How can I be a well-informed UK voter?

I'm a new UK citizen, and I'd like to stay informed so that I can vote wisely (not just this week but in all elections to come.) Unfortunately, a lot of political coverage seems to focus on "Will talking about this policy help the party win?" while I'm more interested in "Will implementing this policy be good for the country?" So, what podcasts, Twitter feeds, or other resources tend to offer thoughtful, in-depth analysis of different party's positions on various issues? (I'm a big fan of the BBC's "Analysis" podcast, to give an idea of what I'm looking for.") [more inside]

Software for computing the emotional intensity of messages?

Remember around 2000 when the Eudora e-mail program came with Moodwatch, which claimed to find out how "hot" your messages were running by looking for swear words (and maybe sarcasm, I'm not sure?) I wonder, is there free or open source software somewhere that has done the same thing? Or has anyone reverse-engineered Moodwatch to figure out how it works?

Extracting Data from SEC's EDGAR system: How (w/o XBRL)

Trying to run some value-investing analyses, and running into a huge roadblock. I want to extract SEC filings (via the EDGAR database) on a daily basis and have the data inserted into a MySQL database. I'm basically looking at forms 10-Q, 10-k, DEF-14a, and forms 3, 4, and 5. After the initial set-up, I'd only need to d/l forms that have changed (via change of timestamp, I'm assuming). [more inside]

Seeking Truth Out of Fiction

Inspired by this post on the blue, I was wondering -- what are some examples of articles/blog posts where someone analyzed (presumably with tongue-in-cheek) a minor part of a fictional world in a serious way that treats the subject matter as truth, not fictional? [more inside]

Salary Vs experience analysis

Need to do a simple analysis around pay and experience fairness. Example: Two project managers managing exactly same kind of projects and have similar performance levels: PM 1 -> Pay $130,000 ; Experience 15 years; PM2-> Pay $80,000 ; Experience 3 years; I want a mathematical way of analyzing if the person getting paid $80,000 is being under payed. Now I know there are industry standards and charts available. I want to do something that may not be perfect but gives a sense. How much weight should be given to experience and can this be factored in mathematically? Please dont get hung up on accuracy. I want a logical analysis method that does not need to be entirely accurate. Also, where can I find industry charts comparing pay and experience

Can I get anything useful out of my savings history?

As a result of my method for saving money, I've ended up with a huge excel spreadsheet for the last 4 years detailing how much I've put in and taken out of my savings account.
