Next year, I'll be travelling to the Netherlands and (briefly) Belgium, then later a trip to Tallinn, Helsinki and Stockholm. Are there any films or novels I should check out to get a feel for the places before I get there?

Where should I stay in Amsterdam and what should I check out?
I'm going to Amsterdam for two days and two nights the first week of January. I am a 26 year old single lesbian who is very interested in checking out the local hotspots for gay women and also visiting some art galleries. I would like to see some unusual art installations and/or performance art while I am there. Thank you! : )

Finding size 14 / 48.5 shoes in Europe filter: I'm in Paris and soon to be in Amsterdam. I need some shoes for traveling and normally I buy online to avoid exactly this problem of finding my size. Barring some miracle of someone knowing a place in one of these cities where I can for sure get something, what would be the European equivalent of Zappos.com where I could arrange pick-up as a shipping option?

I'm spending next weekend in Amsterdam. I'll be doing the usual touristy things, but I'd like to add a twist to it. I speak Indonesian very well but have never been to Indonesia... I would like to experience Amsterdam's Indo/Indonesian side. Any particular areas, restaurants, activities to check out?

What is it like to live in Amsterdam? I will be doing a recce soon, but would really appreciate opinions on the following questions:
Is it a fun place to go out in the evening? Are the clubs good? Is there a good gig scene (punk-rock/indie/folk)? Is the city fast- or slow-paced? Is it safe for a woman to walk alone at night? Is the public transport good? Does it run all night?
Which are the interesting areas to live in? Is it a beautiful city? What is the cost of living? For example, for: an apartment, a gig ticket, a beer, a pint of milk, a sandwich at a take-away place. Is there a radical political scene?

Internet pal in Amsterdam says he likes American treats, and I was planning on sending him some as a surprise. Any suggestions on what I can get here that he won't be able to find there? I don't want to send a box of hostess cupcakes (for example) and then find out that they're extremely common over there.

Myself, my partner and a two of our friends have booked flights to Amsterdam for a week's break away and we need to find somewhere to stay. Ideally, we were thinking about an apartment so we can actually
live there for a week rather than just stay; hotels and hostels are all well and good but it would be great to be able to cook and have a space to relax.

Husband & I are going to both Dublin & Amsterdam in September. We're seeking accommodations (either Hotel or Bed & Breakfast) that would allow us to live like
locals enjoying a weekend* (see inside) . Ideally, the hotel would be far enough to avoid traffic/congestion/tourists but close enough to be able to take public transportation to attractions.

I've just been watching the
fascinating BBC documentary on stag weekends and prostitution. Whilst quite comprehensive with its conclusions, It got me wondering about how legal prostitution in the UK would be perceived. My question, then, is: what is the public opinion of prostitution in Amsterdam (and other such places). I remember during my time in Amsterdam asking the owner of a flower shop where the red light district was and receiving the most disgusted look I've ever had in my life. I sort of suspect that many people may share this sentiment, but please add your thoughts and experiences! Thanks.
