I'm in a new place, and my daughter just pushed the privacy lock on the bathroom door before closing it (she is outside the bathroom, thankfully). With most of these knobs you can just push something through the hole to pop it, but that is not working. There are no keys over the doorframe. There are no exposed screws on this side of the knob. The door hinges are on the other side of the door. Please help! [more inside]

I (female) grew up in a house as the only girl with multiple brothers. My mother began putting me on diets at age 8, before I'd ever shown any signs of having weight issues. I was a normal 8 yr old girl, but not as scrawny as my brothers. From the diets she'd always put me on (this was the 80's, for cultural reference), it began a terrible cycle of me failing the diets and not ever being able to do enough to make her stop policing what I ate. I'm just now coming to the conclusion that I may never have had an issue with food / being overweight if my mom had not forced her insecurities on to me. Longer explanation included. Advice/perspective/fellow war stories appreciated. [more inside]
Hi MeFi, I recently upgraded my PC and snagged an i7 4790k / 4.00Ghz with 30GB of RAM. Much to my disappointment, I noticed that my new sound-card from Bang & Olufsen is super quiet and nowhere as loud as my previous Beats card that came bundled with my older HP machine. I record via Ableton Live/Reason and really miss the rich sound I used to get with Beats and no longer get with Bang & Olufsen. What are my options besides replacing the Sound-Card all together? Are there any headphone amplifiers for PC's that will give me more volume? Is there a stand-alone hardware I can buy and run via USB that will allow for richer sound? Thanks for your tips!
Some states provide zero funding to their public radio stations (either directly or via state education funds like, to colleges) while others give a lot (last year, Georgia gave public radio almost 15-million dollars). Who decides, the legislature or the voters, whether or not to support public radio in a state?
The day after drinking (whether that be 2-3 beers, to heavy binge drinking), I very easily get pins and needles in my hands and legs. That's not to say they just occur in my natural state -- it's more like when my arms or legs are in a compromised / bent position. [more inside]

The US military follows a time honored tradition of retiring and destroying damaged US flags. That protocol is outlined in US Code, Title 4, Chapter 1 which (link) outlines the disposing of such flags in a manner that shows respect for the flag and the service it has provided. Yet, I frequently see people flying very damaged flags in very prominent locations. [more inside]

The question is about the pronunciation of /æ/ and /e/, such as in Brad and bread, expansive and expensive, man and men, bad and bed, pat and pet, flash and flesh, sad and said, had and head, etc. I asked local Americans about the differences, listened to Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNL5BmWQGiI) videos for the difference, but I still did not quite get it. It is understandable that dialects would lead to difference as well; so in British English pronunciation, I probably caught the difference; but in the Mid-western dialects, e.g., Minnesota, these two sounds are so similar that I can never succeed in distinguishing them without a context. So the question is to ask: 1. What is the difference between /æ/ and /e/ in your US dialects? 2. What is the difference between /æ/ and /e/ in Mid-western dialects? An answer with a video or audio information would be very helpful I guess.
I am going to start my own interpretation and translation coorperation. I have the money, time and people to do it. But I really have limited information about starting this business. So I really need a lot of advice about it.I live in columbus and going to start it here. What license do I need to get to start the cooperation? What kinds of certificates should my interpreters get, and how can they get those certificates, like medical interprter's certificate, court interpreters's certificate? I am willing to pay for the necessary training and certification for the interpreters who are going to work in the cooperation. [more inside]

If I eat high fat protein a.m. I immediately am drained and sleep 2 hours. The longer it takes to digest food, the more brain dead I am and the more tired. I seem to always crave carbs and sugar/fruit but this makes me worse. I walk and tire easily. I get bad indigestion with fat. I am sooo constipated and hardly pee. It takes me all day to actually "wake up" and then I can eat OK and have energy. I have not been absorbing nutrients and have aged facially a lot. I am 65. I cannot lose weight. I get shivering attacks, feel "fluey" croaky voice. I do have gallstones and get pain in my right side. It feels as if everything is packing up slowly. I have fatty liver disease. In November all bloods were OK. including thyroid. I am not detoxing my drugs quick enough. [more inside]
I am from China and my first language is Mandarin Chinese. I also speak excellent English. My SO is an American. I just moved to Austin,TX, USA. I am trying to become an interpreter for Mandarin/English. I have a bachelor's degree in English language from my university in China and I worked as a full time interpreter in a UN wetland protection project in china in 2014. Could you please help me find more info (websites, books etc.) about how to get certified as an interpreter and a translator between Chinese and English in Austin? How and where can I find work? Thanks

