I'm creating a simple mobile app for a class project. What is the quickest and easiest way to develop a "proof of concept" or prototype for someone with limited technical skills?

Regarding the Android Market, what apps do people think are missing?
I'm teaching myself a little Android programming. I'll try upload eventually a free app or two hopefully that the Marketplace doesn't already have a bunch of.

Does it make sense to block off a few months to develop the skills needed to pursue a modest career/business developing indie games and mobile apps for Android, or am I better off just getting an entry-level job at a call center and make a
decent amount of money doing sales or tech support?

I recently bought an LG Optimus V running Android 2.2 Are there any great tutorials that are easy to understand in the field of Android programming? In other words, I want to get up and running and in the most painless and comprehensible way possible.

I want an Android app that makes, edits, and manages lists, and haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. Say I want to write my own program. Say also that I don't have any programming experience, and no programming knowledge beyond the basic concepts. What sort of steps would I have to take and what sort of timeline would I be looking at before I produce something useable?

I'm teaching myself to program. I learned the basics with Ruby on Rails, and I'm now coding in Python and Javascript, but I want to try an Android app, and that requires that I use Java. Going from Ruby to Python to Javascript was relatively painless, but I feel like I'm starting all over looking at Java code. Does anyone have any tips for going from scripted languages to Java? Or any really great tutorials for getting started in Java? Or any great tutorials for beginning programmers for Android?
