Home buying tools, maps, data crunching etc.

Glorious SO and I plan to buy a home in the next 18-30 months. I'd like to line up all the best tools, maps, and data to keep track of homes we've seen, neighborhoods and towns we'd consider, flood maps, commute times, train lines--really anything and everything that could inform this decision. Yes, yes, friends, colleagues and a good agent are great resources--but we want tools at this point! [more inside]

Career Development Suggestions for making sense of and displaying data

I currently work for a growing company doing various social media marketing for small businesses. I have been finding that I receive a lot of satisfaction doing activities related to what I learned in library school. I enjoy collecting, organizing, and providing data and information for our internal staff and making things approachable. One weakness I see is that we are especially data rich and insight poor with social media. I would like to know if there are any recommended programs for data mining or statistical analysis? Is there a better/faster way to operationalize the coding of messy text data?

I'm trying to tag and code about 4000+ unique paragraphs of data. These are opinion responses to two similar questions. I manually went through the first 4000 responses and it took weeks using Google Refine. I'm wondering if there's a way to operationalize this to be a bit easier and less time consuming? [more inside]

Area manager territories and regions

We have five area managers who look after a number of sites each (about 10) spread throughout the UK. How can I visually represent this on a map that shows the illogical (or logical) spread of their site distribution (from a distance perspective) Sub comment: I'd also like to be able to esimate the distances travelled if they visit each site x days per year and show the most efficient site per manager. Suggestions for this would be great too.

How do I automagically display trending of complex data?

I need some suggestions for data analysis and displaying trending information. At the moment I'm doing this with a huge amount of Excel pivote tables. The goal is to highlight increasing trends and top hitters in some sort of (semi)automated way. The catch is that the data is pretty deep. For example, say I have a metric for "server rebooted for unknown reason"(which, by the way, is one of 50 things measured)...I'd like to also see the break down by server type and then by, say, location and then to see it by week. How do I stop XP from thinking this old program is newly installed?

Stupid annoying WinXP question. I installed an older program I use for data analysis in my lab. Every time I click the start menu it shows up as a newly installed program, despite the fact that I've used it quite a bit. I want it to go away and show up as an old program, not highlighted like a new one. The only help I can find using my formidable Google-Fu is "Turn off new program notification". Well, I don't want to do that; I like to know if something new has been added to my machine. Anyone know how XP marks programs as newly installed, or highlighted, and how to turn this off on an individual entry basis rather than across the board?
