (NSFW) YouTube video yesterday and before it played there was an ad made by Android that goes on for about 7 minutes basically imploring you to hit 'Skip Ad', it's hilarious and I would love to find the actual link to the video. [more inside]

I don't think there's any way to uninstall the Google Photo bloatware on my unrooted Android phone, which is super-annoying. I've turned off "upload to Google+" but am angsty that one day, after an update or whatever, it might re-default to upload. I don't want Google saving copies of my stuff, and I am not reassured by their help materials, which talk about me "not seeing" the images anymore if I delete them. That's not the same as Google not having them, which is what I'm trying to avoid. Without rooting my phone, is there a way I can delete the app, or stop it from storing my stuff? [more inside]
I recently bought a new Alcatel One Touch 7 Tab, running Jelly Bean. It has a lot of problems, often it takes several seconds to respond, apps freeze, it has graphical issues with some games that aren't necessarily new, some apps don't even run, and it hangs when going from one app to another. I've been playing a computer game called Puzzle & Dragons where you "fight" monsters by moving jewels around on a grid to create rows of three or more. I want to know if there's any way to work out a good series of moves other than by brute force. Details below: [more inside]
I have a Galaxy 3s. I've been using the Google Play music app to listen to music but using the Windows Media Player to rip CDs and sync to my phone. I've been storing music on my SD card. The music is there on my phone but the app doesn't seem to find it when I search for the name. I am sad because those vital tunes are not available while i'm on the go! [more inside]

I've had an iPhone for as long as I've had a smart phone but I don't like certain things about it (The inability to replace the battery yourself and not being able to add on storage size) which is why I'm considering switching to a Samsung android phone. I'm just concerned that I won't like it because I'm so used to the iPhone. I currently own all things Apple (MacBook, iPad, iPod) and am used to iTunes. Is it worth it to switch to a Samsung android phone or should I just buy the new iPhone 6? How's the learning curve on switching to an android phone when you've always used an iPhone?
I've been using android phones for the past three years. I haven't bought a single app from Google Play store. I'm interested in knowing if there are any paid android apps that would make my life easier.

Hi everyone! For my job, I'm transitioning from Mac to Linux (trying Ubuntu) on my laptop and using an Android phone (CyanogenMod). I'm a little new to all this. For work and for play I read and write just an insane amount of text. I write papers and nonfiction research pieces and novels and thousands of notes. I read epubs and mobis and piles o' PDFs and many many online articles. What are your favorite apps and programs for reading, writing, editing, saving, and searching/storing text on these platforms? I'm planning my first (and hopefully not last) international vacation and I'd like to get a smartphone for traveling that can be used on a prepaid basis for both voice and data. When not traveling it will not be used as a phone, although I'd still like it to perform double duty as a mp3/move player at home. Home is the united states and travel will be to Iceland (and beyond). [more inside]
I've got a refurb ASUS ME173x tablet here, that I bought to give my one of my kids for Christmas. It's actually one of four identical tablets that we bought for our four (non-identical) kids. I've updated three of them to Android 4.2.2, per the notification that popped up on each. This last one, though, seems to be hung up on the actual installation. [more inside]
I'm trying to e-mail a couple of .mp4 videos to my girlfriend's LG G3 Android phone. The first one worked fine, but both of my attempts of the second video are apparently an "unsupported file type." I encoded the videos myself from QuickTime .mov source videos using Avidemux, and I'm at a loss as to why one works but the others don't. (technical info inside) [more inside]

My loyalties are firmly in the Apple camp. I've owned many iPhones, iPads and various Macs. However, I know nothing about Android devices... and it's about time I learn. I'm a self proclaimed tech geek for pity's sake, but yet I am woefully ignorant about all things Android. I want to change this! [more inside]
I have been gifted a Samsung Gear Live, and in the process of struggling to put a backpack on over a heavy winter jacket, I ripped off one of the watch bands. The band itself is fine, but the metal post or whatever that attaches it to the watch face is bent. Can I buy just the post somewhere? [more inside]

I'm looking to buy a sub-$200 tablet primarily to play Hearthstone and watch Netflix. I'm finding it confusing to to pick out the best quality tablet in this price range that will run Hearthstone well, do you have a suggestion? I am open to Windows, Android, or Apple. If I understand correctly, the Hearthstone app is not out for Android yet but it should be available soon.

I have been a happy user of Tmobile for a few years, using their $10/(3 month) minimal service. Sadly, my Nokia N900 has bit the dust, and I must replace it. What are the best news/opinions about Android in terms of quality of writing and analysis? I'm after sites that post relatively infrequently, but tend to produce high quality stuff when they do post: the Android equivalent of sites like MacStories, Daring Fireball, and Six Colors. (I know far more about iOS than I do Android, but should really know about both.)
My wife's Nexus 4 has died (due to an accident) and we are looking for a replacement. The Nexus 5 would be the obvious choice but is out of stock in the Play store (and given that the Nexus 6 has been announced may not be coming back). What should she get? [more inside]
Family members have gotten an Android tablet for my 97-year-old grandmother. Please suggest some ways to make the tablet as friendly and easy to use as possible for someone who has computer experience, but who can be pessimistic about learning new things and can get frustrated with people trying to teach her. We're particularly interested in tablet settings and also methods for instructing her in its use, but also open to hearing about tutorials or apps that might make her experience smoother. I'm overseas, so I'll be passing along ideas to my dad. [more inside]

I am considering the purchase of an android tv box but I have no idea how many gb of my 100 gb/month allotment would be used up on my internet service plan (using DSL modem). If for example, I was watching tv up to 3 hours daily would this exceed the 100 gb monthly limit? Second question - is there anyone using the magic box from redrhino entertainment - is it worth the premium price of a regular quad core box?
