Using American electronics in Japan

Hi, I am moving to Japan soon and I can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether or not my various electronics will work in Japan. I was hoping to move my tv, speakers, consoles, and AVR but most of them are rated at 110-120V and Tokyo is rated at 100V. I have read articles saying it is fine and other saying the opposite. Can anyone point me to some credible source to help answer this question? Are there other things I need to look into besides voltage? My understanding of electricity is abysmal.

What is this website about lesser-known cities?

I remember recently reading a website that highlighted smaller/lesser-known American cities and talked about why they were great places to live, as an alternative to trendy cities like Austin, Asheville, etc. The article I remember reading was about a town in Texas that had beautiful architecture, complete with lots of photos. I thought it was called something like "you should live here" or "you should move here", but those aren't turning up any Google hits. Does anyone know what this might have been?

Looking for cultures out of place in America

So I'm trying to find examples of cultures/peoples/ethnicities/religions that are significantly dissimilar to the main city/culture/groups that surround them. Like finding a group of Amish people in Detroit. Or the one someone gave me of the significant Hasidic population in the scantily clad nightlife world of South Beach. What other current examples are there in the USA and Canada of unexpected groups in unexpected places?

Midwest US to UK beer arbitrage

My wife wants to bring an American craft beer to a former colleague who is primarily a real ale drinker in the UK. He is pretty game to try anything (and is more of a hophead than I am) and we would like to get him something he can't get there and that is a bit different (so no American Belgians for instance) but also worth the hassle. What should we get? We are in Chicago and probably have to get it from Binnys.

Need help sourcing a quote

I could have sworn I read Ta-Nehisi Coates write somewhere on the internet something along the lines of - "The North didn't win the Civil War, America did." The thinking behind this was that the war shouldn't be framed as "North vs. South" - but rather, "America vs. the CSA" or "America vs. some traitors." Does this ring any bells? [more inside]

American Shibboleth

With the global saturation of American culture I've gotten to wondering about a question relating to American identity that is surprisingly difficult to answer well, are there any Shibboleths that Americans today could use that would reasonably identify other Americans while also excluding non-Americans? During WWII GI's would quiz suspicious soldiers claiming to be American on baseball knowledge, as the sport gets more popular elsewhere and less popular in the US, is there anything left that Americans today could use? What would be culturally ubiquitous enough to reach everyone in the US without also reaching the world? [more inside]

Do IT Jobs REALLY Have to be This Way? Is It Me?

Hello all. I'm a software developer, and I seem to be a magnet for batsh*t when it comes to jobs. During interviews, I've been outright lied to. Metaphors for the idea of America

For a song I'm writing, I'm looking for images that represent the positive ideal of America, however naive. Bubblegum, the beach boys, Jimmy Stewart, you get the idea. The song is titled 'Miss America' and I'm looking for images that represent the America I miss in present times. This is far from a rah-rah composition -- they really don't have to be unambiguous -- in fact the ambiguity is something I want to drill into in the song. But I'm looking for people, places, things, ideas that have at one time represented an ideal of 'America', in the abstract, that I can play with as images in a song. No wrong answers. Thanks.

I'm looking for a quote from a founding father about leaving government

I remember reading something, somewhere from one of the founding fathers about the original intent of legislators to NOT be a political class. Is there anything from any of the FF's on this that rings a bell? Do you have a quote or two?
