Rules of Marriage and a J-2 Visa to the US

My long-term boyfriend is moving to the US for his PhD-degree in September 2015 and plans on getting a J-1 visa. I would like to join him on a J-2, but we are not married yet. Is it possible for him to apply for a visa this winter, then we get married in the spring/early summer, and then I can apply for a J-2 visa at that time? [more inside]

"Same background dating" for a potential immigrant in the United States

I'm currently a non immigrant in the United States and looking to settle down here because I want to be away from the society I was raised in. However, I'm looking for a person that shares the better parts of my cultural beliefs and value sets so I can preserve some of them when raising children here, and keep in touch with my roots. Are there any good dating resources that mefi can help me with, or general ideas on what I can do to seek such partners? [more inside]

Lawyer in which country?

For an Australian citizen thinking of moving to the United States, is it better to see an immigration lawyer in Australia, or one in the US, for consultation? This assumes that one is currently in Australia, but travels occasionally to the US. [more inside]

Questions about an American couple moving to Canada.

American here, with spouse. Thinking of moving to Canada within 5 years, but retaining US citizenship (both of us). One of us has quite marketable skills, the other is on disability. Will one of us being on disability hurt our chances?? Where do we start looking to learn about this process? How long does it usually take? What can we do to increase our chances of making this change? Anonymous so that work and a few other people don't find out before we let them know.

Movin to Amrika

I’m British, my wife’s American. We’re planning on moving to the States next year. Aside from the bureaucracy and deciding exactly where we’re going I’ve been thinking about my employability and wondering if there’s anything I could or should be doing over the next twelve months to make myself more attractive to American employers. banking:filter:What, if anything, should I do about BofA closing/cancelling my credit cards ....because I paid them off?

I had two Bank of America credit cards. Both were of the high interest types (21% and 25% interest). I owed in the area of 5 thousand dollars total and I knew that it was time to bite the bullet and take the money out of my savings to pay them off. I may have been late in payments a few times (not often) and usually I only paid the minimum payment due. I naively thought paying them off completely would be viewed as a positive thing. I paid them both off just days ago. [more inside]

Socialised health care really is better.

I've been recruited by a large firm in the US, who are going to relocate me to their offices in Washington. How do I deal with your weird health-care system? [more inside]
