Female Sad Americana Music - Recommendations?

I've been curating some playlists and realised that some of my favourite genres are really dude heavy. I love most inheritors of Springsteen, as well as his music. My absolute ideal would capture anything from Brian Fallon (The gaslight anthem, the horrible crows, or his solo work) Please recommend me some female or non-male artists that I might enjoy! I must hear him again, unless I imagined him

There's a voice stuck in my head. It's a male singer, blues and folk, about the same timbre as Leonard Cohen but smoother, with a mournful sound and very slight rasp on the higher notes. Who is he? [more inside]

Who is on the cover of Will the Circle Be Unbroken?

For some reason this is really hard to google. Who is on the cover of Will the Circle Be Unbroken, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band et al.? (The first one, not either of the sequel records.) Is it Stonewall Jackson? Somebody else? A generic Civil War type dude? If so, what is that uniform? Please rest assured that I already feel bad for not automatically knowing this.

When did GE stop making this crappy dishwasher?

Recommendations for swampy fringe folk/americana music?

Looking for music recommendations (particularly instrumental recordings) that capture the mythically haunted swampy vibe of the American gulf coast. Older/obscure/authentic tracks are welcome, but I'm also interested in contemporary americana tunes that capture the spirit of the Louisiana swamps. [more inside]

Searching for signs... literally.

Every time I'm in Austin, I enjoy driving around and looking at the unique signage of various local businesses, signs which are often works of art in steel, paint and neon or bulbs. Las Vegas, of course, has the most epic signage (and even a graveyard for signs of deceased businesses), and I've been impressed with many of the googie-styled artifacts while visiting LA. On the contrary, every time I'm in my hometown, I'm saddened by the way the custom steel signs of the past have given way to illuminated plastic rectangles. What other cities have large numbers of amazing, steel-fashioned, illuminated signs?

with my double barrel shotgun and a whole box of shells we'll celebrate the fourth of july

Please suggest songs (mostly but not exclusively blues and americana) for a soundtrack to a story about two very bad people on a cross-country Bonnie & Clyde-style crime spree. Ideally the lyrics would be at least a little bit relevant, but that's less important than the tone. The best example I have so far is Holly Golightly's Devil Do. [more inside]

America on film

I teach ESL to new refugees and they have expressed a desire to see movies that tell them about or show America. They want to know about the different landscapes, accents, lifestyles, etc. I'm looking for suggestions for simple, visually descriptive films that feature a wide variety of geographical locations and Americans. Can you think of any? [more inside]

Three kids, two weeks, one car: Toronto to San Francisco vacation, or "if you like it so much then quit your job!"

Late-March roadtrip from Toronto to San Francisco, or wherever we end up by the time we have to head back. We've got two weeks, or sixteen days if we really need it. There's three of us. We currently have no plan and only vague notions of freedom on the road and driving into podunk towns to see giant balls of twine. As such, we have tons of logistics questions, which I will attempt to summarize: [more inside]

Find this Emerson quote for me!

I should be able to find this, but google isn't treating me well. There is this quote which I thought was by Emerson, but now I'm not sure... It goes something like "I will say one thing today and say the opposite thing tomorrow and defend it strongly." (Obviously I'm no quote expert, but that's the gist of it). Any help appreciated.