Hi MeFi, I was on the receiving end of a car accident which occurred last week during rush-hour. I was traveling home from work on a very busy Charlestown Ave when I got had another car smash into mine. I had a bad case of whiplash and went sorta blank for a second but after I came out of the car I noticed a busted BMW behind with a driver still sitting there. The girl from the second car fled the scene. My suspicion was that she didn't have a license or didn't own the car or both. So in short, BMW (Car A) > smashes into grey vehicle with (Car B) which in turn smashes into me (Car C). My insurance adjustor is saying this is a complicated case because of how 'many impacts' I felt or heard. What the hell does this even mean? It felt like someone hit me with a hammer. He said the first party which caused the scene hasn't yet accepted responsibility and they have 30 days to do it or not. I'm sorta left broken and had two trips to ER and two MRIs taken which showed I have an upper disc injury in neck and shoulders. The back side of my car is completely damaged with me being unable to shut my trunk. It is still drivable but it looks like hell. I don't want to dish out $500 for a rental since I'm already drowning in bills. Insurance is telling me that I can't get reimbursed for the rental until someone accepts responsibility. Is this how it usually goes with insurance companies in USA? I'm flabbergasted. Should I get an attorney?

Spread sheet contains 4 columns. Submitals, interviews, jobs and a total sum column of the prior three cells mentioned. The trick is, a submital is worth 1 point, a intrerview 3 points, a job 5 points. But the value must be 1 each in its respective column, and the sum column must contain the total number of points. How would you format a sheet to achieve this.

I have a vague recollection of a very old, black and white cartoon about a huge cat that goes to a junk yard and searches for a mouse who lives in a house (I think). The cat kind of looks like Felix (or so I remember). There is a lot of gold in the episode (for reasons I can't seem to explain). The second cartoon is also old (probably 70s animation) and is about a boy who has these surreal adventures. I remember him riding his little car all over the place and in one scene, he is walking on a tight rope. There is also an umbrella scene. And I think it rains at one point. I believe the cartoon was British, but I'm not sure.

I just broke my point and shoot camera and want to replace it with something more modern. I have a 4GB eye-if SD card that I configured to auto-upload to my online photo storage for me, but I'd like to find a camera that has this feature built in. A quick google (an 4 hours later), it doesn't seem like I can find such a camera -- is my google searching rusty, or is the camera market missing "automatic, easy picture upload" as a built in feature? I don't want to use my eye-if anymore. Any suggestions for a camera that does it all?
I have just finished a college course in business English. I did well, but I want to be able to look at parts of speech in a sentence and understand enough to know for sure why I am using who or whom or when to choose subjective or objective pronouns. (Example: Do you think it was THEY who left the door unlocked overnight?) My textbook spent more time telling you to substitute he or him for who or whom, but I wanted to be able to understand what part of speech was responsible for the choice. What is the best college level or above textbook to teach me this? Thank you in advance.

Hi all, I recently started the F-Factor diet For the first two weeks carbs are limited to fiber crackers, all bran, 0% greek yogurt, and one piece of fruit a day. No beans or starchy vegetables. You are allowed a small amount of fat (like a few slices of avocado, or a few peanuts, or a couple teaspoons of oil. Other than that you can have a lot of lean protein (fish, turkey, egg whites, skinless chicken, pork, light cheese, lean beef with fat removed etc.) and vegetables. Unfortunately I'm going away to a cabin this weekend and everyone else will be drinking like fishes and eating crazy fattening food. What are some things that I can make with lean protein and vegetables (and maybe the small amount of fat I'm allowed) that would be tolerable if not delicious. I will have access to a very basic kitchen (nothing fancy but at least a refrigerator, oven and stove). Thanks!
I am looking for a succinct synapses of the history of international Maternal and Child Health (MCH) initiatives since it first became an issue until the present which would be, I think, the Millennium Development Goals?
